Background

Xiao Yan was one of the Xiao Clan’s two celebrated young geniuses before his cultivation collapsed. At the annual test, he was reduced to Three-stage Dou Qi and publicly rated “Low,” carrying the stigma of a once-brilliant talent who had failed to advance for years. 1

His decline was caused by Yao Chen, whose soul resided in the Bone Flame Ring and secretly absorbed Xiao Yan’s Dou Qi to recover. The ring had reached Xiao Yan through the Zhang Family after his mother’s death; she had been gravely injured protecting the infant Zhang Yuan during the Xiao Clan’s retreat to Wutan City. 5 6 122

When Nalan Yanran arrived to annul their marriage agreement, Xiao Yan initially offered to transfer the engagement to Zhang Yuan to preserve both clans’ dignity. Zhang Yuan instead established a three-year duel agreement, giving Xiao Yan a chance to reclaim his standing. 4

Xiao Yan combines adult perspective from two lives with the insecurity left by his years as a “wasted” genius.
