Background / History

Huang Rongyue is Huang He’s eldest daughter and the Huang Family’s Eldest Miss. Having traveled the jianghu from a young age, she developed martial ability, independence, and a more compassionate outlook than much of her family. She returns to the Huang estate amid the escalating Huang–Wang conflict and agrees to help her father despite misgivings about the family’s methods 38.

During the family crisis, she organizes the guards, assigns inexperienced recruits to safer positions near the estate, and publicly suppresses veteran guard Niu Kai for trying to bully them. She also personally distributes porridge to disaster victims, though the distribution becomes chaotic amid the city’s worsening unrest 39 40.

The Huang Family is later devastated by assassins. Huang He attempts to sacrifice himself so she can escape, but he is mortally wounded; Huang Rongyue is injured and loses consciousness during the attack. Lu Li, acting as Blood Ghost, saves her, and she discovers his identity after taking off his mask 68 70. Huang He subsequently dies after entrusting her care to Lu Li 101.

After the family’s fall, she travels with Lu Li to Qingfeng Prefecture and uses her Broken Mountain Sect credentials to secure entry for their group. Her attempt to bring Lu Li into the sect fails, exposing both the sect’s internal corruption and the opportunism of friends she had trusted 104 105.

Huang Rongyue is repeatedly described as an exceptionally beautiful young woman, often dressed in white robes or a white dress. Her gentle appearance contrasts sharply with the imposing aura she displays in battle.

Huang Rongyue is initially characterized by kindness, fairness, and a strong instinct to protect the vulnerable. She refuses to let veteran guards prey on inexperienced recruits, treats the newly recruited guards with consideration, and sincerely serves porridge to starving victims 39 40. She is generous toward those she considers friends, offering Blood Ghost wealth, access to the Huang treasury, and freedom of action in exchange for his friendship 44.

She is also impulsive where her family and Lu Li are concerned. During the Huang Family’s collapse, she repeatedly wants to fight rather than wait passively; later, she openly threatens Zhang Wu when she believes he is endangering Lu Li 42 83. Her admiration for Blood Ghost gradually becomes affection for Lu Li, though she attempts to overcome her dependence on his strength by cultivating harder herself 51 87 110.

Her experiences at the Broken Mountain Sect harden her outlook. Betrayed by former friends and humiliated by sect officials, she resolves to change her approach to people and power 105 107. By the conflict with Zuo Qingtian, she is willing to exploit his affection, use his resources, and ultimately betray him to advance her own designs for the Broken Mountain Sect 185 195.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Huang Family Conflict

Huang Rongyue returns to the Huang estate as the Huang and Wang Families move toward open conflict. She coordinates the guards, protects inexperienced recruits, and tries to preserve the family’s position while questioning her father’s pragmatism 38 39.

As Blood Ghost repeatedly intervenes against the Wang Family, she becomes determined to recruit him. His refusals initially leave her confused, but witnessing his ability to kill stronger opponents turns her interest into awe and admiration 44 51.

Discovery of Blood Ghost’s Identity

During the assassination of the Huang Family, Lu Li rescues Huang Rongyue and treats her injuries. She feigns unconsciousness, removes his mask, and discovers that Lu Li is Blood Ghost 70. Though frightened by what she sees, she accepts his offer of friendship and assists him in resolving the remaining crisis 71.

Fall of the Huang Family

The Huang Family is effectively destroyed amid the surrounding war. Huang Rongyue is gravely wounded, and Huang He dies after asking Lu Li to look after her. Lu Li agrees to remain her friend and companion on the martial path but rejects a romantic arrangement proposed by Huang He 97 101.

Broken Mountain Sect

Huang Rongyue leads Lu Li to Qingfeng Prefecture and attempts to use her sect connections to secure him a place in the Broken Mountain Sect. The effort fails, humiliating her and exposing that people she considered friends had used her for profit 104 105.

Following a frank conversation with Lu Li, she resolves to mature, change her approach to life, and eventually give him the Broken Mountain Sect itself 107. She later becomes Elder Qiu’s direct disciple and cultivates rapidly 184.

Zuo Qingtian and the Broken Mountain Sect Plot

The sect attempts to pair Huang Rongyue with Zuo Qingtian and orders the two to eliminate Lu Li. Huang Rongyue secretly warns Lu Li, then manipulates Zuo Qingtian’s infatuation to obtain resources and maneuver him into conflict with Lu Li 182 184 185.

She feigns grief and affection to encourage Zuo Qingtian’s hostility toward Lu Li, but ultimately stabs Zuo Qingtian from behind and joins Lu Li in killing him. Her stated objective is to remove the only Broken Mountain Sect disciple whose talent exceeds hers and gain access to more sect resources 186 193 195.

Flight and Sacrifice

After Zuo Qingtian’s death, Huang Rongyue and Lu Li are ambushed and pursued by powerful soldiers. She is severely injured, and Lu Li treats her despite lacking formal medical training 197. When confronted by Zhang Meng, she refuses to abandon Lu Li and activates Other Shore No Peace, accepting the loss of consciousness and cultivation as the price of fighting beside him 199.
