Background / History

Obito grew up as an underperforming but determined Konoha shinobi who wanted to become Hokage. He was frequently late, relied on Rin for support, and treated Kakashi as a rival despite Kakashi’s far greater early achievements. Beneath his boasting, he was sincere, valued comrades, and refused to abandon them 330 455 458.

During the Kannabi Bridge Destruction Mission, Obito awakened his Sharingan while protecting Kakashi. He was crushed beneath falling rocks while rescuing his teammate and gave Kakashi his left Sharingan before being presumed dead 455. Madara recovered him, reconstructed half his body with Hashirama-enhanced material, and cultivated him as the executor of the Eye of the Moon Plan 215 455.

Rin’s death shattered Obito’s remaining attachment to Konoha. He awakened the Mangekyō Sharingan after seeing her die by Kakashi’s hand, embraced Madara’s worldview, and began pursuing a dream world in which Rin could exist again 215 247. Madara had selected him not principally for talent, but because Obito’s kindness and emotional attachment made him easier to corrupt and control 232.

Appearance

As a youth, Obito had a sturdy build, bright eyes, a scarred forehead protector, and distinctive goggles. His early appearance reflected his energetic and optimistic nature 389.

  • Wore goggles as a child and a Konoha forehead protector.
  • Lost the left side of his body during the Kannabi Bridge incident; it was later replaced with Hashirama-enhanced material 455.
  • Operated behind masks, most notably an orange spiral mask centered on his right eye while posing as Tobi 456.
  • Later adopted the name and imposing persona of “Uchiha Madara,” concealing his original identity beneath a mask 458.

Personality

Obito began as a weak but earnest boy: competitive with Kakashi, devoted to Rin, and openly committed to protecting his comrades. His wish to become Hokage was rooted in a desire for recognition and belonging 314 458.

After Rin’s death, he attempted to erase “Uchiha Obito” by becoming Tobi and then “Uchiha Madara.” His attachment to Rin became an obsession; rather than accept her loss, he sought to replace reality itself with Infinite Tsukuyomi 210 330 458. His cruelty was therefore inseparable from self-denial: the real world represented both the happiness and the pain he could no longer bear 249.

As an antagonist, Obito was patient, deceptive, and highly adaptive. He manipulated people through partial truths, tailored his approach to each ally, and maintained contingency plans for Nagato, Sasuke, Naruto, Yagura, and Madara 248 363. However, his emotions repeatedly compromised his judgment—particularly against Minato, Naruto, Kakashi, and anyone connected to Rin 456 457.

Abilities & Skills

Mangekyō Sharingan: Kamui

Obito’s right-eye Kamui transfers himself, parts of his body, or targets he touches into the Kamui dimension. By shifting portions of his body away, he creates the appearance of intangibility 244 455.

  • Can phase through incoming attacks by transferring the struck part of his body into another dimension.
  • Can transport himself and targets at close range; his right eye is most effective face-to-face 455.
  • Uses Kamui as both an evasion tool and an ambush technique.
  • His left eye, given to Kakashi, transfers targets at the focal point of its vision rather than requiring physical contact 244 285.
  • Absorbing other people is slower than his self-phasing; Fifth Gate Guy interrupted an attempted capture of Naruto 290.
  • Kamui’s mechanics became vulnerable once opponents understood its timing and dimensional connection 363.

Sharingan Genjutsu and Ocular Control

Obito possessed ocular power sufficient to control the Nine-Tails and subjugate Yagura, the Fourth Mizukage and a Three-Tails jinchūriki 246 418.

  • Controlled the Nine-Tails during the attack on Konoha.
  • Maintained control over Yagura and used him to influence Kirigakure’s Bloody Mist era 248 456.
  • Used his knowledge of the Rinnegan, Tailed Beasts, and Demonic Statue to support his false identity as Madara 363.

Hashirama-Enhanced Body and Wood Release

Madara’s reconstruction of Obito’s body gave him exceptional physical endurance and access to Wood Release 215 455.

  • Half of his body was formed from Hashirama-enhanced material.
  • Could survive severe bodily damage and continue fighting after losing limbs 236 455.
  • Developed a one-armed combat style after receiving the reconstructed body 455.
  • Combined Wood Release with Kamui to eliminate an entire Hidden Mist force alone 246.
  • Could control the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path 455.

Fire Release and Barrier Techniques

Obito retained the Uchiha clan’s Fire Release proficiency even while relying primarily on Kamui 418.

  • Fire Style: Blast Wave Wild Dance could rival Madara’s Majestic Destroyer Flame when used as a combination technique 418.
  • Used the Uchiha Flame Formation to defend the Demonic Statue from the Eight-Tails 457.
  • Demonstrated strong taijutsu, reaction speed, and durability while fighting Naruto, Killer B, Kakashi, and Guy simultaneously 246.

Izanagi

Obito used Izanagi to survive Konan’s six hundred billion explosive tags after she had prepared a countermeasure for Kamui 246.

  • Converts an unfavorable reality into an illusion at the cost of an eye.
  • Allowed him to survive an attack designed around the known limits of his intangibility.
  • Reinforced his strategy of withholding abilities until opponents believed they understood him 246 363.

Rinnegan and the New Six Paths of Pain

After taking the Rinnegan from Konan, Obito used its Outer Path powers to direct jinchūriki as the New Six Paths of Pain 249 457.

  • Shared vision and perception through the controlled jinchūriki.
  • Used black receivers and the Outer Path to command his Six Paths.
  • Led the New Six Paths of Pain in attempts to capture Naruto and Killer B 457.
  • Was considered the leading combat force during the early Fourth Shinobi World War after gaining the Rinnegan 418 457.

Ten-Tails Jinchūriki Powers

Obito revived the Ten-Tails and sealed it within himself, reaching a level that Hashirama acknowledged as beyond his own 457.

  • Destroyed Hashirama’s Senjutsu Gate of the Great God.
  • Overpowered the reincarnated Hokage, Naruto in Kurama Mode, and Sasuke’s Susanoo 457.
  • Wielded Truth-Seeking Orbs after gaining greater control of the Ten-Tails.
  • Lost access to Kamui while serving as the Ten-Tails’ jinchūriki 457.

Relationships

  • Rin Nohara — Obito’s teammate and the person whose death became the core of his hatred of reality and his pursuit of Infinite Tsukuyomi 210 256 330.
  • Hatake Kakashi — Rival, teammate, and former best friend. Obito entrusted Kakashi with his left Sharingan; their shared Kamui later became crucial against Madara and Kaguya 285 457.
  • Namikaze Minato — Obito’s teacher. Obito blamed Minato for failing to save Rin and fought him during the Nine-Tails Attack, but Minato defeated him by exploiting his impatience 204 456.
  • Uchiha Madara — Rescuer, mentor, and manipulator. Madara rebuilt Obito’s body and tasked him with collecting the Tailed Beasts and reviving him; Obito ultimately intended to betray him and become the savior of the plan himself 247 455.
  • Nagato and Konan — Partners of convenience whom Obito deceived into rebuilding Akatsuki. He treated Nagato as both an essential asset and an obstacle whose death would let him reclaim the Rinnegan 247 248.
  • Uchiha Itachi — Uneasy collaborator in the Uchiha clan massacre. Obito later sought to use Itachi against Nagato, while Itachi warned Sasuke that the masked man was dangerous 247 254.
  • Uchiha Sasuke — Pawn, protégé, and potential successor. Obito revealed a selective account of the Uchiha massacre, pushed Sasuke toward the Eight-Tails and the Five Kage Summit, and repeatedly ensured his survival 248 249 456.
  • Uzumaki Naruto — Obito’s ideological opposite and eventual redeemer. Naruto’s refusal to abandon reality forced Obito to confront the person he had become 249 330.
  • Yakushi Kabuto — A dangerous and distrusted ally. Kabuto gained leverage over Obito by revealing reanimated Madara, forcing Obito into an alliance while intensifying his caution 246.
  • Black Zetsu — Nominal helper and hidden supervisor of Madara’s plan. Obito questioned Black Zetsu closely before fully committing to the Eye of the Moon Plan 248 455.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Nine-Tails Attack

Obito attacked Konoha during Kushina’s childbirth to seize the Nine-Tails, avenge Rin, weaken Konoha, and deepen conflict between the village and the Uchiha clan 256. He was defeated by Minato, but the incident still led to Minato and Kushina’s deaths and left the village severely weakened 456.

Manipulation of Akatsuki

Acting as “Uchiha Madara,” Obito used Akatsuki to gather Tailed Beasts while buying time to prepare against Madara’s eventual revival 247. He persuaded Nagato through the Tailed Beast Weapon Plan, offered Kisame the Eye of the Moon Plan as a purpose, and helped Itachi carry out the Uchiha clan massacre 363.

Sasuke and the Five Kage Summit

After Sasuke defeated Orochimaru and Deidara, Obito identified him as a potentially stronger replacement for Itachi and Nagato 248. He weaponized Sasuke’s grief by revealing a distorted version of the Uchiha massacre, assigned him to capture the Eight-Tails, and used the Five Kage Summit to intensify conflict before declaring the Fourth Shinobi World War 248 456.

Fourth Shinobi World War and Redemption

Obito led the war to capture the remaining jinchūriki, revive the Ten-Tails, and cast Infinite Tsukuyomi 249 457. After becoming the Ten-Tails’ jinchūriki, he was defeated as his resolve collapsed under Naruto’s challenge 457. He ultimately rejected Madara’s path, transported Tailed Beast chakra to Naruto, shielded Naruto and Sasuke, and gave Kakashi the power needed to use dual Mangekyō Kamui against Kaguya 224 457 458.
