Background

Li Wei was a Chinese Overwatch player who died after being electrocuted while gaming. He awoke in the body of William Lister, a young Brooklyn man with light-blond hair and blue eyes, then chose to live under William's name. 1

William's inherited life was impoverished. He worked as a pizza delivery driver, sent half of his income to his younger brother Tom for school, and had a father, Franz Liszt, imprisoned for killing a man after losing money gambling. 1 113

He initially believed William's mother had died of illness. Franz later revealed that she had actually been struck by a car during a Brooklyn riot; her death led Franz into alcoholism, gambling, and eventual imprisonment. William forgave him and promised to visit monthly. 113

Athena subsequently bound the Overwatch System to William's soul, giving him access to hero transformations, missions, Loot Boxes, and an Overwatch-mark tattoo on the back of his left hand. 2 179

Personality

William is playful, sarcastic, and prone to deliberately irritating friends and enemies with jokes. He calls Tony Stark his “assistant,” mocks Sitwell's baldness as a superpower, and routinely hides serious concerns behind humor. 161 179

Despite his evasiveness and habit of concealing information, he acts decisively when civilians are endangered. His first use of Soldier: 76 comes from his refusal to watch bank robbers kill a hostage, even though he is afraid of being exposed. 7 10
