Background and History
At five, Itachi is already regarded as an Uchiha prodigy and is stronger than some Chūnin. Fugaku has taken him to a battlefield, an experience that leaves him questioning war and the meaning of life. Before entering the Ninja Academy, Itachi decides he wants to graduate early, despite the possibility of being sent to the front lines 2 9.
Itachi’s closest friend, Chiba, repeatedly challenges his belief that loyalty to Konoha and loyalty to the Uchiha should be easy to reconcile. At the academy entrance ceremony, Itachi notices that the Hokage’s public appeal for equal treatment does not change how people look at Chiba. He later finds that an academy account of Konoha’s founding largely passes over the Uchiha. At Obito’s memorial, the Hokage’s reluctance to say Obito’s Uchiha surname deepens Itachi’s questions about the divide between clan and village 7 8 43.
On the Kumogakure front, Itachi declares that he will represent the Uchiha in ending the war. His resolve to reclaim the clan’s glory leads to his three-tomoe Sharingan. He and Chiba return to Konoha as heroes, and Itachi experiences public recognition of the Uchiha’s wartime contributions 71 72 106.
Itachi subsequently joins Kakashi, Chiba, and Shisui on a covert mission against the Mist. The squad uses the operational codename Sin for him. After their return, he and his comrades face an attempted arrest ordered by Sarutobi Hiruzen, which Minato intervenes to stop 125 128 160.
Appearance
Itachi is described as a young boy with tear troughs and a serious, mature bearing 1 7.
- His Sharingan changes from two tomoe to three, and his Mangekyō takes a shuriken-shaped pattern 63 72 333.
- He wears Anbu attire and a white animal mask during the Mist Raid Squad’s deployment 129.
Personality
Itachi is thoughtful, often weighing the meaning of war and the responsibilities he may inherit from Fugaku. He initially argues that the Uchiha should be viewed as part of Konoha, but his experiences make him confront how differently the village treats his clan. Chiba calls him both prone to overthinking and too idealistic 2 43.
He dislikes war and killing, yet takes up dangerous missions for his clan and comrades. His protectiveness becomes especially clear when Orochimaru threatens his younger brother Sasuke: Itachi attacks with unmistakable killing intent and pursues Sasuke rather than joining another battle before he knows his brother is safe 71 293 332 334.
Abilities and Skills
Sharingan and Mangekyō Sharingan
- Awakens directly to two tomoe, then advances to three tomoe shortly afterward 63 72.
- The three-tomoe Sharingan greatly improves his combat ability; Itachi observes gains extending beyond vision to speed, power, ninjutsu, and chakra 109.
- His Mangekyō can inflict Tsukuyomi, subjecting Orochimaru to seventy-two hours of perceived torture in an instant 333 334.
- Amaterasu creates black flames that Itachi can extinguish with his Mangekyō. Using these ocular techniques causes pain and bleeding, and overuse risks blindness 333 334.
Ninjutsu and combat techniques
- Fire Release: Uses the Great Fireball Technique in a spar with Chiba 110.
- Crow Clone Technique: Uses chakra-infused crows as clones; the technique consumes less chakra than a Shadow Clone 110.
- Lightning Release Chakra Mode: Uses it while fighting Kumogakure ninja 281.
- Swordsmanship and shurikenjutsu: Can redirect thrown shuriken by colliding them mid-flight, sending attacks toward a target from multiple directions. He also fights with a blade 9 110.
- Sealing and genjutsu: Lists both among his specialties, though he considers his genjutsu and shurikenjutsu less developed than Shisui’s 128.
Relationships
- Uchiha Chiba — best friend and frequent sparring partner. Chiba’s guidance shapes Itachi’s views on the clan and village; Itachi trusts him during their missions 1 43 72 210.
- Uchiha Fugaku — father and Uchiha clan head. Fugaku prepares Itachi to represent the clan, while Itachi gradually comes to understand the weight of that responsibility 2 71.
- Uchiha Shisui — fellow Uchiha and Mist Raid Squad member. Itachi offers him guidance when Shisui must choose between his surveillance orders and their mission 127 128.
- Uchiha Sasuke — younger brother. Itachi confronts Orochimaru when Sasuke is threatened and later goes after Sasuke to ensure his safety 332 334.
- Kushina Uzumaki — teacher to Itachi and Chiba. Itachi nearly abandons his assignment when he fears that the Nine-Tails’ appearance means she has died 210.
- Kakashi Hatake — Mist Raid Squad captain and battlefield comrade 128 160.
