In chaotic Brooklyn, the Sixth District was undoubtedly the most dangerous area. If the rent weren't cheap, nobody in their right mind would want to live there.
William had lived here for many years. His neighbors were always changing, from gangbangers to middle-aged cops, from schoolgirls to athletes...
But he had never expected that one day, an agent would move in next door!
"Don't worry, I'm here to protect you." That was what Coulson said, but William knew he was definitely here to keep an eye on him. Still, wasn't he being a little too obvious about it?
Coulson took out something that looked like a wallet from his suitcase. William opened it and saw that it was actually a S.H.I.E.L.D. ID. It had his photo, name, and designation: S.H.I.E.L.D. Consultant.
"William, you've successfully completed the side quest: S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent. Congratulations, you've received an experience reward and reached level 3. Rewards: Loot Box x1, 200 Coins."
As soon as William saw the ID, Athena's voice rang out. He'd been wondering why the side quest hadn't been marked complete, even though he'd already agreed to join S.H.I.E.L.D.
Apparently, he didn't officially count as a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent until he received his ID.
"This is your ID. After discussing it, we've decided that for now, you'll remain a pizza delivery guy." Coulson said seriously:
"That's your cover identity. Your real role now is S.H.I.E.L.D. consultant, and you'll help us deal with all sorts of problems. Of course, we'll provide appropriate compensation!"
William rolled his eyes. They were using his pizza delivery job to cover his activities? That was just like S.H.I.E.L.D.
"If there's nothing else, I'm going inside." William yawned. "I've been busy all day, and I'm exhausted. I'm going to get some sleep. I have to get up early for work tomorrow."
"Call me if you need anything." Coulson gave him a meaningful look. "Remember, I live right next door."
Once he got home, William hurriedly locked the door. He searched the place for cameras and bugs. He didn't want anyone listening in or watching while he showered or used the bathroom.
He searched for ages but didn't find anything, and only then did he relax. His place was so rundown that there was hardly anywhere to hide a bug. Who knew being poor could have its advantages?
Still, he'd already applied to S.H.I.E.L.D. for an advance on his pay. After all this time in the Marvel Universe, he could finally climb out of poverty.
"William, you have a Loot Box. Would you like me to open it?"
William was in a good mood. He wanted to get to bed early tonight, so he wasn't going to wait until midnight to open it.
"Open it now!"
The only Loot Box appeared in his mind. A cheerful tune played as it began to shake, and three beams of light shot out, appearing before his eyes.
White! Blue...
Looks like another round of blue skies and white clouds. Just as William started to feel disappointed, the third reward popped out. It was green!
Green? If William remembered correctly, the Overwatch System's Loot Boxes had four item tiers: white, blue, purple, and gold. There was also one special kind of item that was green.
An Overwatch hero!
The odds of getting a hero from a Loot Box were very low. That was why, despite opening five or six boxes, William had only gotten a second hero now. He was curious: who would it be?
"Honor, life, redemption."
The mysterious man before him had his hair tied back, with a handsome lock of hair sweeping across his forehead and a few strands of white at his temples.
His left chest was exposed, bearing a large Dragon Tattoo. His right arm and both legs were fitted with high-tech gear that let him scale walls and cross rooftops. A sake flask hung from his waist, a quiver was slung across his back, and he held a longbow in his hands.
"Ha... Hanzo?" William hadn't expected his second hero to be Hanzo.
Why was he surprised? Because Hanzo occupied a rather awkward position in Overwatch.
Hanzo's bow had all kinds of powerful abilities. He could fire a Sonic Arrow to scout out enemies, or use Scatter Arrow to attack several enemies at once. He could climb walls and obstacles to attack from above. Or he could summon the terrifying Dragonstrike, letting a dragon devour his enemies.
By all rights, Hanzo should have been a powerful character, but his difficulty was extremely high, and he was very hard to master.
There was no way to know whether your arrow would hit an enemy. Sometimes, you'd even kill someone without aiming. That was how the nicknames "Fate Arrow" and "Mystical Hanzo" had caught on.
A skilled Hanzo was the most terrifying sniper around, no less deadly than Widowmaker. But first, you had to be able to hit your shots. A lot of new players loved playing Hanzo, only to throw the match for their teammates because they couldn't aim.
William wore an awkward expression. He wasn't sure whether getting Hanzo was a good thing or a bad thing, since he was one of those people who couldn't aim.
"Athena, I want to train!"
William spoke in a low voice. He knew the next battle wasn't far off, and he had to master Hanzo's archery and abilities before then. After all, Hanzo's ultimate was incredibly cool!
"Entering Virtual Training Grounds..."
As soon as William called for Athena, the Overwatch symbol on the back of his hand lit up. One by one, white points of light surrounded him. When the light faded, he had vanished without a trace. No one knew where he had gone.
William had searched the whole apartment and hadn't found any cameras or bugs, but he'd forgotten one place: the Captain America poster on the wall.
There was a pinhole camera in Captain America's eye. At that moment, the lens began to move. Unless you looked at it with a magnifying glass, there was no way you'd spot it.
Coulson was in a foul mood as he cleaned the apartment. On Director Fury's orders, he'd moved in next door to William. The camera in Captain America's eye had been secretly installed by S.H.I.E.L.D. to keep a closer watch on him.
But the conditions in this rental were just awful. Dust was everywhere, and Coulson had even found a dead rat under the sofa.
After a quick cleanup, he hurriedly activated the surveillance system. He hadn't expected to see something so shocking.
Just moments ago, William had been sitting obediently on the bed. The next instant, white light enveloped his whole body, and in the blink of an eye, he had vanished from the room.
Coulson could hardly believe his eyes. How could a grown man disappear right under his nose?
Director Fury's orders were to keep a close eye on William. But now William was gone. What was he supposed to do?
"Sir, I've run into an unexpected situation. The target is gone!" Coulson hesitated, then called him anyway.
"What? He disappeared?" Nick Fury sounded surprised. "Keep watching. The moment he reappears, notify me immediately."
"Yes, sir!"
