Nalan Yanran is the granddaughter of Nalan Jie and daughter of Nalan Su. As the Misty Cloud Sect's Young Sect Master and Yun Yun's disciple, she carries both the sect's standing and the Nalan Family's reputation. 9 62 74

She travelled to the Xiao Clan with Deacon Ge Ye and Mo Li intending to annul her engagement to Xiao Yan, believing she had the right to choose her own future rather than remain bound by an unwanted arrangement. She could hear Xiao Yuan's inner voice upon arriving, but concealed this ability. 9

When the Xiao Clan rejected the proposed annulment terms, she proposed transferring the engagement from Xiao Yan to Xiao Yuan. Her reasoning was practical as well as personal: Xiao Yuan was the Xiao Clan's exceptional young genius, making the new match acceptable for the Misty Cloud Sect's prestige. 11 12
