Background & History

At fourteen, Irelia severed Noxian Grand General Jericho Swain's arm during the Battle of Placidium. The victory became a turning point in Ionia's war against Noxus, and Irelia subsequently rose to lead the Placidium resistance and, eventually, the wider Ionian resistance effort. 1

As leader, she personally receives Chen Ce after the Seventh Squad is annihilated, believes his account without questioning his survival, and promises to avenge the fallen squad. Suspecting a traitor within the Resistance Army, she brings Chen Ce into confidential discussions with Karma and publicly forbids further slander against him. 2 3

Irelia forms the Resistance Special Operations Team with herself as captain and Chen Ce as its sole member. Their mission to Dragonspine Canyon is intended to intercept a suspicious Noxian force without risking leaks through the suspected traitor. 5 6 The operation becomes a Noxian chemical-weapons test: Irelia duels Riven, confronts commander Emystan, and is caught in the resulting blast after Chen Ce shields her. 7 8

After Chen Ce is critically poisoned, Irelia carries him back to Karma at extreme speed and personally tends to his toxin-cleansing treatment. Following his recovery, she asks him to remain by her side and expresses her wish to share a future with him. 9 10

During the later campaign, Irelia leads the Resistance Army's westward advance and coordinates with Chen Ce's newly recruited allies. She remains focused on military objectives despite personal tension caused by Ahri and Syndra's closeness to Chen Ce. 81 82 92

When Sion assaults Placidium, Irelia and Karma confront him directly. Personality

Irelia is compassionate toward the soldiers under her command. She worries about their injuries, apologizes for poor rations she cannot yet improve, and openly commits herself to giving them a better life after the war. 2 6 Her concern extends beyond ordinary command responsibility: she personally protects Chen Ce's reputation, nurses him during his recovery, and repeatedly urges him not to throw away his life for her. 3 9 43

As a commander, she is decisive but pragmatic. Although she distrusts Glick and knows of his harmful conduct, she delays confronting him because removing him too early could destabilize the Third Legion and cost the resistance the Brotherhood's support. 3 12 She can separate personal feelings from official duties, treating Syndra civilly as an important Resistance ally despite her jealousy. 92

Away from the battlefield, Irelia is more playful, shy, and visibly inexperienced with romance.
