Background / History

Ryūchi Cave is one of the Three Great Sage Lands alongside Mount Myōboku and Shikkotsu Forest. It possesses a complete Sage Art tradition and is contracted by Orochimaru; Shiraha later signs its summoning contract under Orochimaru's guidance 32 37 67.

During Kakuzu's attack, Verta reverse-summons Shiraha and Kushina into the cave rather than fight for them. Verta then leads them to the central temple, where they undergo the Three Great Princesses' trials before meeting the White Snake Sage 76 77.

After passing the trials, Shiraha receives one of the White Snake Sage's scales for his bloodline research. Kushina gives her reward to Shiraha, allowing him to obtain permission to enter and leave Ryūchi Cave freely; Tatsuhime later provides its reverse summoning scroll 78 79.

Shiraha and Kushina later return through the scroll to seek Dragon Transformation Grass and Garaga's cells. Their visit establishes that powerful snakes maintain separate territories and that internal conflict is not prohibited within the cave 82.

Appearance

Ryūchi Cave is an enormous, dark and damp cavern system filled with mist, muddy ground, and snakes of every size. Its interior opens into spaces so vast that visitors cannot see the ceiling or surrounding stone walls 77.

• A majestic central palace bears a plaque reading “Ryūchi Cave” and is illuminated by golden lanterns 77.
• The White Snake Sage's temple contains a dragon-head stone carving and a stone platform beneath it 78.
• Snakes are abundant throughout the caves; most are ordinary-sized, though powerful individuals produce distinct Energy Field fluctuations 77.
• The cave is described as the largest of the Three Great Sage Lands, with its true extent known only to the White Snake Sage 77.

Natural Energy and Sage Arts

Ryūchi Cave maintains a Sage Art inheritance based on Natural Energy and Sage Chakra. Sage Chakra is formed by mixing Natural Energy with Mental Energy and Physical Energy in a specific ratio, greatly amplifying ninjutsu, taijutsu, and genjutsu 37.

Serpent Cultivation

Snakes of Ryūchi Cave are born able to absorb Natural Energy. They grow primarily through sleeping, eating, and consuming Dragon Transformation Grass; accumulated Natural Energy is converted into Sage Chakra as they mature 82 84.

• A snake's size generally reflects its strength, Natural Energy reserves, and lifespan 82.
• Snakes with sufficient Natural Energy and Sage Chakra can gain human form 82.
• The ultimate aspiration of Ryūchi Cave's snakes is to become dragons—an elevation in life level rather than merely a physical transformation 82.
• Excess Natural Energy is difficult to control; Dragon Transformation Grass stabilizes it and accelerates its accumulation 82.

Risks

Ryūchi Cave Sage Arts are regarded as highly dangerous. Orochimaru is stated to have been unable to learn them because his Yin-natured talent was insufficient 78.

• Shiraha finds that practicing Ryūchi Cave Sage Arts would contaminate his bloodline and reduce its purity 177.
• Verta suggests that humans might use Dragon Transformation Grass only after learning Ryūchi Cave Sage Arts and partially snake-ifying their bodies 84.
• Natural Energy leaking from one of Ryūchi Cave's entrances caused the Libra Clan to unconsciously absorb it, amplifying their Mental Power until many lost control and went berserk 177.

Inhabitants

• White Snake Sage — Founder-level authority of Ryūchi Cave; an immensely powerful white phosphorus serpent capable of assuming an elderly human form. Her chakra intensity rivals a portion of Kurama's 78 188.
• Tagorihime — One of the Three Great Princesses. She administers an illusion trial that disguises foul mud as a banquet and a graveyard as a palace 77.
• Tatsuhime — One of the Three Great Princesses and the White Snake Sage's daughter. She escorts successful visitors, provides the reverse summoning scroll, and performs the return summoning 77 79.
• Ichikishimahime — One of the Three Great Princesses, present with Tatsuhime and Tagorihime before the White Snake Sage 79.
• Manda — The current leader of Ryūchi Cave's giant snakes. His authority carries greater weight than the White Snake Sage's for many serpents, though he is notably restrained near her temple 77 79.
• Garaga — A powerful fire-attribute giant snake with a Reverse Scale and a petrifying liquid secret technique. Even Manda avoids provoking him 82.
• Verta — An ink-green giant serpent initially over twenty meters long. She can speak, indicating considerable Natural Energy and Sage Chakra mastery; after years of Shiraha's cultivation, she grows beyond one hundred meters 67 170.
• White Serpent — Originally an ordinary Ryūchi Cave snake, later cultivated by Shiraha into a giant summoning beast over sixty to seventy meters long 122 170.

Access and Summoning Contracts

Ryūchi Cave can be reached through a blood-signed summoning contract or its reverse summoning scroll 67 79.

• A contract requires the summoner to sign in blood and leave five fingerprints 67.
• Names marked with a black “X” on the contract belong to deceased contractors; red “X” marks indicate terminated contracts 67.
• Orochimaru warns that most Ryūchi Cave snakes respect his contractors, but powerful and hot-tempered snakes may still be dangerous 66.
• Ordinary snakes cannot use Reverse Summoning because they lack hands to form seals; serpents that cultivate human forms, such as the Three Great Princesses, can send visitors out 77.
• Tatsuhime warns that some areas are not open to wandering visitors and that trespassers may be eaten 79.

Customs and Internal Order

Ryūchi Cave's snakes recognize individual territories, especially among powerful giant serpents. Garaga does not consume the Dragon Transformation Grass in his territory, but he prevents other snakes from entering or harvesting it 82.

• Ryūchi Cave does not forbid snakes from killing one another 82.
• Verta states that the cave's clan does not harm contractors without provocation, retaliating only if a contractor attacks a snake or forcibly breaks a contract 77.
• The Three Great Princesses test visitors through illusions before allowing them to meet the White Snake Sage 77.
• The White Snake Sage can reward those who complete the trials, including with Sage Art instruction, materials, or access privileges 78.
