Yin Release and Yang Release were like the two keys to a door. Possessing both granted an extremely important ability: control over life.

Everyone knew that Yin-Yang Release was immensely powerful, but over the years, very few people had been qualified to touch power on that level.

"Almost all shinobi misunderstand Yin-Yang Release. The lower-level powers of Yin Release and Yang Release are still somewhat understandable, but true Yin-Yang Release—those who can actually use it cannot really explain how it works, either. The Akimichi Clan's Expansion Jutsu and nearly all medical ninjutsu are Yang Release. The Nara Clan's secret shadow techniques, the Yamanaka Clan's secret mind techniques, and the vast majority of genjutsu are Yin Release. Once one mastered either of them, learning the other became unbelievably difficult. Being able to learn Yin Release or Yang Release already required a special constitution formed through at least centuries of selection. What one gained, one inevitably lost: aptitude inclined toward Yin Release was naturally incompatible with Yang Release, and vice versa. Unless external force was used, or an exceptionally powerful shinobi forcibly stripped away and suppressed it through sheer strength, like Madara Uchiha. Otherwise, it was simply impossible to simultaneously master relatively advanced Yin Release and Yang Release. That was also the original purpose behind the Sage of Six Paths separating yin and yang—it could not be broken so easily."

"But why is Yin-Yang Release so difficult? It's still a kind of ninjutsu. There shouldn't be such an enormous divide, should there?"

The five elemental releases also had properties of mutual generation and restraint, but they did not have such an either-or exclusivity.
