Background / History

Madara was a legendary Uchiha figure from the Warring States era and one of the only recent shinobi described as having reached Super Kage Level alongside Hashirama Senju. His growth was associated with the Mangekyo Sharingan, Eternal Mangekyo Sharingan, and control of the Nine-Tails, though Hashirama consistently held the advantage over him. 376

During an earlier conflict with Hashirama, Madara used Sharingan genjutsu to control the Nine-Tails, armored it in Susanoo, and sent it against Hashirama's Wood Release Buddha. 79 He later acquired Hashirama cells, granting him a powerful but transplanted form of Wood Release. 385

After Hashirama's death, Madara lost interest in Konoha itself, focusing instead on arrangements for his own resurrection. He transplanted his Rinnegan into the young Nagato Uzumaki and cultivated Nagato as a future means of restoring him. 92 325 328

Appearance

In old age, Madara has white or graying hair, a hunched frame, deeply wrinkled skin, and relies on a long-handled scythe. His frail appearance contrasts sharply with his immense chakra and battlefield presence. 87 275 349

  • White, unruly hair and a visibly aged face. 87 275
  • Often stands atop Wood Release constructs rather than moving on foot; his leg mobility is impaired. 275 280
  • Wields a long-handled scythe and the Uchiha Gunbai. 87 349 385
  • Uses a blue Susanoo in forms ranging from skeletal to Complete Body Susanoo. 426

Personality

Madara is contemptuous, theatrical, and merciless toward opponents he considers weak. He routinely insults Konoha, its leadership, and even fellow Uchiha who continue serving the village, using personal grievances and clan history as psychological weapons. 327 328 385

His contempt does not prevent him from recognizing strength. Hashirama remains the standard by which he judges others, and Madara acknowledges Kagami Uchiha as a “true ninja” after Kagami forces him to expend Izanam. 385 He is also willing to cultivate talented Uchiha through tragedy, believing that a fundamentally kind person can achieve extreme power once driven into despair. 303 387

Abilities & Skills

Sharingan and Genjutsu

Madara's Sharingan grants him exceptional perception, predictive ability, and genjutsu prowess.

  • Immobilizes an entire Anbu squad with Illusion Arts: Binding. 87
  • Controls Konoha shinobi through illusion and turns them against other Konoha forces. 87 98
  • Uses genjutsu to repeatedly force Uchiha Goka to witness Uchiha Michi's death. 329
  • Reads and counters Uchiha ninjutsu with a Three-Tomoe Sharingan, rendering Fire Release and wire-based shuriken attacks ineffective. 329

Rinnegan

Madara possessed the Rinnegan before placing it in Nagato.

  • Uses the Rinnegan while confronting Yagami and the Konoha shinobi during Nagato's early life. 87
  • Entrusts the eyes to Nagato as part of a long-term resurrection plan. 92
  • Reclaims the Rinnegan after Nagato uses Samsara of Heavenly Life to resurrect him. 518

Wood Release

Madara's Hashirama-cell-derived Wood Release is his preferred combat style and his principal weapon against large forces.

  • Wood Release: Deep Forest Emergence — Raises dense forests of crushing trunks that can overwhelm multiple squads and obstruct enemy sightlines. 93 98 328
  • Flower Tree World Descent — Creates massive trees and poisonous pollen capable of crushing or incapacitating targets. 275 329 330
  • Wood Dragon Technique — Produces chakra-absorbing dragons used to pursue and restrain targets. 93 275
  • Uses Wood Release to create a massive forest at a Konoha battle site, leaving behind the corpses of several shinobi, including Dan Katō. 98
  • His Wood Release is explicitly inferior to Yagami's natural Red Maple Wood Release, despite being stronger than other transplanted variants. 426

Susanoo

Madara can manifest Susanoo from skeletal armor to a Complete Body form.

  • Previously armors the Nine-Tails in Susanoo through Sharingan control. 79
  • Uses Susanoo to counter Danzō's attacks and protect himself from Wood Release techniques. 93
  • Creates multiple Wood Clone-powered Susanoo giants to attack Konoha from several directions. 377 378
  • Deploys a Complete Body Susanoo with wings and twin swords against Yagami's Wood Golems. 426
  • His fully formed Susanoo retains little visible loss of power even after absorbing a full Wood Dragon's chakra drain. 381

Forbidden Dōjutsu

Madara retains techniques capable of rewriting the outcome of fatal attacks.

  • Izanam — Sacrifices an eye to alter illusion and reality after Kagami Uchiha's final attack destroys his body. 385
  • Izanagi — Avoids Yagami's Black Assassin Blade during their final battle. 427

Tengai Shinsei

Madara summons a meteor several kilometers wide during his battle against Yagami's Thousand-Armed Myōō. 427

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Long-handled scythe — Used in close combat; its speed damages Yagami's Absolute Defense: Bronze Radiance. 87 349
  • Uchiha Gunbai — Used to inflict the fatal blow on Kagami Uchiha. 385
  • Hashirama cells — Implanted into his body, visibly forming Hashirama's face in his chest and enabling Wood Release. 385

Relationships

  • Hashirama Senju — Historic rival and the only shinobi consistently acknowledged as Madara's superior; Madara measures other Wood Release users against him. 79 376 427
  • Nagato Uzumaki — Recipient of Madara's Rinnegan and central component of his resurrection plan; Madara watches over and cultivates him from childhood. 87 92 275
  • Tobi — Subordinate entrusted with Uchiha Goka's Mangekyo Sharingan; operates alongside Madara and later monitors Nagato. 349 429
  • Uchiha Obito — A chosen contingency plan whose Sharingan awakening Madara accelerates through engineered despair. 387 481
  • Uchiha Goka — Madara torments him with genjutsu after Uchiha Michi's death, seeking to stimulate the Mangekyo Sharingan's awakening. 329 338
  • Uchiha Zhong — Madara condemns Zhong for maintaining the Uchiha Clan's alliance with Konoha. 327 328
  • Kagami Uchiha — A Konoha shinobi Madara respects for forcing him to use Izanam before killing him. 385
  • Yagami / Fox — Repeated adversary whose Wood Release evokes Madara's rivalry with Hashirama; Yagami ultimately defeats and kills him in the Land of Rain. 330 425 427

Story Role / Major Arcs

Nagato's Protection and the Danzō Conflict

Madara appears while Konoha shinobi hold Nagato's family hostage, paralyzes Yagami's Anbu squad with genjutsu, and kills them with Great Fire Annihilation. 87 When Yagami leads Danzō to Madara's hiding place, Madara reveals Nagato's Rinnegan transplant and defeats Danzō with Wood Release, forcing him to flee through Izanagi. 92 93

Land of Rain Investigation

Madara intervenes when Konoha Anbu and Root threaten Nagato, using Flower Tree World Descent and Wood Dragon Technique to protect his chosen successor. 275 He later confronts an Uchiha-led Konoha investigation team, refuses to spare his former clansmen, kills Uchiha Michi, and psychologically breaks Uchiha Goka to force a Mangekyo awakening. 327 330

Konoha Assault

Madara launches an attack on Konoha with Susanoo-bearing Wood Clones while his true body targets Kushina Uzumaki, intending to kill the Nine-Tails' jinchūriki and allow the beast to revive elsewhere. 377 381 He kills Kushina and Minato in one iteration of the attack, prompting Yagami to reset time and counter his strategy. 378 381

Kagami Uchiha later delivers a seemingly fatal strike, but Madara survives by using Izanam at the cost of an eye. Madara kills Kagami, declares that he will allow Konoha to destroy itself, and withdraws. 385

Final Battle in Amegakure

Madara confronts Yagami in the Land of Rain, initially mistaking Yagami's Wood Release and Buddha technique for Hashirama's legacy. 425 426 He escalates from Wood Release to Complete Body Susanoo and Tengai Shinsei, while Yagami answers with Wood Golems and the Thousand-Armed Myōō. 426 427

Yagami defeats Madara using the Black Assassin Blade after countering both the meteor and Susanoo. Madara's body burns into blue flames, leaving only ashes. 427 428

Resurrection

Madara is later revived when Black Zetsu manipulates Nagato into using Samsara of Heavenly Life. He immediately retrieves the Rinnegan from Nagato's corpse and resumes directing Obito toward the complete Nine-Tails. 518

Notable Quotes

“The current Konoha has little to do with the Senju Clan anymore. The Uchiha Clan are lapdogs for trash like Sarutobi, Shimura, and the Ino-Shika-Cho.” 327

“Kagami Uchiha, you are the second person to force me to use this technique. The previous one... was still Senju Hashirama.” 385

“Fox, I admit you have some talent in imitating Hashirama Senju. However, you are far from Hashirama Senju.” 427

Trivia

  • Madara's battlefield reputation is so severe that Konoha's assessment advises shinobi below the “three divisions” level to flee rather than fight him. 280
  • He particularly despises the Wood Dragon Technique, calling it the Wood Release technique he hates most. 426
  • Madara's old body limits his taijutsu and mobility, but his chakra reserves remain extraordinarily high. 280 381
