Personality
Hisoka views promising people as “toys” or unripe “fruit,” taking pleasure in testing, tormenting, and sometimes sparing them until they become more interesting opponents. He openly enjoys combat, suffering, and life-or-death stakes. 111 112 125 133
Despite his erratic manner, he is observant and tactically adaptable. During his battle with Liber, he rapidly analyzes unfamiliar abilities, adjusts Bungee Gum’s properties to create openings, and uses a decoy to set up a close-range attack. 129 130
Abilities & Skills
Nen
Hisoka is a skilled Nen user who reinforces his body, controls attacks at range, and conceals or modifies the use of his aura. His hostility is intense enough to be felt as a palpable killing intent by nearby examinees. 110 126 129
- Uses aura to strengthen his physical combat ability. 129
- Manipulates cards after throwing them, making them return to his hand or alter their trajectory. 129 140
- Can use Zetsu to suppress his presence and focus on aura recovery. 133 134
Bungee Gum
Bungee Gum alters Hisoka’s aura to possess the stickiness and stretchiness of chewing gum alongside the elasticity and restorative qualities of rubber. He uses it to control cards, bind opponents, redirect his movement, and withstand damage. 129 130
- Attaches elastic aura to targets and can increase its recoil by stretching it farther. 129
- Recalls or redirects card attacks through attached aura. 129 140
- Used the technique to pull himself away from Liber’s spatial trap. 130
- Combined with Texture Surprise to seal wounds and reduce blood loss after Liber severely injured him. 132
Texture Surprise
Texture Surprise produces a skin-like, paper-thin Nen substance that can imitate textures, colors, words, and drawings. 130
- Can be used to alter written information or imagery. 130
- Combined with Bungee Gum to create a hollow, lifelike decoy that tricked Liber into striking it. 130
- Functioned as improvised wound covering when combined with Bungee Gum after Hisoka’s injuries. 132
Card Combat and Physical Skill
Hisoka uses ordinary playing cards as lethal weapons, combining them with Nen control and exceptional agility. 111 129
- Killed an examinee by embedding a card into the back of his head. 111
- Easily evaded a four-blade assault, caught two returning blades, and turned the attacker’s own weapons against him. 125
- Overpowered Kurapika and Leorio in close combat, despite their coordinated attacks. 111
- Repositioned and attacked with cards quickly enough to repeatedly pressure Kurapika in the final test. 140 141
Emergency Recovery
After being badly injured by Liber, Hisoka used Illumi’s Nen needles to forcefully expend his own aura, then sealed his wounds with Bungee Gum and Texture Surprise. 132
- The method stopped his bleeding and held damaged muscles together. 132
- It was ineffective for broken bones; Hisoka survived because his bones had not been injured. 132
- Illumi warned that repeatedly overdrawing his aura would hasten his death if he did not restrain himself. 132 133
Equipment
- Playing cards — His primary weapons and a constant personal accessory. 104 111
- Number 44 tag — His Hunter Exam target badge; Liber stole it after defeating him on Zevil Island. 128 130
- Communicator — Used to receive a call ordering him toward the second test location. 112
Background / History
Hisoka entered the Hunter Exam as Number 44, immediately standing apart from the other candidates through his appearance, cards, and feared reputation. Liber recognized him at the underground test site and deliberately kept his aura naturally diffused to avoid attracting Hisoka’s interest. 104 105
During the Numere Wetlands stage, Hisoka’s killing intent drew Liber and Killua’s attention. He became interested in Liber after noticing his spotless shoes in the mud, interpreting them as evidence of hidden ability. 110 After falling behind the main group, Kurapika and Leorio found Hisoka surrounded by corpses; he killed another examinee with a card, defeated both of them, and choked Gon until Kurapika intervened. 111 112
Hisoka was intrigued by Kurapika’s Scarlet Eyes and revealed that he knew of the Kurta Clan’s extermination, though he refused to explain how. He left only after receiving a call from a companion, promising that Gon, Kurapika, and Liber would be worth watching in the future. 112
Within Trick Tower, Hisoka encountered a scarred former examiner who had entered as a test blocker to avenge his previous humiliation. Hisoka effortlessly evaded the man’s four-blade technique, killed him with his own weapons, and continued onward. 125 He completed the tower first in six hours and seventeen minutes, then confronted Liber’s group until Gittarackur’s arrival ended their Nen standoff. 126
On Zevil Island, Hisoka silently invited Liber to follow him into the forest. Their battle revealed Hisoka’s Bungee Gum, card control, and ability to improvise under pressure, but Liber ultimately overwhelmed him with spatial manipulation and a massive wind vortex. Gittarackur extracted the severely injured Hisoka, while Liber took Hisoka’s Number 44 tag. 128 129 130
Illumi—revealed to be Gittarackur—helped Hisoka stabilize his injuries. Hisoka later hid in Zetsu while buried in the forest, then returned with Illumi at the end of the fourth exam phase. 132 134 135 By the final test, he had recovered sufficiently to fight Kurapika, whom he repeatedly provoked before whispering information about the Phantom Troupe and forfeiting the match. He later defeated Bodoro through intimidation. 136 140 141
After the examination, Hisoka privately approached Liber to question him about the strange ability used during the final test and invited him to watch a future performance in Yorknew City. 143
Relationships
- Liber — Rival and desired future prey. Hisoka took an immediate interest in Liber’s hidden abilities, fought him on Zevil Island, and was defeated and stripped of his Number 44 tag; he later sought details about Liber’s spatial ability. 110 129 130 143
- Illumi / Gittarackur — Associate who rescued and treated Hisoka after his battle with Liber. Hisoka paid Illumi for two interventions, while Illumi remained strictly transactional. 130 132 133
- Gon — An “unripe fruit” whom Hisoka chose not to kill because he expected Gon to become more interesting with time. 111 112
- Kurapika — Opponent whose Scarlet Eyes and connection to the Kurta Clan fascinate Hisoka. He provided Kurapika with information about the Phantom Troupe, then forfeited their final-test match. 112 140 141
- Leorio — Examinee Hisoka easily defeated in the Numere Wetlands after Leorio attacked him to protect his companions. 111
- Bodoro — Final-test opponent whom Hisoka defeated after threatening him privately, forcing his surrender. 141
