History
Marine service and Dawn's mentorship
While serving as a Vice Admiral, Aokiji was selected by Fleet Admiral Sengoku to accompany Yukimura against the Slave Catchers who had retaliated against the Marines. Sengoku also intended the assignment to give Aokiji military merit and strengthen his comparatively weak Dove Faction. Though habitually lethargic, Aokiji accepted the orders and prepared to carry them out cleanly 10.
During the mission, he agreed to search the Boin Archipelago for Dawn, the child who had fallen from Yukimura's ship. Aokiji found Dawn alive on the island, recognized the strength he had gained through survival and training, and took an interest after learning that he had eaten a Devil Fruit 10 15.
After Dawn demonstrated the Aura Fruit's ability to enhance another person's strength, Aokiji judged him to possess exceptional potential and strategic value to the Marines. He nevertheless warned himself that talent and a powerful Devil Fruit did not guarantee that Dawn would reach the summit 16.
Aokiji personally designed Dawn's training during the voyage to Marine Headquarters. He emphasized power control, close-quarters combat, sparring under Aura amplification, and foundational Six Powers techniques. His brawling-oriented instruction reflected his time under Garp and suited Dawn's enhancement-based fighting style 18.
He later led Dawn, Hina, Sola, and other trainees on practical combat assignments toward the East Blue and Loguetown, selecting suitable pirate opponents for them while serving as part of Roger's execution escort force 33. He continued mentoring and protecting Dawn's group through extended deployments, including six months of training in the West Blue 116.
Admiral and break with the Marines
By the time of the Straw Hat Pirates' encounter with him, Aokiji had become one of Marine Headquarters' three Admirals and was regarded as one of the World Government's strongest combatants 282.
Following Sengoku's resignation, Sengoku recommended Aokiji as the next Fleet Admiral. The World Government instead favored Akainu, whose conception of justice Aokiji considered too extreme. Their dispute culminated in a ten-day battle on Punk Hazard that transformed the island into a landscape of ice and lava; Akainu won, and Aokiji left the Marines 327.
Years later, Zephyr approached his former student to recruit him into Dawn's cause and challenge the World Government's distorted interpretation of justice. Aokiji initially doubted that their plan could succeed, but Zephyr's restored health, new equipment, and Tremor-Tremor Fruit power convinced him that Dawn possessed resources beyond what Aokiji had imagined 430 431.
Aokiji agreed to help Zephyr's group against Kaido, then accepted Dawn's explanation of his wider plans after witnessing the force Dawn had assembled. He joined them because Dawn's strength gave him genuine hope that their vision of justice could be realized 432 456 458.
Appearance
Aokiji is a tall man with an intentionally relaxed, sleepy presentation. At his first meeting with Dawn, he wore a green eye mask pushed above his forehead, a white vest, and a dark-blue shirt 15.
- Tall build 15
- Afro hairstyle 22
- Green eye mask, often worn over his eyes while sleeping or resting 10 22
- Frequently yawns, lounges, or keeps his hands in his pockets 10 282
Personality
Aokiji projects indifference, often yawning through conversations, sleeping during meetings, and complaining about the inconvenience of assignments. This manner is genuine, but it does not make him unreliable: he executes Sengoku's orders precisely and is trusted to complete missions without creating unnecessary trouble 10 22.
He is observant and measured in his judgments. He immediately recognized Dawn's potential while remaining conscious of how easily gifted people can be ruined by power, wealth, desire, or misfortune 16. As Dawn's mentor, Aokiji abandoned his usual laziness to tailor a demanding training regimen around Dawn's weaknesses 18.
His justice is deliberately described as “lazy Justice,” but he is not apathetic toward injustice. His refusal to accept Akainu as Fleet Admiral stemmed from his opposition to Akainu's extreme methods, and his eventual cooperation with Dawn and Zephyr reflects his desire for a justice no longer controlled by the World Government 282 327 430 456.
Abilities & Skills
Ice-Ice Fruit
Aokiji commands extreme cold and ice through the Ice-Ice Fruit. He can freeze seawater, construct weapons and barriers, restrain powerful enemies, and transform himself into ice to mitigate or recover from attacks 282 430 431.
- Ice Age — Instantly froze a giant sea beast and a vast stretch of ocean, creating a frozen route that survivors could cross for several days 282 283.
- Tsunami interception — Froze Whitebeard's massive tsunami at the opening of the Summit War, preventing it from immediately destroying Marine Headquarters 302.
- Ice constructs — Forms ice blades, spears, birds, walls, and large ice prisons for offense, defense, and battlefield control 430 431 454.
- Elemental recovery — Reconstituted himself after Zephyr's shockwaves shattered his body into ice fragments 431.
- Ice Time: Absolute Zero — Uses exceptionally low temperatures against major threats; the cold around this technique was potent enough that even Kaido risked severe injury if his skin and blood froze 454 455.
- Restraint limits — Opponents of Kaido's level can break out of his ice repeatedly, requiring Aokiji to reinforce the freezing continuously and coordinate with allies 454 455.
Haki and close-quarters combat
Despite his reliance on ice, Aokiji is a capable physical fighter. His combat style includes rapid movement, direct exchanges, and Haki-supported attacks 18 430.
- Uses Soru to move and exchange blows at high speed 430.
- Favors a close-combat, hard-hitting training style influenced by Garp 18.
- Combined Haki, close-range combat, and ice restraints while fighting Kaido alongside Dawn and Zephyr 454 455.
Battlefield coordination
Aokiji uses large-scale freezing to control terrain, isolate targets, and create openings for allies rather than relying solely on individual duels.
- Coordinated with Dawn and Zephyr to exhaust, immobilize, and ultimately capture Kaido alive 454 455.
- Combined his ice with Trick's snow to create a frozen battlefield, then shattered immobilized enemies with falling hail 499.
- Pursued Whitebeard's retreating forces with Kizaru after the Summit War 321.
Relationships
- Sengoku — Former Fleet Admiral and superior. Sengoku trusted Aokiji with sensitive missions, supported the growth of his faction, and recommended him as Fleet Admiral before the World Government chose Akainu instead 10 327.
- Yukimura — Marine colleague and mission partner. Aokiji agreed to help him search for the missing Dawn and accompanied him against the Slave Catchers 10 15.
- Dawn — Formerly the child Aokiji recovered from the Boin Archipelago; later his trainee, ally, and strategic partner. Aokiji trained Dawn personally and eventually joined Dawn's cause after seeing its strength and purpose 15 18 456 458.
- Zephyr — Former teacher and respected master. Their reunion began with distrust and a test of strength, but Zephyr's demonstration of Dawn's resources helped persuade Aokiji to join the alliance 430 431.
- Akainu — Fellow Admiral and ideological rival. Their disagreement over the Fleet Admiral position and Akainu's extreme justice led to their ten-day duel on Punk Hazard 327.
- Trick — Allied ice-and-snow combatant. The two combined their powers during the Great War to freeze and shatter multiple enemies 499.
- Nico Robin — Aokiji located Robin with the Straw Hat Pirates after Alabasta. He initially stated that he had only come to confirm her whereabouts, then later froze her while confronting the crew 282 284.
Major Arcs
Straw Hat Pirates encounter
Aokiji encountered the Straw Hat Pirates while checking on Nico Robin after the Alabasta incident. He told Robin that he had not come to capture her, assisted stranded civilians, and froze the sea into a passable route to the next island. He later froze Robin during a confrontation, but allowed the Straw Hats to leave after Dawn intervened on Garp's behalf 282 283 284.
Summit War
At Marineford, Aokiji froze Whitebeard's tsunami as the war began and fought among the Marines' highest-ranking forces. He later pursued the retreating Whitebeard Pirates alongside Kizaru after Whitebeard's death 302 320 321.
Kaido operation
After leaving the Marines, Aokiji assisted Dawn and Zephyr in the campaign against Kaido. He repeatedly imprisoned Kaido in ice, adapted his freezing power against Kaido's flames, and used extreme cold to help wear the Emperor down until Dawn transferred the captured Kaido into the Solid Castle space 454 455.
Great War and aftermath
Aokiji fought with Trick and Zephyr during the final conflict against the World Government's forces, creating an ice-and-snow killing field with Trick 499. After the war, he joined Dragon in establishing the Round Table Conference, while Sakazuki remained Fleet Admiral and Zephyr retired 506.
