Background

Zoro trained at the Isshin Dojo in Shimotsuki Village under Koushiro. After Kuina's death, he had outgrown the other disciples and considered leaving to seek stronger opponents at sea. Bane's arrival ended that isolation: although Zoro remained superior in pure swordsmanship, Bane introduced him to Haki and the Six Styles, giving him a rival who could challenge him in other ways. 12 13 14

He became Bane's junior disciple and departed Shimotsuki Village with him. Koushiro specifically instructed Zoro to remain close to Bane because of his poor sense of direction. 15

Zoro's overriding ambition is to become the World's Greatest Swordsman. He accepted Bane's shifting plans—piracy, Marine service, and interworld travel—because none conflicted with that goal. 16 29 324

Zoro seeks strong opponents with little regard for danger. He immediately challenged Mihawk despite recognizing him as the World's Greatest Swordsman, then declared that he would eventually surpass him. 33

He is blunt, competitive, and easily provoked by Bane's teasing, especially over who is the senior disciple. Beneath that rivalry, he trusts Bane completely and consistently follows him into unfamiliar worlds and conflicts. 13 68 324

Defeat does not diminish his resolve. After losing to Enel, he calmly admitted that he could not win; when speaking with Wyper, he explained that strength also requires acknowledging failure and continuing onward. 59 63
