Background / History

Orochimaru was Ryuchi Cave's mortal representative and a contractor on its Summoning Contract. His earlier attempt to obtain the cave's sage power nearly killed him, leading him to develop Cursed Seals from Ryuchi Cave's sage arts instead. By this time, he was also an S-rank missing-nin from Konoha and had used Living Corpse Reincarnation to place his male soul in a female body, leaving his soul damaged and poorly aligned with its vessel. 331 332

When the White Snake Sage reverse-summoned him to Ryuchi Cave, Orochimaru encountered Bane, the “Spirit Venerable.” He immediately recognized Bane as an existence too powerful to challenge directly, treated him with formal deference, and accepted an exchange: Orochimaru would teach ninjutsu in return for Bane's assistance with matters beyond ordinary shinobi methods. 332 333

Orochimaru initially pursued Sasuke Uchiha as a potential vessel and coveted the Sharingan, but his exposure to Bane's power changed his priorities.
