Background / History

The Dugu Family’s Jade Phosphorus Snake Martial Soul carries a hereditary poison that attacks its host as well as enemies. Its toxicity increases with cultivation. Dugu Bo survived by suppressing it with Titled Douluo-level strength, but watched his descendants—including Dugu Yan’s father—die from the same condition. He initially concealed the truth from his granddaughter, eventually admitting that reaching the Soul Emperor realm would trigger a fatal eruption of her accumulated toxins 4 9 24.

Despite being regarded as the continent’s foremost poison expert, he could not save his family through his own methods. Ye Qing’s treatment finally gave him a way to contain the poison without sacrificing his poison cultivation. Dugu Yan’s subsequent Martial Soul evolution removed her own life-threatening imbalance, ending the immediate danger to the surviving Dugu bloodline 11 23 24.

Appearance

Dugu Bo is an elderly man with green hair, emerald eyes, and a beard. His appearance and Soul Power share the green coloration of his poison-based Martial Soul 23 36 114.

  • Hair: Described as waist-length and emerald green before being partly scorched during Ye Qing’s attack; later depicted as dark green and falling over his shoulders 23 114.
  • Eyes: Green, serpent-like eyes with slit pupils 17 114 125.
  • Clothing: Wears robes, including a dark-green robe while guarding Ye Qing’s cultivation 36 111.
  • Aura: Releases eerie green light and dense emerald poisonous mist, which can darken until nearly black 36 114.

Personality

Dugu Bo is proud, sharp-tongued, and easily provoked by disrespect. Ye Qing’s teasing repeatedly draws threats and retaliatory “tests,” particularly when his granddaughter openly favors the younger man. His jealousy persists even after he accepts Ye Qing: watching Dugu Yan adjust her fiancé’s collar or kiss him instead of thanking her grandfather can send him into a rage 17 34 154.

His harshness contrasts with his tenderness toward Dugu Yan. He yields when she demands that he spare Ye Qing, changes instantly into an affectionate grandfather in her presence, and regards her safety as more important than status or political authority. That devotion can become ruthlessness: he is willing to kill a crown prince or annihilate a clan if he believes she is threatened 10 38 102 103.

He nevertheless keeps his promises and remembers debts. After Ye Qing cures the family’s poison, Dugu Bo provides resources, protection, and dangerous Soul Beast hunts despite constant complaints. He also accepts reasoned restraint when Ye Qing explains how impulsive revenge would endanger Dugu Yan’s future 37 103.

Abilities & Skills

Poison Mastery

  • Jade Phosphorous Serpent Poison: His initial test attack is potent enough to kill a Soul Emperor 17.
  • Corrosive poison: Can turn steel into molten iron in a single breath 17.
  • Neurotoxin: Can immediately paralyze Soul Masters below the Soul Sage rank 17.
  • Secret mixed poison: A formula developed over ten years, described as having no cure 17.
  • Life-bound Serpent Emperor poison: A trump card released through Martial Soul Possession. Its aura corrodes the air and rapidly withers surrounding vegetation 17.
  • Area poisoning: Excels against large groups. He claims his poison could destroy the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan despite his being weaker than its patriarch; this remains a threat rather than an accomplished feat 36 103 149.

Jade Phosphorous Serpent Emperor

  • Martial Soul Possession: Manifests the Serpent Emperor’s power through his body, strengthening his attacks and allowing him to release his life-bound poison 17 22.
  • Seventh Soul Skill—Martial Soul Avatar: Transforms him into an enormous jade-green venomous serpent. Its size is described as mountain-like or extending hundreds of meters 23 120 125.
  • Physical resilience: Retains a Titled Douluo’s bodily durability even while suppressing his Soul Power during sparring 22.
  • Defensive application: Swallows Ye Qing’s Buddha Fury Fire Lotus with his Avatar to prevent its explosion from reaching Dugu Yan 23.

Medusa Gaze and Time Stasis

  • Medusa Gaze: Petrifies the Crimson Flame Ancient Tree during the canyon hunt 45.
  • Time Stasis: Immobilizes the beasts, providing an opening for his poison attack 45.
  • Combined application: Uses these disabling abilities before flooding the battlefield with Jade Phosphorous Divine Light 45.

Jade Phosphorous Divine Light

  • Releases a vast wave of poisonous light capable of penetrating and corroding powerful Soul Beasts 45.
  • Amplifies it with Snowy Swan Kiss to defeat the seventy-thousand-year Crimson Flame Ancient Tree and ninety-thousand-year Ice and Fire Demon Wolf King 44 45.
  • Uses the same combination in a desperate, full-strength attack against the Heavenly Snow Woman, but fails to overcome her 120.

Soul Power Pressure and Barriers

  • Creates private Soul Power barriers for conversations and protective barriers while Ye Qing absorbs dangerous Soul Rings 37 46.
  • Suppresses a hostile Soul Sage with his aura alone, forcing him to his knees, injuring him, and overwhelming his Soul Rings 114.
  • Drives two competing Soul Beast armies away from the Iceberg Snow Lotus without killing them 119.
  • Seals off an entire valley to prevent interference with Ye Qing’s cultivation 111.

Expertise and Limitations

  • Assesses Ye Qing’s combat strength through controlled sparring and identifies suitable high-year Soul Beasts for his Martial Soul 22 23 43.
  • Diagnoses Dugu Yan’s External Eye Soul Bone and recognizes the danger of revealing it publicly 68.
  • Poison resistance is not total combat immunity: Ye Qing’s Chaos Green Flame neutralizes his pure toxins, but Ye Qing acknowledges that a poison attack reinforced with Titled Douluo-level Soul Power could still injure him 17 18.
  • Difficult matchups: The Golden Sacred Dragon’s concentrated offense diminishes his poison’s effectiveness and repeatedly forces him back 149.
  • Power ceiling: He is described as the weakest Titled Douluo by reputation and becomes cautious when Tang Hao or Spirit Hall’s stronger Douluos are involved 101 103.
  • Knowledge gaps: Does not recognize the Dark Demon Evil God Tiger and relies on Ye Qing to explain its abilities 106.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Sixty-thousand-year skull Soul Bone — Receives the accumulated poison extracted from his blood, bones, and meridians. He later states that he possesses only one sixty-thousand-year Soul Bone 23 47.
  • Snowy Swan Kiss — An immortal herb supplied by Ye Qing that amplifies poison hundreds, thousands, or even tens of thousands of times. Its amplification is described as irreversible and beyond antidotes 44.

  • Ruyi Hundred Treasure Pouch — A storage Soul Tool that preserves living plants and medicinal herbs. Dugu Bo provides one to Ye Qing 13.

  • Ye Qing — Initially an unwanted suitor, later his benefactor, prospective grandson-in-law, and trusted ally. Their constant insults conceal genuine respect; Dugu Bo eventually risks his life to protect him 9 37 120 125.
  • Prince Xue Xing — A contact whom Dugu Bo approaches to arrange Ye Qing’s enrollment at Heaven Dou Royal Academy 25.
  • Yu Tianheng — Dugu Yan’s other pursuer, whom Dugu Bo uses as a test of Ye Qing’s ability to face romantic rivalry and powerful sect influence 25.
  • Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan — A hostile faction after its assassination attempt against the Imperial Fighting Team. Dugu Bo considers exterminating it, but agrees to postpone revenge at Ye Qing’s urging 103.

  • Ye Qing identifies herbs capable of curing the bloodline poison, then explains that direct consumption would also destroy Dugu Bo’s cultivated poison techniques 10 11.
  • Dugu Bo makes marriage approval conditional on Ye Qing initially detoxifying him within one year. He permits access to the garden and later supplies a storage pouch 12 13.
  • His attempted revenge through a poison-immunity test fails when the Chaos Green Flame neutralizes every toxin, including his life-bound poison 16 17.

Cultivation Mentor and Family Benefactor

  • Escorts Ye Qing across Sunset Forest, Star Dou Great Forest, volcanic regions, and the Far North during three months of Soul Ring hunting 21.
  • Tests the resulting skills while progressively raising his suppressed Soul Power, then takes the Buddha Fury Fire Lotus head-on to protect Dugu Yan 22 23.

Far North Confrontation

  • Clears the battlefield around the Hundred-Thousand-Year Iceberg Snow Lotus so Ye Qing can claim it 119.
  • Tries to defend Ye Qing against the Heavenly Snow Woman, committing his full cultivation and amplified poison despite being outmatched. She defeats and freezes him 120.
