Background / History

Konoha career and human experimentation

Orochimaru studied under Hiruzen Sarutobi alongside Jiraiya and Tsunade. His earlier friendship with Hiruko weakened after graduation as the gap between their abilities widened. By the time he meets Mirai, his reputation from the Second Shinobi World War and subsequent service has earned him considerable support as a prospective Hokage 43 286.

He also served in Root under Danzō Shimura. His position as the Hokage's disciple exempted him from Root's Tongue-Cutting Curse Seal. Under Danzō's orders, he began human experimentation, progressing from cell cultivation to transplantation. Subjects expanded from death-row prisoners and spies to orphans, civilians, and shinobi, while research broadened from Wood Release to other bloodline abilities and secret techniques 132.

Alliance with Uchiha Mirai

As overall commander on the Kumogakure front, Orochimaru initially takes an interest in Mirai's body and abilities. After investigating the enemy's unexpectedly heavy casualties, he confronts Mirai and tests him with lethal snake techniques. Mirai defeats him using Flying Thunder God, Rasengan, and Chidori; Orochimaru survives by shedding replacement bodies twice 41 42.

Mirai offers him unrestricted research resources in exchange for serving him once he controls Konoha. Orochimaru initially dismisses that ambition, but Mirai's warning that Danzō and Hiruzen will sabotage his Hokage candidacy unsettles him. Their battlefield cooperation becomes more equal, and Orochimaru prevents Killer B from attacking Mirai after A's defeat 43 46.

Hiruzen's refusal to let him exploit Kumogakure's retreat deepens his distrust. He eventually accepts Mirai's proposal conditionally and reveals that he has implanted Danzō with both Hashirama's cells and Sharingan, describing the disclosure as securing a fallback for himself 46 64.

Defection and enforced loyalty

Danzō spreads reports of Orochimaru's human experiments to destroy his political prospects. Hiruzen then confronts him in his underground laboratory and attacks him. Orochimaru escapes by detonating prearranged explosive tags; he has already relocated his experimental materials. Hiruzen publicly confirms his crimes, and Konoha brands him an S-rank missing-nin 78.

His cooperation with Mirai continues after his flight. Initially, he describes their relationship as mutual exploitation and still considers targeting Mirai's coveted abilities. By the time he operates on Yakumo Kurama, however, Mirai has placed him under Kotoamatsukami, eliminating the possibility of betrayal 96 99.

Orochimaru hides in a remote cave while evading Jiraiya's pursuit. Despite that inconvenience, he refuses Mirai's offer to kill Jiraiya. He maintains loyal subordinates and introduces Mirai to several talented children, including Kimimaro, Kidomaru, Tayuya, and Jirobo 123 124.

The Leaf Collapse Plan

Orochimaru helps Mirai prepare a public attack designed to destroy Hiruzen's reputation during the Chunin Exams. To approach Hiruzen, he accompanies Mirai to kill Rasa. After Mirai finishes the Kazekage, Orochimaru removes Rasa's facial skin, alters his own body, and impersonates him successfully 123 127 128 129.

At the exams, he reveals himself inside a barrier and announces Hiruzen's “Ten Sins.” He reanimates Hashirama and Tobirama as witnesses, then exposes Root's human experimentation and Hiruzen's alleged involvement in Sakumo Hatake's downfall, clan suppression, and other abuses. His testimony turns the assembled Konoha shinobi against his former teacher 131 132 133 134.

Mirai subsequently pardons him for helping eliminate Hiruzen as a threat to the village, though Orochimaru initially remains barred from appearing publicly 141.

Research under the Divine Nation

Under Mirai, Orochimaru's work expands into a large modernization program covering genetics, cloning, medicine, transportation, computing, and scientific ninja equipment. Its growing workload exhausts him enough that he complains he can no longer enjoy discovering secrets 228 271.

His chakra-storage breakthrough makes portable reserves possible and helps enable Mirai's plan to produce Six Paths-level fighters. Later, he takes Amado Sanzu as his assistant, gains access to Shibai Ōtsutsuki's cells, and receives a second Ten-Tails for study 300 301 327 331.

After a further decade of preparation, he appears among the forces preparing for the expedition against the Ōtsutsuki homeland, resuming his quarrels with Jiraiya 335.

Appearance

  • Skin: Unnaturally pale, described as sickly under moonlight 41 42.
  • Eyes: Eerie vertical pupils 42 228.
  • Tongue: Unusually long; frequently used to lick his lips, cheeks, or face 43 96 123.
  • Clothing: Wears a white kimono when visiting Mirai's courtyard 77.
  • Variable body: Can alter his shape through soft-body modifications and is confirmed to occupy a female host 123 129.

Personality

Orochimaru is intensely curious, calculating, and willing to endanger others to test an interesting ability. His first confrontation with Mirai escalates into potentially fatal attacks, while his later assessment of their alliance leaves room for patiently exploiting Mirai's weaknesses 42 96.

He treats exceptional bodies and bloodline abilities as research material. This detachment appears in his handling of Kimimaro, his suggestion that Yakumo be surrendered for experimentation if surgery fails, and his excitement over Shin's rejection-free cells. He explicitly argues that abandoning human emotions allows more accurate judgments, linking that attitude to witnessing students, comrades, and subordinates die 99 124 199 257.

His loyalty to Mirai is not purely voluntary: Kotoamatsukami enforces it. Nevertheless, he repeatedly expresses genuine admiration for Mirai's intellect and research understanding, while also becoming weary of the relentless assignments imposed on him 99 123 228 287 300.

His colder behavior coexists with lingering attachments and a dry sense of humor. He declines to have Jiraiya killed, enjoys Mirai's snake soup, and later takes the initiative in mocking his former teammate 77 123 251 335.

  • Anticipates danger by moving laboratory materials and preparing explosives before Hiruzen's attack 78.

Research & Scientific Achievements

Field Achievement or Project Status / Limitation
Hashirama-cell transplantation Implants Danzō with Hashirama's cells and Sharingan; later resolves host consumption at the genetic level 64 228. Earlier procedures are highly sensitive to the patient's physique and cultivation-medium ratio 99.
Bloodline Disease treatment Develops a cure that fully restores Kimimaro's health 228. Confirmed successful treatment.
Mangekyō Sharingan cloning Establishes a proficient cloning process 228. Transplant recipients do not automatically awaken the Power of All Things 251.
Shin cloning Uses Shin's rejection-free cells and assistance to produce successful clones 257 271. Initial mass-production estimate is 3,000 clones per month; improved technology later reaches 20,000 per month 271 335.
Gene modification Can grant various Kekkei Genkai without the side effects associated with Hiruko's Ghost Fang Technique 286. Presented as making Hiruko's method obsolete.
Chakra storage Discovers a storage material through research into Hotaru's Nohara Ten technique 300. Enables portable chakra replenishment; reserves and advancement requirements still require surveying and testing 300.
