Power Progression

Stage / Realm / Level Chapter Notes
Completed Eight Branches Technique 175 Has ceased to be human in the ordinary sense and gained snake-like sensory abilities. At this point, Shiraha considers his modifications insufficient to qualify him as a Bloodline Warlock.
Initial bloodline supplementation 176 Receives the Companion Serpent Meditation Method and Shiraha’s blood to address his deteriorating soul. The method requires an aptitude he initially lacks; receiving it does not immediately establish successful cultivation.
Newly cultivated vessel 240 241 Uses cloning technology, Shin’s transplantation-compatible physique, highly active Hashirama cells, and collected Uchiha and Hyūga cells to produce a new body.
Absorption of Isshiki’s soul and Original Chakra 241 Defeats the Isshiki occupying Shinnō’s body. Diluted Shiraha’s Blood strengthens his Mental Power during the soul struggle; he devours Isshiki and erases Shiraha’s soul aura from himself.
First-Class Apprentice 242 Successfully constructs eighteen Will runes and enters the introductory stage of the Companion Serpent Meditation Method. His Mental Power begins increasing rapidly.
Third-Class Apprentice 245 Advances through consecutive breakthroughs while recovering and assimilating Isshiki’s Chakra. Demonstrates both Byakugan and Three-Tomoe Sharingan; judges his strength to have surpassed the contemporary Five Kage.
Third-Level lifeform — biological classification 253 Shiraha identifies his transformed life level as Third-Level. This is explicitly not equivalent to the combat power or cultivation rank of a Third-Level Wizard or Warlock.
Shiraha’s direct bloodline dependent 262 263 Voluntarily injects purified Shiraha’s Blood and subsequently absorbs more. Gains rapid healing, stronger physique, and enhanced Mental Power, but places his life under Shiraha’s bloodline control.
First-Level Symbiotic Serpent Warlock 265 Advances after more than a year of recovery and cultivation supported by Shiraha’s resources. Without bloodline suppression, his strength is described as no weaker than Shiraha’s at that time.
Rinnegan manifested 274 Appears with pale-violet, concentric-ring eyes and powerful Eye Power. The supplied account does not specify the awakening process.

Background / History

Konoha commander and teacher

Orochimaru initially appears as a reserved but recognizably ordinary young man. Nawaki persuades him to attend dinner to help keep Tsunade from becoming drunk and unruly; he exchanges polite greetings with Shiraha and is eventually dragged away by Tsunade 17.

His early research interest is connected to Nawaki’s welfare. After Shiraha promises to pursue a means of regenerating Nawaki’s severed leg, Orochimaru visits him at night, tests his resolve, and leaves a scroll containing valuable information 34.

As commander-in-chief of the Western Battlefield, Orochimaru earns substantial military merit, although his popularity trails that of Tsunade and White Fang. The Third Hokage assigns Class 12—Shiraha, Uchiha Chiho, and Hyuga Hideto—to him. Shiraha suspects that the appointment is partly intended to balance competing sources of prestige within Konoha 56.

Orochimaru offers Shiraha instruction in experimental research and Forbidden Technique development, openly acknowledging that Tsunade surpasses him in Medical Ninjutsu. He formally accepts the three teammates as disciples and brings Shiraha into his underground laboratory 57 61.

His battlefield leadership inspires confidence across both clan and civilian shinobi: he repeatedly leads large-scale frontal engagements from the front rather than remaining behind his soldiers 111. By the time he accepts the twelve-year-old Chūnin Anko Mitarashi as a disciple, many villagers regard him as the likely Fourth Hokage 138.

Secret experiments and defection

Hiruzen authorizes Orochimaru to research First Hokage Cells under strict secrecy and also entrusts him with monitoring Danzo and Root. Orochimaru’s experiences of recurring war leave him increasingly disillusioned and questioning the meaning of life 61.

When the Wood Release Experiment is terminated, Danzo offers materials and access to Forbidden Techniques in exchange for priority access to results. Orochimaru agrees to continue secretly, with Nawaki’s recovery remaining one of his motivations, and becomes evasive about his activities when Shiraha questions him 63.

The discovery that Orochimaru has used Konoha shinobi in human experiments destroys Hiruzen’s trust in his favored successor. Orochimaru defects, escapes Nawaki’s Wood Release restraint, and is intercepted by Jiraiya and later Kakashi. Shiraha helps prevent the confrontation with Kakashi from escalating and offers Orochimaru somewhere to stay 142.

Orochimaru later describes Danzo as having framed him and recalls being seriously injured by a surprise attack from Hiruzen. Settling in the Land of Rice Fields, he resolves to continue researching Forbidden Techniques wherever he can find peace, while recognizing that his knowledge of Danzo’s secrets makes him a liability 143 175.

Half a year after his defection, he uses Living Corpse Reincarnation on a subordinate who willingly offers his body. The vessel proves incompatible: even after more than three years, Orochimaru’s soul has not fully recovered 241.

Otogakure and independent research

The Daimyo of the Land of Rice Fields becomes an important patron, allowing Orochimaru to maintain laboratories and live comfortably despite his missing-nin status 179. By early Konoha Year 56, he has founded Otogakure in a secluded valley and secured heavy investment from the daimyo 237.

The village contains over a hundred shinobi, approximately half recruited rogue ninja and half survivors of Orochimaru’s experiments. Many followers see the former Hokage candidate as a wronged rebel or lifesaver. Despite high experimental mortality and frequent disfigurement, surviving subjects take pride in the strength they gain 237.

Orochimaru continues seeking unusual biological resources. He approaches Kimimaro too late, finds Jugo crucial to perfecting his Cursed Seal, and secretly studies Shiraha’s blood and meditation method. His attempts to remove Shiraha’s Mental Power aura from the blood also destroy its special energy, preventing him from gaining its benefits without the associated bloodline connection 174 175 179.

After rescuing Shion from suspected Iwagakure kidnappers, he discovers that she is Shiraha’s daughter. Although he initially considers using her in experiments, their connection to Shiraha leads him to abandon that intention 179.

Isshiki and the breakthrough to Warlock cultivation

Isshiki, revived in Shinnō’s body, approaches Orochimaru seeking a better vessel. He offers Body Regeneration and cloning technology in return for cooperation. Orochimaru accepts for the potential benefits rather than out of faith in Isshiki or his organization 237 238 240.

Over four years, Orochimaru notices inconsistencies in “Shinnō’s” behavior and concludes that another consciousness has taken his body. When Isshiki attempts to seize the newly cultivated vessel, Orochimaru attacks with Living Corpse Reincarnation and wins the ensuing struggle by devouring Isshiki’s soul 240 241.

The victory supplies extraordinary Chakra, memories, and a transformed soul. After freeing himself from Shiraha’s soul consciousness, Orochimaru successfully begins the Companion Serpent Meditation Method and advances rapidly through the apprentice ranks 241 242 245.

The enhanced Konoha Crush Plan

Orochimaru allies with Rasa and Sunagakure to attack Konoha during the joint Chūnin Exam. He demonstrates Impure World Reincarnation by summoning the First and Second Hokage and reveals that Kakashi will assist him against Hiruzen 247.

Entering Konoha disguised as an Otogakure team-leading Jōnin, Orochimaru becomes concerned when Shiraha detects his Chakra despite his enormous growth. He later absorbs Chakra from Naruto and leaves him with a Cursed Seal, but suspends his attempt to acquire Naruto’s and Sasuke’s power after sensing the attention of an immensely powerful being 249 252.

Orochimaru uses Shion to draw Shiraha into a meeting. He compensates her with Ōtsutsuki Chakra and negotiates cooperation against future Ōtsutsuki arrivals and Kaguya. Their exchange gives Shiraha access to Isshiki’s secret techniques, while Orochimaru receives blood and a Bloodline Warlock advancement method 253 254.

During the attack, Orochimaru captures Hiruzen and summons Hashirama, Tobirama, and the Third Kazekage. He severely wounds Jiraiya and battles the awakened Minato, but Might Duy’s Eight Gates assault damages his very origin and forces him to retreat. Hiruzen dies in his separate confrontation with Kakashi, rather than by Orochimaru’s hand 258 259 261.

Submission to Shiraha and the unification conflict

While Orochimaru is badly depleted, a parallel-world Isshiki using Jigen’s body arrives with Delta and attempts to recruit him into Kara. Orochimaru refuses, recognizing that surrender would endanger the Ōtsutsuki power he has acquired. Shiraha intervenes, kills Delta, and forces Isshiki to retreat 261 262.

Orochimaru then voluntarily accepts Shiraha’s purified blood and becomes his direct dependent. He moves into Uzushiogakure’s underground laboratory, shares a trace of Original Ōtsutsuki Chakra, and begins recovery and advancement with additional blood and a high-purity Gelel Stone 262 263.

After becoming a First-Level Symbiotic Serpent Warlock, he is entrusted alongside Kushina with protecting Uzushiogakure during Shiraha’s seclusion 265. He later works with Obito to capture Amado, while their organizations’ joint abductions of jinchūriki make him a major threat in the eyes of the shinobi nations 273.

During the unification conflict, Orochimaru ambushes Shiraha and publicly appears beside Obito at the Six Kage Summit. He offers Kushina cooperation against the Great Nations’ ninja; she refuses. Obito describes their arrangement as temporary and states that Orochimaru intends to divide the Divine Tree’s Chakra, fight the Ōtsutsuki, and eventually leave the planet 273 274.

Parallel-world counterpart

  • An Orochimaru in the parallel world joins Naruto, Sasuke, Kabuto, and Issei in examining Urashiki’s preserved tissue. He and Kabuto test its compatibility with Naruto’s and Sasuke’s cells before moving the research to his better-equipped laboratory 225.
  • Kabuto estimates that this Orochimaru could master the relevant technology within a few months and potentially improve it, whereas Kabuto himself would require one or two years 222.
  • He remains intensely fascinated by Ōtsutsuki biology and questions Issei after Shiraha’s preserved blood completely devours Urashiki’s tissue 225.

Appearance

  • Build: Lean face, pale skin, and a body approximately 1.70 meters tall in his weakened post-invasion state 17 262.
  • Hair: Long and black; initially described as shoulder-length and later as waist-length 17 174.
  • Eyes: Narrow eyes with golden vertical pupils, black eyeliner, and purple eyeshadow 17 168.
  • Accessories: Blue-green magatama-shaped earrings 17 174.
  • Clothing: Wears a black kimono at his first dinner appearance and an earth-yellow kimono when approaching Kabuto 17 168.
  • Later eye changes: Can manifest Byakugan and Three-Tomoe Sharingan; eventually appears with a pale-violet Rinnegan 245 274.
  • Voice: Low, hoarse, and described as magnetic 168 274.

Personality

Orochimaru’s reserve conceals selective warmth rather than an absence of attachment. His concern for Nawaki, support of Shiraha’s early research, and restraint toward Shion contrast with his ruthlessness toward outsiders. Shion repeats Shiraha’s description of him as cold outside, warm inside, cunning, and especially protective of his own people 34 61 179.

His central ambition is to live long enough to investigate the unknown and pursue eternal truth. Independence matters deeply to him: he resists becoming Shiraha’s lifelong servant, treats alliances as exchanges of benefit, and distrusts promises unsupported by immediate advantage 168 240 253.

Pride also shapes his decisions. After gaining Ōtsutsuki power, he returns to Konoha partly to display his success to people who had condemned his path. Hiruzen’s death leaves him wistful rather than clearly happy or grieving, while Might Duy’s unexpected ability to injure him forces him to reassess his confidence 261.

Abilities & Skills

Experimental research and biological modification

  • Specializes in Forbidden Technique development and experimental research; acknowledges Tsunade’s superiority in Medical Ninjutsu 57.
  • Masters cellular activation and soft-body modification, increasing his Chakra reserves and resistance to physical injury 237 245.
  • Cultivates replacement tissue and bodies using cloning, Hashirama cells, and Shin’s rejection-free transplantation traits 237 240 241.
  • Initially falls well behind Shiraha in bloodline and cellular research, despite considering himself an exceptional genius in human-body experimentation 175 179.

Living Corpse Reincarnation

  • An S-Rank Forbidden Jutsu developed from the Eight Branches Technique and Spirit Transformation Jutsu; transfers Orochimaru’s consciousness into another body 241.
  • Its original form requires a three-year interval between uses and a vessel with weaker Mental Power than the caster 241.
  • Risks soul damage, post-transfer weakness, rejection, and backlash from incompatible or mentally stronger vessels 241.
  • Later improvements allow reincarnation through his own cells and Cursed Seals, avoiding the usual struggle to seize another person’s body 241.

Cursed Seals

  • Heaven and Earth Cursed Seals grant broad enhancements comparable to Sage Mode, provided the recipient endures their painful activation 179.
  • Carry Orochimaru’s Chakra, allowing indirect influence over recipients rather than unrestricted direct control 179.
  • Preserve a route to resurrection even if his original body dies. The Heavenly Cursed Seals on Shin and Anko remain potential backups after the Konoha invasion 179 262.

Serpent techniques and regeneration

  • Hidden Shadow Snake Hands: Transforms his arm into numerous pythons; tears through Nawaki’s Wood Release obstacles and overwhelms a Root operative 142 168.
  • Eight-Headed Serpent: Uses eight heads to inject paralyzing venom and Cursed Seals while absorbing an opponent’s Chakra 241.
  • Orochimaru-Style Substitution: Recovers from otherwise fatal physical attacks through a snake-shedding-like process 245.
  • Snake senses: Gains additional sensory abilities after completing the Eight Branches Technique, although he is not originally a Sensor Ninja 175.
  • Limit: His resilience does not prevent Might Duy’s Eight Gates assault from damaging his origin 261.

Summoning and elemental ninjutsu

  • Summons the First Rashomon to defend his group against Kakuzu’s Fire Style attack 75.
  • Summons Manda, his strongest Summoning Beast at that point, to drive Kakuzu away 76.
  • Uses Earth Style defensively against Kakuzu and Wind Style against Hiruzen 76 258.
  • Identifies the masks of Kakuzu’s Earth Grudge Fear creatures as their vulnerable points during combat 76.
  • Attempts to learn Ryūchi Cave senjutsu, but damage to his soul prevents successful practice 252.

Impure World Reincarnation

  • Develops Tobirama’s incomplete resurrection technique and claims to have made it nearly flawless 247.
  • Reanimates Hashirama Senju, Tobirama Senju, and the Third Kazekage for the Konoha invasion 258 259.
  • Stronger sacrifices produce stronger reincarnations, but also intensify their resistance to his control 259.
  • Minato’s sealing techniques immobilize and remove the reincarnated Tobirama from battle 259.
  • Manipulates Danzo into an uncontrolled summoning of Kinkaku and Ginkaku as an act of revenge 153.

Companion Serpent Meditation Method

  • Uses eighteen Will runes to draw Energy Particles into his body and increase Mental Power 242.
  • Depends on suitable bloodline aptitude; Orochimaru cannot initially cultivate it without Shiraha’s blood 238.
  • After absorbing Isshiki, successfully uses its bloodline power while temporarily escaping Shiraha’s direct soul-consciousness control 241 242.
  • Later becomes a First-Level Symbiotic Serpent Warlock, though Shiraha’s higher bloodline authority remains a decisive limitation after renewed submission 263 265.

Ōtsutsuki power and dōjutsu

  • Absorbs Isshiki’s Original Chakra, soul, and memories, producing a qualitative transformation in his power 241 254.
  • Demonstrates Byakugan and Three-Tomoe Sharingan in his new body, then later manifests Rinnegan 245 274.
  • Absorbs Chakra from Naruto and increasingly favors taijutsu after inheriting Isshiki’s power 252.
  • Learns special Chakra-concealment methods, Karma information, and techniques involving soul-consciousness removal from Isshiki’s memories 249 254 261.
  • Uses spatial abilities alongside Obito and later enters the summit through a Space Gate 271 273 274.
  • His claim that his Chakra reserves rival the Eight-Tails is his own assessment, not a measured comparison 245.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Kusanagi Sword: Empty Sword — A divine weapon he draws from his mouth. Cuts apart Kakuzu’s masked creatures, although their threadlike bodies reconnect afterward 76.
  • Eight-Tails’ Horn — A laboratory resource containing Eight-Tails Chakra; Shiraha uses it to obtain perfect-quality cells 81.
  • Shiraha’s Blood — Used for soul repair, Mental Power enhancement, bloodline cultivation, and later voluntary submission to Shiraha 175 179 241 262.
  • Research scrolls — Receives Body Regeneration and cloning secrets from Isshiki, followed later by a Bloodline Warlock advancement method from Shiraha 238 254.
  • High-purity Gelel Stone — Supplied by Shiraha to accelerate recovery and support advancement 263.
  • Laboratories and nutrient tanks — Maintains underground bases outside Konoha and in the Land of Rice Fields; his transformed body requires extensive nutritional support during recovery 138 237 245.
  • Human-skin disguise — Conceals his identity in Konoha; Naruto’s Nine-Tails Chakra burns the mask before Orochimaru removes it 252.

Relationships

  • Yagami Shiraha — Former disciple, research collaborator, rival, and eventual bloodline superior. Their cooperation repeatedly alternates with distrust; using Shion as leverage crosses Shiraha’s stated boundary 61 253 262 265.
  • Sarutobi Hiruzen — Teacher and former political patron. Once considers Orochimaru his successor, but their bond collapses over human experimentation; Orochimaru later attacks Konoha partly to demonstrate the success of his rejected path 142 261.
  • Nawaki — Disciple whose lost leg helps motivate the regeneration research. Later attempts to stop Orochimaru’s escape from Konoha 34 63 142.
  • Tsunade — Longstanding friend and fellow Sannin. Shares an informal early rapport with him and remains the medical specialist he openly acknowledges as superior 17 57.
  • Jiraiya — Former close friend who tries to bring him back after his defection. Their reunion during the Chūnin Exam leads to conflict, and Orochimaru severely wounds him during the invasion 142 252 259.
  • Uchiha Chiho and Hyuga Hideto — Members of Class 12 whom he formally accepts alongside Shiraha 56 61.
  • Anko Mitarashi — Disciple accepted after becoming a Chūnin at twelve; her Heavenly Cursed Seal can serve as a resurrection anchor 138 262.
  • Danzo Shimura — Secret research partner and later target of revenge. Their dealings rest on shared interests rather than mutual trust 63 153 168.
  • Yakushi Kabuto — Recruits him with an offer to support revenge against Danzo and Konoha; later supplies intelligence for the Konoha Crush Plan 168 245.
  • Shin — Loyal experimental subject, subordinate, and later disciple. His special physique enables Orochimaru’s new vessel; Orochimaru remains concerned about his safety even while badly wounded 237 241 245 262.
