Background

Madara was one of Konoha's founders alongside Senju Hashirama. He later left the village, attacked it, and fought Hashirama at the Valley of the End; Konoha consequently regarded him as a missing-nin. 165

He believed the Uchiha had betrayed him by remaining in Konoha when he departed. Madara viewed the clan as politically marginalized, domesticated by the village, and ultimately destined for destruction; in his view, he alone represented the Uchiha's true orthodoxy. 171

While secluded at the Mountains Graveyard, Madara relied on White Zetsu intelligence and life-support measures. He identified promising Uchiha—including Obito and Tekka—as potential tools for his plans. 133 159 171

Appearance

Madara's appearance changes substantially between his aged living state, reanimated body, and Ten-Tails Jinchūriki transformation.

  • His living body is elderly and physically diminished, limiting his endurance despite his combat skill. 187
  • He has long hair and can manifest white armored Susanoo forms. 187 223
  • As the Ten-Tails Jinchūriki, he develops horns and a body capable of regenerating massive injuries. 270 271
  • After Otsutsuki Genshiki extracts the Tailed Beasts' power, he reverts to his original weakened form. 272

Personality

Madara is calm, calculating, and highly prideful. He gathers intelligence before acting, manipulates allies through their fears and ambitions, and regards most people as expendable pieces in a larger plan. 171 225

He respects exceptional strength, especially Shita Genichi's. Although he initially underestimates Genichi, Madara adapts quickly in battle, analyzes unfamiliar techniques, and openly declares Genichi the strongest after witnessing his physical power. 152 223

Madara sees conflict as inevitable and considers the Infinite Tsukuyomi the only permanent means of ending war and death. 266

Abilities & Skills

Sharingan and Mangekyō Sharingan

Madara possesses exceptional mastery of the Sharingan and Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan.

  • Uses powerful genjutsu, including Demonic Illusion: Shackling Stakes Technique. 213
  • Can control Karatachi Yagura through his dōjutsu; he reinforces the control by shifting to the Rinnegan. 248 249
  • Manifests Susanoo from armored forms to the Perfect Form. 152 187 249
  • His Perfect Form Susanoo is regarded as stronger than those wielded by Itachi, Shisui, and Tekka. 267
  • His aged body initially restricts his ability to sustain his full power. 187

Fire Release

Madara's Fire Release remains highly destructive even in his aged state.

  • Fire Release: Great Fire Annihilation creates a sweeping sea of flames. 187 223
  • His flames were extinguished by Shita Genichi's extreme Ice Release during their second major battle. 187

Wood Release

Madara uses Hashirama-derived Wood Release in both direct combat and clone warfare.

  • Deep Forest Emergence creates massive advancing vegetation. 186
  • Can create Wood Dragons for defense and restraint. 223
  • Produces Wood Clones capable of manifesting Susanoo and threatening entire Kage-level teams. 223 265 267
  • Even a single Wood Clone requires multiple Kage-level shinobi to defeat. 267

Rinnegan

Madara's Rinnegan grants him superior control over the Six Paths techniques.

  • Uses Shinra Tensei and Banshō Ten'in with power surpassing Nagato's applications. 221 223
  • Creates multiple Chibaku Tensei cores simultaneously, including nine meteor-like constructs used to cover his retreat. 221 223
  • Can manifest Limbo: Border Jail shadows that ordinary shinobi cannot see or sense. 222
  • Uses Limbo shadows as substitutes to absorb attacks or exchange positions with his main body. 223
  • His early reanimated vessel cannot draw out the Rinnegan's full power. 221

Impure World Reincarnation and the Demonic Statue

Madara turns reanimation and the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path into tools for his Tailed Beast campaign.

  • Orochimaru initially resurrects and controls him through Impure World Reincarnation, but Madara breaks free. 212 213
  • Later uses Impure World Reincarnation to deploy reanimated shinobi and Jinchūriki against the major villages. 256
  • Connects himself to the Demonic Statue through tubes extending from its head. 221
  • Uses the statue and a transplanted Rinnegan to support the collection of Tailed Beasts. 267

Ten-Tails Jinchūriki Powers

After absorbing the Demonic Statue, Madara gains Six Paths-level abilities.

  • Forms and attacks with Truth-Seeking Orbs. 271
  • Uses Sage Art: Yin Release Lightning Dispatch over a wide area. 271
  • Controls God Tree vines capable of overwhelming Naruto and other shinobi. 270
  • Regenerates from the loss of half his body, though this does not prevent him from being overwhelmed by Shita Genichi. 271
  • Cannot fully draw out the Ten-Tails' potential because it is not originally his own power. 271

Relationships

  • Senju Hashirama — Former co-founder of Konoha and lifelong rival. Madara anticipates fighting Hashirama again after learning of his resurrection. 165 244
  • Shita Genichi — Primary rival and greatest obstacle to the Eye of the Moon Plan. Madara acknowledges Genichi as the strongest after their Rinnegan battle. 152 223
  • Uchiha Obito — Targeted as a potential pawn; Madara's involvement is indicated by Obito's White Zetsu cells and curse seal. 165
  • Uchiha Tekka — Manipulated into awakening the Mangekyō Sharingan and embracing Madara's vision of rebuilding a powerful Uchiha clan. 171
  • Nagato — Rinnegan wielder tied to Madara's resurrection plans and Tailed Beast strategy. 175 222
  • White Zetsu and Black Zetsu — Intelligence gatherers and operatives who support Madara's schemes, though Black Zetsu later urges Madara to retreat from Shita Genichi. 171 271
  • Orochimaru — Resurrects Madara in an attempt to study and control him; Madara escapes Orochimaru's control. 212 213
  • Otsutsuki Genshiki — Offers Madara assistance and returns his missing Rinnegan, then betrays him by extracting the Tailed Beasts' power. 265 272

Story Role / Major Arcs

Reemergence and Akatsuki Manipulation

Madara's renewed activity coincides with the destruction of Yahiko's Akatsuki and Nagato's descent into darkness. Shita Genichi recognizes that Madara may be emerging from seclusion and interfering with events in the Land of Rain. 150

Madara clashes with Genichi through a White Zetsu substitute and Susanoo, treating the encounter as a measure of Genichi's growing strength. 152

Uchiha Tekka's Manipulation

Madara rescues Tekka, implants him with White Zetsu cells, and arranges for him to witness apparent Konoha Anbu harvesting the Sharingan of fallen Uchiha. The event drives Tekka to awaken the Mangekyō Sharingan. 171

He then convinces Tekka that Konoha's Uchiha are doomed, steering him toward Madara's ideal of an eternal and powerful Uchiha clan. 171

Battles with Shita Genichi

Madara confronts Genichi again with the Demonic Statue, Wood Release, Fire Release, and Susanoo. Genichi's Ice Giant destroys Madara's Susanoo forms and defeats his aged body. 186 187

After Orochimaru's reanimation grants him the Rinnegan, Madara fights Genichi using Limbo, Chibaku Tensei, Wood Clones, and the Six Paths techniques. He retreats after Genichi counters his offensive and analyzes his abilities. 221 223

Tailed Beast Campaign

Madara mobilizes to collect Jinchūriki and Tailed Beasts, attacking Kirigakure and placing the Fourth Mizukage under Sharingan control. 247 248

Ten-Tails Transformation and Death
