Background

Kushina is an Uzumaki Clan member from the Land of Whirlpools, where the clan founded Uzushiogakure and maintained a longstanding alliance with Konoha. She is Tsunade's cousin and was regarded as a princess of the Land of Whirlpools. 3 6

After the destruction of the Uzumaki Clan and Konoha's failure to send its main force to assist, Kushina came to Konoha as a refugee. Her position as Uzumaki Mito's granddaughter-generation relative made her the leading candidate to inherit Kurama. 12 53

Mito transferred Kurama into Kushina shortly before her death, deliberately leaving Chakra and sealing safeguards behind to protect her successor. Kushina inherited Mito's sealing legacy, including the Adamantine Sealing Chains and numerous Uzumaki sealing techniques. 21 26 36 53

Appearance

Kushina is distinguished by her vivid red hair, a feature that immediately drew attention when she transferred into the Ninja Academy. As a child, she had round cheeks and a slightly plump build; her red hair later became the basis for the insults and nickname that earned her the title “Red Hot Habanero.” 3 7 28

  • Often manifests scarlet or gold Chakra cloaks while drawing on Kurama's power. 100 101
  • Uses a fitted black Black Dragon Armor carried in a Storage Scroll when preparing for battle. 124
  • Wears a fitted orange outfit while using the Tenseigan. 265
  • Her eyes become sapphire blue and she develops orange furred ears when activating Tenseigan Chakra Mode and Nine-Tails Sage Art. 270

Personality

Kushina is outspoken, competitive, and strong-willed. Upon arriving at the Academy, she openly declared her ambition to become Konoha's first female Hokage, and she refuses to tolerate insults toward herself or the people she considers companions. 3 7

Her temper became more explosive after becoming Kurama's Jinchūriki, particularly when his Chakra interfered with her emotions. Even so, she develops from an impulsive girl who distrusts Kurama into a determined partner who listens to him, negotiates with him, and eventually fights in complete synchronization with him. 23 54 120 271

Kushina is intensely protective of the Uzumaki Clan. Her experience as a displaced survivor leaves her distrustful of Konoha's leadership, but it also motivates her to rescue scattered Uzumaki survivors, rebuild her homeland, and assume responsibility as clan head. 70 74 120 195

She can be jealous and possessive around Shiraha, yet also shows a playful, affectionate side with him and Kurama. Around Shiraha, she is notably more willing to reveal vulnerability and rely on others. 20 52 73 136 218

Abilities & Skills

Uzumaki Chakra and Vitality

Kushina possesses extraordinary Chakra reserves even by Uzumaki standards. Her Chakra was immense before becoming a Jinchūriki and rose dramatically after Kurama's transfer. 3 22

  • Her reserves allow her to create multiple Shadow Clones and sustain intensive training. 23 52
  • Her raw Chakra volume and physical condition let her fight opponents who would normally overwhelm shinobi of her technical level. 104
  • Her early Chakra control was poor because of her enormous reserves, insufficient guidance, and Kurama's interference. 34

Uzumaki Sealing Jutsu

Kushina inherited Mito's sealing arts and is especially talented with sealing techniques. She later becomes capable of using high-level Uzumaki seals in combat. 36 52 124

  • Adamantine Sealing Chains — Golden chains used to bind and suppress Kurama; Kushina later awakens and masters the ability herself. 27 197
  • Four Symbols Sealing — Used against the Third Raikage and later as part of Nagato's restraint. 124 197
  • Five Elements Sealing — Applied alongside other seals to immobilize Nagato. 197
  • She restrained Nagato with the combined use of Four Symbols Sealing, Five Elements Sealing, and Adamantine Sealing Chains. 197

Kurama's Chakra

As Kurama's Jinchūriki, Kushina can access the strongest Tailed Beast's Chakra. Their relationship changes from mutual hostility to cooperation and eventually complete synchronization. 27 54 120 271

  • Kurama can provide Chakra directly to enhance her speed, strength, durability, and recovery. 54 104
  • Early exposure to his Chakra intensified her anger and desire for revenge, causing a temporary loss of control. 54
  • Her seal initially restricted how much Chakra Kurama could transmit; Mito gradually reduced those restraints as Kushina matured. 53 111 197
  • Kushina and Kurama can overwhelm Chakra-absorption techniques by flooding the target with unrefined Nine-Tails Chakra. 197

Nine-Tails Chakra Mode

Kushina's golden Nine-Tails Chakra Mode is based on Mito's secret technique and later becomes a cooperative form powered by Kurama. 101 120

  • Greatly enhances her physical strength, speed, and defense. 101
  • Allows high-speed movement comparable to space-time ninjutsu in Nagato's assessment. 196
  • Enabled her to form a Tailed Beast Ball powerful enough to destroy Root's hideout. 100
  • Its initial use caused physical exhaustion because her body had not fully adapted to Kurama's Chakra. 101

Knight Breathing Technique and Crimson Dragon Techniques

Kushina learned Shiraha's Knight Breathing Technique and adapted it to her immense Chakra and physique. 28 104

  • Knight Breathing Technique — Enhances Chakra control and physical output; her power during training nearly harmed Shiraha. 28
  • Crimson Dragon Calamity — A violent Chakra-enhancement technique that dramatically raises her destructive taijutsu power. 104 196
  • Crimson Dragon Armor — A crimson Chakra armor that layers with Kurama's Chakra cloak for additional protection and striking power. 104 108
  • While using these techniques, Kushina destroyed two of Kakuzu's hearts and endured his combined Fire and Wind Release assault. 104

Tenseigan and Nine-Tails Sage Art

After awakening the Tenseigan, Kushina reaches the highest level of her combat power through its combination with Kurama and senjutsu. 264 270

  • Can fly while surrounded by pale blue Chakra. 265
  • Controls two Truth-Seeking Orbs and can merge one with Chakra to create a massive golden Chakra sword. 265
  • Uses Silver Wheel Reincarnation Explosion, generating a giant tornado empowered by the Tenseigan and Truth-Seeking Orbs. 271
  • In Tenseigan Chakra Mode and Nine-Tails Sage Art, her physical toughness is comparable to Yin-Yang Release Black Rods. 271
  • Even at this level, Isshiki could initially suppress her in direct taijutsu; she adapted by switching to a battle of attrition. 271

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Black hair ribbon — A birthday gift from Shiraha after Kushina shared the tragedy of her family's past. 20
  • Uzumaki sealing and ninjutsu scrolls — A collection inherited from her clan and stored in a hidden underground room. 36
  • Storage Scroll — Used to carry her Black Dragon Armor. 124
  • Black Dragon Armor — Land of Snow armor worn as a precaution in battle, though its enhancement is limited compared with her own power. 124

Relationships

  • Yagami Shiraha — Her closest companion, husband, and the father of her twins. He defended her from bullies, helped her reconcile with Kurama, and supported her demand to rebuild the Uzumaki Clan. 7 27 120 219
  • Kurama — Her sealed Tailed Beast and eventual combat partner. Their relationship develops from hostility and manipulation into mutual trust and complete cooperation. 27 54 120 271
  • Uzumaki Mito — Her grandmother and predecessor as Kurama's Jinchūriki. Mito left behind Chakra, consciousness fragments, and sealing protections to guide Kushina's growth. 53 111
  • Sarutobi Hiruzen — Konoha's Third Hokage. He monitored Kushina and initially treated her as a strategic asset, leading to a deep rift after her kidnapping; he later accepted her terms for leaving Konoha. 12 69 120
  • Minato Namikaze — Academy peer who rescued her from Kumogakure after tracking the hair she left behind. Kushina initially considered him a “sissy,” but later thanked him. 3 69 70
  • Tsunade — Her cousin and a connection to the Senju-Uzumaki family. 6
  • Sora and Naomi — Uzumaki siblings rescued by Kushina from mistreatment in Kusagakure; she takes responsibility for their safety and resettlement. 74
  • Uchiha Chiho — Initially a romantic rival for Shiraha's attention, later a close political ally who addresses Kushina as her sister after the Uchiha Clan joins the Land of Whirlpools. 73 216
  • Taichi and Hikari — Her twin children with Shiraha; both received sealed portions of Kurama's refined Chakra. 219 250
  • Nagato — An Uzumaki descendant who attacked her clan grounds while seeking to force cooperation with Akatsuki. Kushina defeated and sealed him rather than killing him. 196 197

Story Role / Major Arcs

Transfer Student and Academy Years

Kushina transfers into Shiraha's Academy class, drawing attention with her red hair and declaration that she will become the first female Hokage. Bullied for her appearance, she is defended by Shiraha, beginning their close bond. 3 7

Mito's Successor

Following Mito's death, Kushina becomes the new Nine-Tails Jinchūriki. Konoha conceals the transfer and monitors her closely, while Kushina struggles with Kurama's interference and the fear that her secret will cost her Shiraha's friendship. 21 22 24 26

Reconciliation with Kurama

With Shiraha's encouragement, Kushina begins treating Kurama as an intelligent being rather than a monster. Mito reluctantly loosens the seal to allow limited cooperation, but Kurama's Chakra drives Kushina into a revenge-fueled loss of control before she regains herself. 27 53 54

Kidnapping and Break with Konoha

Kumogakure envoys abduct Kushina from within Konoha. She draws on Kurama's Chakra to resist, while Minato tracks and reaches her using a strand of her hair. Uzumaki Survivors and Konoha's War Asset

After joining Orochimaru's team, Kushina rescues Uzumaki siblings Sora and Naomi from Kusagakure. Her growing power makes her a central Konoha deterrent, and she repeatedly drives back the Third Raikage while holding back to avoid provoking a larger war. 73 74 124

Departure and Rebuilding the Uzumaki Clan

Kushina agrees to aid Konoha against Kumogakure only if it allows her and Shiraha to leave afterward and rebuild the Uzumaki Clan. With Kurama publicly supporting her choice, Hiruzen accepts the conditions and recognizes their future alliance. 120

Clan Head of Uzushiogakure

Kushina becomes the public leader of the rebuilt Uzumaki Clan, handles its government affairs, protects its territory, and helps welcome the Uchiha defectors into the Land of Whirlpools. 195 216

Battle with Nagato

She defeats him by allowing Kurama's overwhelming Chakra to flood his absorption ability, then seals him with multiple Uzumaki techniques. 196 197

Ōtsutsuki Conflict and Empire

Kushina awakens the Tenseigan, reaches Six Paths-level power, and fights Isshiki using Tenseigan Chakra Mode and Nine-Tails Sage Art. After the world survives the conflict with Orochimaru and Madara, she becomes the first King of the Serpent Spirit Empire formed from the united Great Ninja Villages. 265 271 277
