Background
Shuma is a youth of the Kumat tribe from Bear Paw Island. Under Kumat custom, anyone whose cooking has not been acknowledged by the Bear Spirit is still considered a minor, regardless of age. Shuma sought that acknowledgment so he could gain the freedom to leave the island and choose his own path. 20 21
Buggy encountered Shuma while stranded on the uncharted island and offered to help him satisfy the Bear Spirit in return for joining the Buggy Pirates. Shuma accepted immediately, largely because he wanted both recognition for his cooking and a chance to see the outside world. 20
Shuma’s first attempt to feed the Bear Spirit failed because his dish was overwhelmingly spicy. Mohji realized that the bear preferred sweet bamboo; the actual Bear Spirit was a cub, rather than the giant grizzly that had pursued the group. 24 26 Afterward, Shuma departed Bear Paw Island with Buggy’s crew, stealing ingredients from his tribe and misinterpreting their armed pursuit as an emotional send-off. 28
Aboard the Big Top, Shuma became the crew’s cook and a frontline ranged fighter. His early lack of social knowledge required Buggy to repeatedly explain basic concepts such as ships, names, friendship, and comradeship. 20 29 He later trained with the crew on Gravity Island, developing Six Powers mobility and becoming an increasingly capable combatant. 30 32
Appearance
Shuma is a youthful Kumat tribesman whose clothing and accessories reflect his upbringing close to nature.
- Usually wears animal hide around his lower body and leaves his chest bare. 87
- Wears a leaf necklace. 87 143
- Has tribal bear-paw patterns on his body. 20
- Often rubs beneath his nose with a finger before smiling brightly. 20 29
- Carries the distinctive Raptor Boomerang. 29
Personality
Shuma is cheerful, impulsive, and extraordinarily simple-minded. Having grown up in isolation, he initially does not recognize basic social conventions: he mistakes the Big Top for a sea beast, struggles with people’s names, and assumes “comrades” are a type of animal. 20 21 29
His simplicity is paired with genuine loyalty. He defends Buggy and Mohji when the Kumat tribe regards them as food, refuses to abandon allies, and becomes openly furious upon learning Kaya was kidnapped. 22 25 102 Buggy describes his unusual purity and lack of complicated thoughts as the reason the Seven-Colored Crown cannot control him. 230
Shuma is intensely passionate about food, especially spicy cooking. He sees culinary preparation as a serious craft, but his tastes are often extreme; even a tiny amount of his Destruction Pepper is unbearable for others. 21 30 His combat instincts are far sharper than his everyday judgment, allowing him to rapidly assess opponents and adjust his fighting style during battle. 194 199
Abilities & Skills
Culinary Skill
Shuma is an exceptional cook whose dishes can rally an entire pirate crew.
- His wild boar stew earns Buggy’s strong approval and brings him to tears. 20
- His spicy soup is painful to consume but addictive and leaves drinkers feeling warm afterward. 21
- His cooking improves morale and turns a gloomy crew gathering into a lively beach banquet. 21
- He trained under Zeff at the Baratie and matured as a chef before choosing to continue sailing with Buggy. 73
- His signature ingredient is Destruction Pepper, an extremely potent local pepper. 30
Raptor Boomerang
Shuma wields the Raptor Boomerang, a bladed returning weapon used for hunting, sniping, wind manipulation, and close combat.
- Hunts seabirds from extreme range and catches the returning weapon with precision. 29
- Requires exceptional eyesight, finger strength, and hand coordination to use effectively. 46
- Can cut through brickwork and return after striking or missing a target. 108
- Produces large rotating wind slashes, including Raptor: Giant Sphere, capable of threatening multiple Seven-Plume imperial guards at once. 293 303
- Can create a wind barrier to deflect incoming projectiles. 113
Six Powers
Shuma trained in the Six Powers under Buggy’s leadership and guidance.
- Shave — Uses explosive footwork for rapid changes in position; his Reverse Shave is used to disengage from enemies. 31 108 113
- Moonwalk / Geppo — Steps through the air for aerial movement, pursuit, evasive maneuvers, and firing angles. 32 36 194
- Continuous aerial use consumes substantial stamina, forcing him to return to rooftops or the ground during prolonged fights. 113
Mantra
Shuma demonstrates natural talent for Mantra, the ability later used by him and Mohji to avoid being caught unaware by Marine pursuit.
- Nears an initial grasp of Mantra after only seven days of training. 211
- Can evade eight or nine out of every ten swings from his instructor during training. 211
- His Mantra is not yet precise enough to locate any individual reliably in a dense crowd. 226
Destruction Pepper Enhancement
Shuma can consume Destruction Peppers himself to temporarily push his physical abilities beyond normal limits.
- Greatly increases his speed and strength. 197
- Lets him fight Urouge directly at close range despite normally favoring ranged attacks. 197 199
- Does not remove the danger posed by opponents with superior durability or counterattacking abilities. 199
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Raptor Boomerang — Shuma’s primary bladed throwing weapon. 29
- Destruction Peppers — Potent peppers used in his cooking and as a temporary combat stimulant. 30 197
- Cooking utensils and large pot — Equipment he carried from Bear Paw Island. 23 29
Relationships
- Buggy — Captain and recruiter. Buggy recognizes Shuma’s potential, teaches him the meaning of comradeship, and repeatedly trusts him with combat assignments. 20 29 163
- Mohji — Crewmate and frequent target of Shuma’s naming mistakes. Mohji helps identify the Bear Spirit’s preference for sweet bamboo, while Shuma protects him during the grizzly pursuit. 21 25 26
- Cabaji — Crewmate and training rival. Cabaji is initially doubtful of Shuma, but they train together and later fight alongside the crew. 28 31
- Mikuru — Crewmate and traveling companion. They search for their scattered allies together on the sky islands; Shuma’s reverence for bears transfers into excessive affection for her because he cannot distinguish cats from bears. 98 175 176
- Kaya — Crewmate whom Shuma pursues Benson to rescue after learning the One-Eye Family kidnapped her. 102 108
- Zeff — Mentor at the Baratie. Zeff offers Shuma a place to stay, but Shuma chooses to continue his journey with Buggy. 73
- Benson — One-Eye Family opponent. Benson’s Observation Haki initially predicts Shuma’s throws, but Shuma defeats him with wind-based boomerang techniques. 108 113
- Urouge — Sky Fighting Arena opponent. Shuma accepts his challenge, studies his defensive counterattack ability, and ultimately defeats him. 194 199
