After a brief conversation, six or seven children were brought out from inside. They were all more or less infected with the Originium infection and unsuitable for living with ordinary people, so they were prepared to be sent for treatment.
Kanna spotted a familiar figure in the crowd and couldn't help but let out an "Oh."
It was a very young-looking Feline.
She was currently fast asleep.
However, judging from her tightly furrowed brow and thin body, it was clear that her current condition was very poor.
When they saw her being carried out, the other children beside her showed looks of fear, as if they had seen a monster.
"It's Rosemary," Kanna mused inwardly.
Regarding Rosemary, she only knew that the character was incredibly powerful in the story, a special talent who became an elite Operator of Rhodes Island at a young age, extremely skilled in assault, positional, and annihilation warfare.
Kanna hadn't expected that coming to Columbia this time was to pick her up.
After handing Rosemary and the children over to Rhodes Island, the other party breathed a sigh of relief.
Before leaving, they warned that many people in Columbia coveted Rosemary's body and that if they didn't want to come into contact with those with ill intentions, it would be best to leave Columbia as soon as possible.
"Can I go to that sister's place!" Although Rosemary had safely returned to Rhodes Island in the game, what if something abnormal happened in reality? Moreover, Rosemary's Originium Arts in the story were terrifying. If she was too far away, Kanna worried that if the other party lost control and erupted, she wouldn't be able to safely control her in time. So, pointing at the vehicle Rosemary was in, she asked.
Outcast mistook it as Kanna's curiosity being piqued by seeing someone her own age. Since surgery couldn't be performed in the convoy anyway, even if the little girl had a problem, they would have to hold out until they reached Rhodes Island. Thus, Outcast nodded, agreeing to Kanna's request.
Chapter 41, Chapter Thirty-Seven: Rhodes Island's Scratching Sniper and Thrower Appears
Seeing Kanna enter, Touch nodded at her, then raised a finger to her lips and made a shushing gesture.
Kanna quietly walked over and sat down, watching "Rosemary" (she didn't have that name yet) lying in Touch's arms, her face contorted in pain.
Although she wanted to help, Kanna unfortunately lacked the relevant skills and knowledge. Seeing the suffering Feline, she could only sit there helplessly.
When the convoy began to drive back, she saw the Feline's eyelids twitch, her breathing becoming heavy, and she gradually began to wake up.
The Feline, who had just woken up, was extremely panicked. She found herself in another unfamiliar vehicle, with various medical instruments inside. Suddenly, a surge of anger ignited in her mind; she wanted to destroy all the medical equipment before her.
As her thoughts took shape, a strange "entity" appeared in the carriage, beginning to distort the surrounding environment.
Sensing something was wrong, Kanna kicked open the car door and then, hugging the Feline, leaped out of the vehicle.
As the two of them left, the distorted situation inside the car eased.
The condition of the medical vehicle was quickly discovered by others in the convoy. The convoy immediately stopped, and Outcast, along with their team, surrounded Kanna and the Feline.
Feeling the immense "distortion" emanating from beside her, Kanna gently shook her head. If it were an ordinary person, they would probably have been crushed into meat paste by now.
She really didn't know how Rhodes Island managed to bring her back to the ship safely in the game.
"Don't come any closer... she's mentally unstable. You coming closer will only agitate her," Kanna shouted to the approaching Operators.
Hearing Kanna's words, everyone immediately stopped in their tracks.
At this moment, Touch got out of the car with a look of lingering fear.
"What happened?" Outcast asked, confused by the panicked expressions of everyone emerging from the medical vehicle.
"Hah! You see for yourself! I knew Kal'tsit wouldn't have sent me along for nothing. This little Feline is indeed trouble." Taking a deep breath and calming herself, Touch looked at Kanna and the Feline not far away and said.
Outcast walked to the car door and looked inside. Nearly 80% of the medical equipment in the car was damaged; it was either torn to shreds or twisted into a mess.
After seeing the condition inside the car, Outcast couldn't help but be shocked.
Meanwhile, after Kanna brought the Feline out of the car, she hugged her and gently patted her seemingly delicate shoulders.
"Don't be scared, don't be scared. You're safe now, no one will hurt you anymore. Good, learn with me, take a deep breath. Come on, breathe~ in~ breathe~ out~ breathe~ in~ breathe~ out..."
With Kanna's comfort, the Feline gradually let go of her fear. She leaned nervously against Kanna, looking at the Operators around her. She squeezed Kanna's shoulder, and when she saw Touch approaching to check on them, she trembled slightly again.
Touch also noticed something was wrong from the Feline's eyes and stopped in the distance with a puzzled expression. I've never seen this little one before, why is she afraid of me?
Kanna stroked the Feline's ear and then pulled her closer, preventing her from seeing Touch.
At this moment, Outcast walked over. When she was about five meters away from Kanna and the Feline, Kanna raised her hand to stop her.
"Don't come any closer yet. Her abilities are strange and very powerful. I'm not confident I can safely get you away if she loses control."
Hearing Kanna's words, Outcast stopped. She noticed that the ground where Kanna and the Feline were standing had sunk several centimeters. Even though Kanna appeared perfectly fine, her tightly fitting clothes indicated that she was under immense pressure.
"Do you know what's going on?" Outcast asked, pointing at Touch and then at the Feline in Kanna's arms.
Seeing that the Feline had calmed down and the pressure on her body had gradually lessened, Kanna finally spoke.
"I suspect she's not afraid of Auntie Touch, but rather of her clothes, or perhaps a certain symbol."
Although Kanna remembered some of "Rosemary's" settings, she couldn't say them directly because she couldn't explain how she knew. She could only remind the others in a speculative tone.
After hearing Kanna's words, Touch looked down at herself. She was wearing standard Rhodes Island combat attire, similar to Outcast's, with no special markings... except...
She suddenly thought of something, and her expression turned extremely grim.
Then she began to curse, "Don't let me find out what those guys did, or I won't be able to resist going over and shoving them all into a cesspool to drown."
While cursing, Touch raised her right hand to her left shoulder and tore off the red cross armband representing the medical team.
Sure enough, after Touch threw away the armband and slowly approached, she no longer provoked the Feline's fear. This caused Touch's already grim expression to be tinged with sadness and pain.
What kind of trauma could make a little girl harbor such deep resentment towards medical personnel? This made her, as a fellow healer, feel ashamed.
After about half an hour, Kanna finally gestured for them to come over. When they did, they saw that the child had fallen unconscious again due to weakness and excessive use of Originium Arts.
Now that they knew the other party's taboo, they proceeded to remove everything related to medical treatment from the ambulance, and blocked off anything that couldn't be removed before sending the child back into the vehicle.
Even after learning that Kanna was unaffected by the other party's Originium Arts, Outcast still kept Kanna by Feline's side. This way, if any problems arose again, Kanna could at least serve as a layer of insurance.
After a series of setbacks, the convoy resumed its journey back.
Not long after they started, Kanna's ears twitched, and she looked back through the window.
"What's wrong?" After the life-saving grace from before, Touch no longer treated Kanna as just a child. Upon noticing her unusual behavior, Touch asked.
"Someone's following us. Three SUVs and seven motorcycles, and they're all armed." Despite the limited visibility inside the vehicle, Kanna accurately spotted the unidentified individuals approaching the convoy from several kilometers behind.
Upon hearing Kanna's words, Touch immediately contacted Outcast.
The convoy then drove to a canyon. As the convoy entered the canyon, several Operators suddenly jumped out of the vehicles.
After disembarking, these Operators quickly hid themselves in the forests on both sides of the canyon.
Chapter 42: The True Strength of an Elite Medical Operator
After passing through the valley, the convoy stopped at the exit on the other side.
Outcast, along with the remaining Operators, emerged from the vehicles. While listening to the reports from the Operators who had left earlier, she contemplated how to set up a defensive line.
Just as Kanna had said, a hostile convoy was following them. They were all armed and heading straight for their location. It was obvious to anyone what their intentions were.
At that moment, the approaching convoy was quite excited. Their mission was to intercept a convoy from a pharmaceutical company and bring back a target individual.
When they received this mission, the group was overjoyed. The employer had offered a generous reward, with the only condition being that the target should be kept alive if possible.
Everyone thought, "Isn't this just free money?" After all, how strong could the security of a pharmaceutical company's convoy be? Their own group consisted of mercenaries who constantly operated on various battlefields, and they even had a few Sarkaz among them. They figured that once they surrounded the convoy, the other side would be too scared to even fight back.
On the other side of the valley, Touch silently got out of the car and walked over to Outcast, patting her shoulder.
Then, Touch tightened her grip on her staff and began walking back the way they came.
Seeing her actions, everyone was stunned. For Touch, a medical Operator, to cross the defensive line alone and walk back seemed no different from walking to her death.
"You're a doctor now, you don't need to do this!"
Touch raised her hand and waved it. "Precisely because I'm a doctor, I must do this."
As her words fell, Touch disappeared into the valley.
"Captain, do you need us to follow her?" the Operators nearby asked Outcast, the backbone of their team.
Outcast glanced at her tense subordinates and shook her head.
"Follow? To do what? Get ourselves killed? Just wait here obediently!" Unlike these newly recruited Rhodes Island Operators, Outcast knew Touch's strength. No Sarkaz who could survive for months fighting on the front lines of the bloody Sarkaz civil war in Kazdel was ordinary. And Touch was precisely one of them.
Outcast picked up her communicator. "Reconnaissance team, pay attention. Under no circumstances are any of you to approach the canyon floor from now on. After you're done, be sure to return along the ridge. Remember, do not go down into the canyon."
Upon hearing the captain's orders, everyone, whether they were preparing to block the enemy in the valley or scouting ahead, was a bit bewildered. The order was too strange.
"Don't find it strange. If you had witnessed Touch's true strength, you would understand. I'm doing this for your own good."
After saying this, she stopped making arrangements for the defensive line and walked to the side, leaning against a tree with her eyes closed, feigning sleep.
Seeing their captain's sudden abnormal behavior, the subordinates below were somewhat at a loss. Finally, they instinctively set up a simple defensive measure and nervously watched in the direction of the canyon.
Kanna, holding Feline's hand, walked over to Outcast.
"Grandma, do you have any candy?"
Seeing Kanna, Outcast managed a rare smile. "Of course. Here, have two pieces." She took two hard candies from her pocket and offered them to Kanna.
Kanna took the candies, unwrapped them, and then put one into Feline's mouth.
Looking at the candy Kanna offered, Feline flinched in fear at first. When she realized there was no problem, she cautiously stuck out her tongue and licked it.
"It's so sweet!"
Feline couldn't help but exclaim, tasting the sweetness on her tongue.
"Of course. Rhodes Island's candy-making technology is top-notch, and we also have a sister who's excellent at making desserts. When we get back, I'll take you to eat desserts. Those are what you call 'sweetness that lingers for three days, with an unending aftertaste.'"
Kanna patted her chest, looking quite proud.
Perhaps it was Kanna's age and appearance that finally made her let down her guard. As she carefully licked the candy from Kanna's hand, tears streamed down her face uncontrollably.
Kanna hurriedly reached out to wipe away her tears. "Hey, don't cry! Tears are bitter, and they'll make the candy taste bad."
"Okay! I promise I won't cry anymore!" The girl's tear-streaked smile looked exceptionally poignant.
Just as Feline was eating the candy, Kanna's ears twitched again. Seeing that Feline had almost finished the candy, she took her hand again and led her back to the vehicle.
Shortly after Kanna and Feline got back in the car, Touch returned from the canyon entrance. Just as they were wondering where the enemy was, several members of the reconnaissance team jumped down from the ridge with pale faces.
Upon seeing Touch, they involuntarily took a step back.
"What happened? Where are the enemies?" a confused team member asked the reconnaissance squad.
When they heard the question, the faces of the reconnaissance squad members changed drastically. They leaned against the wall and began to vomit violently.
Their disheveled appearance startled the others, who couldn't help but look up in the direction of Touch, who had silently returned to the car and closed the door.
Outcast opened her eyes and looked at their pathetic state without surprise. She clapped her hands, drawing everyone's attention back to her.
"Now that the enemies are dealt with, everyone get in the vehicle immediately. We're leaving."
Inside the vehicle, after the reconnaissance team members had recovered from their shock, they recalled the recent battle with fearful eyes. It was less a battle and more a massacre.
The enemy convoy came into view not long after they had left. At the time, they were still marveling at how Touch had managed to get ahead of them, standing in the middle of the canyon road.
Seeing Touch, the enemy didn't stop. Instead, they accelerated, charging towards her.
Then, the reconnaissance team members witnessed a nightmare they would likely never forget: as Touch stomped her staff on the ground, everything around her, except the stones, began to dissolve.
The charging vehicles were the first to be hit. Before their eyes, the entire vehicle melted like a piece of rubber in a fire, rapidly turning into an unidentifiable substance.
The people inside instantly transformed from whole beings into puddles of bodily fluids, which then quickly dried up.
As members of the reconnaissance team, their eyesight was excellent, so they clearly and completely witnessed the complete dissolution of a person, from the outside in.
Some of the enemy "strong individuals" even attempted to resist the dissolution with Originium Arts. The result was that the dissolution slowed considerably, but it also became more painful and terrifying.
After there were no living creatures left in the canyon, Touch didn't linger. She simply turned and headed back towards her own convoy. The reconnaissance team, still in a state of fear and unease, finally reacted and followed her back to the group from a distance.
Chapter 43: Chapter Thirty-Nine - Rhodes Island! Your Cub is Home!
About an hour after Kanna and her group had left, another new convoy approached.
Judging by their equipment and attire, the people who wanted to capture "Rosemary" had hired more than one mercenary group.
As they reached the canyon entrance, the leader sitting at the front suddenly waved, signaling the convoy to stop.
He got out of the vehicle and walked to the middle of the road. He sniffed the air, then beckoned to a subordinate, "Go catch an Originium slug from the road we came on."
"Boss? What do you need that thing for?"
"Just go! Everyone else, get out and rest." Hearing his subordinate's question, the leader turned and cursed before looking at the strange puddle of liquid ahead, his expression becoming uncertain.
