Organization and Duties

British Aurors belong to the Department of Magical Law Enforcement but retain a degree of institutional independence. Their reforms divide their functions into four departments, with separate requirements for combat specialists and ordinary security personnel 557 1234.

Documented Branches and Units

Branch / Unit Responsibilities
Special Operations Squad The branch with the highest combat requirements. Applicants must pass the Aurors’ internal combat training 557.
Auror Guard Elite Special Operations personnel with additional bodyguard training. They escort senior Ministry officials, command teams during ordinary operations, maintain discipline, and ensure orders are carried out 375.
Security Department The Aurors’ intelligence agency, responsible for identifying threats to the Ministry and wizarding world. It employs experienced covert operatives and builds networks by purchasing informants’ cooperation 375.
Patrol Aurors Maintain routine public security. Scrimgeour establishes a dedicated patrol team during the renewed conflict with the Death Eaters 675 707.
Armed Aurors A disciplined combat force developed from Albert’s successful World Cup team. They fight on the front line against Death Eaters and later also participate in street patrols 675 707 1200.

Relationship with Other Forces

  • Hit Wizards — Originally a directly controlled Department of Magical Law Enforcement force, closer to police or soldiers than the older, secret-agent-style Aurors. Reformed Aurors absorb their elite personnel and much of their work; a small remnant continues internal Ministry duties and patrols 1234.
  • Umbrella Corporation — Its armed forces are authorized to assist Aurors after the Hogsmeade Devil attack creates a personnel shortage. Reporters question whether private personnel have undergone assessments equivalent to those required of Aurors 830.
  • Red Umbrella Department — Umbrella’s armed organization is initially modeled on the Armed Aurors, but later adopts different clothing and operational practices 1433.

Practical Instruction

  • Core subjects: Foreign languages, psychology, combat, stealth, and disguise are included in Auror training 331.
  • Simulated environments: Albert and Penelope introduce Auror exercises into the Harris Family Tower’s Training Room, which can reproduce deserts, snowy mountains, deep seas, and other environments 331.
  • Review and sparring: Allen uses the Foe-Glass to record trainees’ images for self-review and as sparring opponents 331.
  • Strict preparation: Albert refuses to relax Penelope’s training because of her friendship with Allen, emphasizing that careless practice can become fatal in actual combat 331.
  • Veteran instruction: Owen invites retired Auror Alastor Moody to train recruits during the summer; Moody takes Penelope and the others for intensive training 332.

Abilities and Skills

Coordinated Combat

Auror discipline allows individually ordinary combatants to become a much stronger collective force 1200.

  • Albert’s young Aurors conduct practiced group maneuvers, while veteran Aurors accustomed to solo work or small teams struggle during the World Cup riot 357.
  • Concealed Aurors use Disillusionment Charms to catch and subdue scattered opponents 357.
  • Super Shield Charm barriers protect the young Aurors during exchanges of heavy spellfire 359.
  • Armed Aurors coordinate spells with Hell Hounds, forcing enemies to divide their attention between magical attacks and approaching creatures 1240.

Rapid Response and Civilian Protection

  • Communication badges allow endangered wizards to alert the Ministry; Aurors then Apparate to the incident within a short time 701.
  • Increased patrols, surveillance, and badge distribution improve pursuit efforts and prevent multiple Death Eater attacks 707.
  • At the World Cup, Albert assigns Aurors to heal injured Muggles and wizards and help separated relatives locate one another 357.
  • Auror protection extends to Hogwarts and senior officials attending public events 699 1102.

Defensive and Emergency Magic

  • Aurors use Shield Charms and counter-curses to protect their position from uncontrolled Fiendfyre during the war against the Undead 1538.
  • Albert orders a Patronus barrier around the Great Wall before Dementors can approach closely enough to disrupt weaker casters 1541.
  • Aurors help establish magical isolation fields and Muggle-Repelling Charms around Whitehall to preserve secrecy during an emergency 1255.
  • The Ministry permits Aurors to use Unforgivable Curses in critical circumstances, though permission does not mean every Auror uses them. Moody continues fighting with ordinary spells even under heavy attack 1018 1240.

Equipment

H94 Uniform

Allen designs the H94 to replace equipment assembled according to individual preference and experience. He intends Albert’s subordinates to receive it first, while its sharp appearance is also meant to attract capable recruits 316.

  • Collar badge — An “A” emblem with a black inner disc and white border 317.
  • Dragon-hide gloves and boots — Protective components of the uniform; the boots remain part of Armed Auror parade dress 317 1433.
  • Phantom Feather Cloak — Provides a Disillusionment Charm once every twenty-four hours and a gliding effect usable without additional concentration, allowing continued spellcasting 317.
  • Raven Mask — Included for protection and stealth. Allen designs the mask with nighttime arrests and Dark Wizards’ use of poison in mind 317.
  • Utility belt — Holds wands, potions, Dungbombs, a dissection kit, a Steel Mirror, and disguise tools 316 317.
  • Production manual — Albert prepares a manual and forwards it to Owen for manufacturing arrangements 317.

Other Equipment

  • Communication badges — Used both for Auror coordination and public distress calls; the Harris family sponsors their distribution to wizards 357 701.
  • Patrol coats and expanded backpacks — Patrol Aurors and Hit Wizards wear knee-length grey leather coats and carry backpacks enchanted with the Undetectable Extension Charm during the military review 1433.
  • Occlumency-like headbands — Umbrella researches mental-protection equipment for Aurors and its own forces. The prototype’s interference is weaker than genuine Occlumency and is not yet officially released 1091.
  • American Alchemy Bombs — United States Aurors reserve these weapons for enemy ships approaching their main base 1488.

History

Early American Aurors

MACUSA’s original twelve Aurors are volunteers prepared to sacrifice their lives. Its first task after establishment is to try the Scourers responsible for betraying, trafficking, torturing, and murdering fellow wizards. Only two of those twelve Aurors survive to old age, and the original recruits and several subsequent generations hold a highly respected place in American magical history 1076.

The founding families retain substantial political influence. Serving as an Auror becomes a tradition among their descendants, including Gondofus Graves 1076.

British Reform and the Death Eater Conflict

Albert’s young Aurors distinguish themselves during the Quidditch World Cup riot through disciplined collective action. Their success provides the foundation for the Armed Aurors, whose strength depends on coordinated training rather than overwhelming individual talent 357 1200.

Under Owen Harris’s administration, both Patrol and Armed Aurors increase their public presence. They arrest Dark Wizards, restrict grey-market businesses, and reassure residents and merchants, although their overlapping duties produce jurisdictional friction 675.

The Hogsmeade Devil attack exposes limitations in emergency response: an anti-Apparition barrier forces responding Aurors to approach from outside the village. Allen’s guards Pope and Pluto are killed, and the subsequent personnel shortage leads the Ministry to authorize Umbrella’s assistance 818 830.

Internal Conflict and Leadership Change

The divide between Patrol and Armed Aurors becomes explicit during the investigation of Herbert Borgin. Penelope refuses Scrimgeour’s demand to surrender suspects, citing direct Department of Magical Law Enforcement orders; her team Petrifies Patrol Aurors who intervene. Albert orders Scrimgeour and the incapacitated personnel escorted out 1243.

Scrimgeour subsequently leads an Auror strike. Owen chooses to rely on Umbrella’s armed forces rather than concede to the strikers 1253. After Scrimgeour disappears, the Patrol Aurors search for him and eventually end their strike. Albert becomes Auror Office Director, while Penelope assumes command of the Armed Aurors 1275.

International Warfare

The British reforms influence other European magical governments. Gondofus Graves describes the change as turning spies into an army and complains that American Aurors look poorly equipped beside their British counterparts 1120.

During the conflict with the United States, British Aurors use Crups and Werewolves to locate bases and traps. American Aurors attempt to conserve their Alchemy Bombs for a decisive attack, but Ravenclaw reveals their main base and dispels its illusions 1488.

Aurors and Hit Wizards from multiple countries later serve on the front line against the Undead. Their duties include defending fortifications, containing dangerous friendly magic, and supporting aerial combat operations; coordinated enemy ambushes can weaken shields and strike both Dragon riders and their mounts 1532 1538 1546.

Notable Personnel

  • Albert Harris — Elite Auror, trainer, and commander of the Armed Aurors; later succeeds Scrimgeour as Auror Office Director 316 331 707 1275.
  • Penelope Clearwater — Trains under Albert, becomes a formidable Auror, and ultimately commands the Armed Aurors. As Hogwarts’s Practical Magic professor, she emphasizes discipline as the foundation of their effectiveness 331 1097 1200 1275.
  • Rufus Scrimgeour — Auror Office Director associated with the Patrol Aurors; clashes with the Armed Aurors and later disappears under uncertain circumstances 707 1243 1275.
  • Alastor “Mad-Eye” Moody — Decorated veteran and recruit instructor. His injuries reflect years of fighting Dark Wizards without relying on Unforgivable Curses 332 1018.
  • Kingsley — Powerful veteran whose difficulties against multiple opponents at the World Cup illustrate the limits of individual strength without coordinated support 357.
  • Ramona Rosier / Wolf Mom — Former veteran Auror who loses her French post after killing her abusive husband. Owen appoints her captain of Allen’s guard squad, which later receives official Armed Auror positions 501 699.
  • Pluto Mulciber — Auror killed protecting Hermione. Allen places his recovered soul in a portrait so he can remain with his wife Olivo and their daughter 825.
