Background

Nami grew up in Cocoyasi Village under Arlong's occupation. Arlong recognized her navigation and cartography talent, forced her to serve as the only human “partner” of the Arlong Pirates, and promised freedom for her and her village if she paid him 100 million Belly. She endured this arrangement to protect the village while secretly hating the pirates responsible for murdering her foster mother. 17

She recognized Bane as the renowned bounty hunter who had killed Whitebeard commander Satch. Having once imagined that he might rescue her, Nami immediately accepted when he invited her to join his crew. After Arlong's defeat, Bane handed her a sword and offered her the chance to personally take revenge. 18 19

Nami chose to leave Cocoyasi with Bane and Zoro to pursue her dream of drawing the world's most accurate and comprehensive map. She took responsibility for navigating their captured ship and used her ability to command Momoo, Arlong's sea beast, to tow it when the crew lacked enough sailors. 20
