Background

Zhang Jie was already a Zhongzhou Team veteran when Wang Zhen arrived in Infinite Space. He called Li Xiaoyi/Wang Zhen to the team’s first meeting and initially presented himself as a cautious survivor with few rewards or worthwhile enhancements. In reality, he possessed heavily restricted but formidable psychic power and concealed the nature of his half-human, half-Guide identity. 3 4 20

He promoted Zheng Zha as the team’s strongest member and encouraged him to become its leader, while deliberately withholding that captains must undergo a Leader Trial. Zheng Zha’s early Gene Lock breakthrough placed Zhang Jie in danger: the trial’s final stage required the Guide as a blood sacrifice to empower the prospective captain. 4 20

During the Ju-On scenario, Zhang Jie repeatedly manipulated the team’s internal balance. He defended Wang Zhen’s unexplained abductions with fabricated explanations, pushed Zheng Zha toward a direct confrontation with Wang Zhen, and calculated ways for Wang Zhen to fail the captain’s trial. In the Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor scenario, Zhang Jie and Zheng Zha unsuccessfully attacked the Dragon Emperor, then fled when the Taiyi Five-Smoke Veil blocked their assault. Zhang Jie later used psychic interference to help infiltrate the Dragon Emperor’s palace and conceal the Dragon-Slaying Dagger inside a fish, enabling Zheng Zha’s assassination. 136 137 153

After negotiating with Wang Zhen, Zhang Jie secured information concerning Wang Zhen’s mental instability and arranged for Zheng Zha to become captain of Zhongzhou Team 2. Despite this self-preservation, he does not wholly abandon Zheng Zha. He fled first when the Dragon Emperor proved invulnerable, but warned Zheng Zha to escape and later returned to carry him away.
