Background / History

The Anbu operated as Konohagakure's hidden enforcement arm, nominally under the Hokage's direct command. During Yagami's early service, Sarutobi Hiruzen had delegated its management to Anbu Director Danzō. Heavy losses in Danzō's clash with the Third Raikage prompted urgent recruitment of Chunin-level ninja, including Yagami's original body 1.

The organization suffered an exceptionally high turnover rate during the war. Members were frequently replaced after missions, while their masks could be passed to successors after death 39 48. Root was initially established within the Anbu as a training institution; new recruits were required to complete three months of Root training before active service 40.

After the Second Shinobi World War, Hiruzen reduced the Anbu's size and returned most members to ordinary Konoha service with additional A-rank mission rewards. The surviving organization was formally divided into Root, four operational squads, and auxiliary offices 201.

Secrecy and Identity Protection

Anbu assassins conceal their identities so neither targets nor political authorities can connect a killing to the Hokage. Members generally avoid identifiable clan techniques and rely on taijutsu, kunai, and exploding tags unless a mission requires open combat 1 48.

Anbu service demands obedience, emotional detachment, and acceptance of severe casualties. Captains teach subordinates that mission completion takes precedence over grief for fallen teammates 48.
