Background / History

Zhou Hongling was a Zhou Family military commander stationed at Ice Plain Fortress. In her third year of service, her evaluations had trailed those of the other major frontier fortresses until Lu Yuan's victories over the Iron Sparrowhawks improved her standing. She sought a decisive victory over the Manyan Tribe's elite scouts to secure promotion and command over the three fortress cities. 34

She investigated Lu Yuan's concealed background shortly after his arrival at the frontier. Learning that he had left the Zhang Clan of Yun Province and adopted the name Lu Yuan, she accepted him into the Zhou Family on the condition that he permanently sever ties with the Zhang Clan. She promised that the family would protect him from Yun Province's general. 14

Following Lu Yuan's destruction of the Silver-Armed Iron Sparrowhawks, Hong Cheng appointed her Guardian General of the Three Cities. Her formal appointment named her General of Three Towns, a Subordinate Fifth Rank post, making her one of the Northern Frontier's influential commanders. 47 50 54
