Background / History

Xuan Yi took interest in Ye Yan after recognizing his potential and the possible connection between the Ye Family and the Azure Ice Flame. She offered him protection, provided the Thousand Illusion Bead, and began guiding him toward becoming her disciple 18 19.

At the Pill Tower, she personally instructed Ye Yan in alchemy. Rather than merely explaining theory, she demonstrated pill refinement with her pale-blue flame, corrected his control of temperature and medicinal extraction, and slowed her own process so he could follow each step 20.

She subsequently subjected Ye Yan to an intense training regimen for the Blazing Flame Force. The training included repeated strikes with a rod, medicinal recovery baths, meridian-strengthening exercises, and access to cultivation resources; Ye Yan’s progress earned her approval, though she refused to lower the difficulty 28 30.

After a year of guidance, Xuan Yi formally accepted Ye Yan as her first disciple. Ye Yan performed a full three-kowtow ceremony, while Xuan Yi acknowledged him as “my disciple” and accepted his decision to leave Sacred Pill City to continue growing through travel 35.

Xuan Yi became increasingly protective of Ye Yan as threats from the Black Fire Sect and Soul Hall emerged. She criticized Xuan Kongzi for allowing Black Nether to become an uncontrolled danger to her disciple and worried about Ye Yan travelling outside Sacred Pill City 30 33 173.

After Ye Yan spent years away from Sacred Pill City without writing, she complained privately about her “rebellious disciple,” while recalling his tea-offering ceremony with evident fondness. Ye Yan was her first disciple, and she had placed substantial affection in him 135.

When Ye Yan returned, Xuan Yi learned of Yao Chen’s survival and of the forces surrounding the Eight Ancient Clans. She supported the effort to gather materials for Yao Chen’s reconstruction, accompanied Ye Yan toward the Northwest Region, and remained determined to protect him despite his attempts to reassure her that the journey was safe 162 164 183 196.

During the search for the Life Flame in the Shennong Mountain Range, Xuan Yi accompanied Ye Yan and used a token supplied by the Pill Tower Ancestor when they encountered Elder Shennong. Their encounter emphasized the disparity between Battle Sovereigns and Battle Saints, but Elder Shennong ultimately allowed them to depart 175 177.

During the struggle over the Fallen Heart Flame, Xuan Yi endured its illusion-based assault before capturing it through spatial power and Dou Qi. The flame remained conscious after absorption and violently resisted within her body, leaving her in severe pain while she used Ice Spirit Cold Spring to preserve consciousness 236 237 241.

With Ye Yan’s assistance, Xuan Yi erased the Fallen Heart Flame’s spiritual intelligence and resumed refining it according to her cultivation technique 242. However, a Soul Hall-prepared Azure Nether Mind-Disturbing Pill and the flame’s evil fire later destabilized her emotions and caused her to lose control. The ensuing incident fundamentally complicated her relationship with Ye Yan, although she recovered, gained greatly improved aptitude, and completed the accumulation needed for her ninth transformation 245 246 249.

Xuan Yi subsequently concealed herself at the Pill Tower to avoid attracting Soul Hall suspicion. When Blood River Heavenly Venerable targeted Ye Yan at Jia Nan Academy, she openly refused to surrender her disciple, removed the battle from the academy with spatial techniques, and fought alongside Ye Yan in killing Blood River and the invading Soul Hall experts 284 288 290.

Appearance

Xuan Yi is portrayed as an elegant woman whose appearance contrasts sharply with her severe training style.

  • Usually dressed in black 20
  • Delicate features described as “like a painting” 30
  • Her composed image is often paired with a rod used in Ye Yan’s cultivation training 30
  • Wields a pale-blue flame during alchemy demonstrations 20
  • Retains an elegant, refined bearing and a youthful appearance despite having lived for more than a century 183 196

Personality

Xuan Yi is direct and exacting as a teacher. She identifies flaws in Ye Yan’s alchemy without reservation, expects him to endure difficult cultivation, and prioritizes a stable foundation over reckless advancement 20 30.

Beneath that severity, she is deeply invested in her disciple’s safety and development. She defended Ye Yan from Tian Leizi’s probing, worried over the threat posed by Black Nether, and later treated Ye Yan with affection closer to that of an equal than a distant student 33 173 186.

She is also perceptive and politically aware. Xuan Yi immediately noticed the danger in the Black Fire Sect leader’s escape and understood that uncontrolled pressure on Ye Yan could turn into a genuine life-threatening crisis 30.

Xuan Yi is fiercely protective of Ye Yan’s autonomy. When Xuan Kongzi and Tian Leizi asked about the soul cultivation method behind his Spirit Realm soul, she intervened immediately and insisted that any decision concerning his fortuitous opportunity belonged to Ye Yan alone 163.

She is capable of accepting difficult truths when Ye Yan entrusts her with them. After learning of his unusual bloodline and annual blessings, she ordered him not to reveal the matter to others and accepted the burden of safeguarding his secret 175.
