Power Progression

Stage / Realm / Level Chapter Notes
Level 90 73 Historical breakthrough. After years stuck at level 89, obtaining a Medusa skull bone evolved his Martial Soul into the Jade Phosphorous Serpent Emperor and allowed him to cross the level-90 threshold.
Level 91 Titled Douluo 109 His longstanding level before treatment. Poison damage and the need to balance venom with Soul Power hindered his control and further advancement.
Level 92 Titled Douluo 112 With Ye Renxin’s protection, forced accumulated toxins into his soul bones. Removing their harmful effects improved his Soul Power control and enabled the breakthrough.
Level 93 236 Broke through while refining the Primordial Immortal Herb, with Ye Renxin supporting him through Soul Power acupuncture.
Level 96 / Peak Douluo 239 241 The same herb-refinement session ultimately raised him from level 92 to level 96 within hours. This was a genuine advancement, not a temporary enhancement.
Approaching level-97 strength — temporary 239 240 Ye Renxin’s evolved Nine Heart Begonia and acupuncture further enhanced his Soul Power during the battle with Yue Guan. His confirmed cultivation remained level 96.

Background / History

Dugu Bo was the first member of his ancestry to cross the level-90 threshold. Before his Martial Soul evolved, he suspected that the Jade Phosphorous Serpent’s limitations made becoming a Titled Douluo impossible. Its venom also harmed its own wielder: repeated Martial Soul Possession left toxins inside his body, gradually obstructing his meridians 73 107.

In his younger years, he competed with Yu Yuanzhen for decades. Their relationship eventually softened, and Yu Yuanzhen’s ideas about Dragon Cores inspired Dugu Bo to create his own Core Pearl. Nevertheless, Dugu Bo remained solitary, with only a few friends and no powerful faction behind him 106 107.

Several years before meeting Cheng Xiao, he discovered the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well. Although he could not identify many of its herbs, their presence suppressed his poisoning. He moved near the spring and regularly cultivated beside it to keep the toxins under control 52.

Appearance

  • Hair and beard: Ink-green; his hair is somewhat disheveled without appearing unkempt 49.
  • Eyes: Emerald-green and gleaming 49.
  • Face: Slightly stiff-looking, with sunken cheeks and a dry appearance 49.

Personality

Dugu Bo is proud, withdrawn, eccentric, and easily offended, particularly when his mastery of poison is questioned. Cheng Xiao’s initial diagnosis provokes him into applying overwhelming Soul Power pressure. The diagnosis also connects his irritability and extreme temperament to his disturbed physical condition 49 50.

His harsh manner conceals strong loyalty toward those he accepts as his own. He offers Cheng Xiao protection partly to prolong Ye Renxin’s life, later risks himself against stronger opponents, and considers entering Thunder Valley to obtain a Dragon Core for the boy. Cheng Xiao gradually comes to regard him as a caring elder rather than merely an unpredictable threat 59 107.

He is also calculating rather than indiscriminately reckless. He uses wagers, public promises, and threats of retaliation to protect Cheng Xiao. After defeating Yue Guan, and again during their confrontation in Spirit City, his apparent willingness to fight to the death is partly intimidation; he recognizes the danger of forcing a powerful enemy into desperation 105 240 274.

Abilities & Skills

Jade Phosphorous Serpent Emperor

  • Evolved from the Jade Phosphorous Serpent after he obtained a Medusa skull bone 73.
  • Its dragon ancestry makes it sensitive to Cheng Xiao’s Dragon Emperor Martial Soul, whose presence causes it to tremble 80.
  • Its Martial Soul Avatar transforms Dugu Bo into an emerald serpent approximately thirty meters long and as thick as a water vat 93 240.

Poison Arts

  • Mass destruction: His venom is capable of devastating a city and is especially effective against large groups of weaker opponents 59 287.
  • Battlefield denial: Poisonous mist rots vegetation and creates barriers that ordinary soul beasts refuse to enter 93 287.
  • Regeneration suppression: His poison helps kill an exceptionally regenerative Hundred-Life Flower Vine for Ye Lingling’s third soul ring 78.
  • Cultivation method: He created his own poison cultivation method. With Nine Heart Begonia support, he uses it to redirect accumulated toxins into soul bones 112.
  • Self-poisoning: Before treatment, venom left behind during Martial Soul Possession damaged his body and obstructed cultivation 107 109.
  • Storage limits: Soul bones have finite toxin capacity. Bones filled with his venom are also unsafe for Dugu Yan to inherit because their poisons may be incompatible 107.

Documented Soul Skills

Soul Skill Number Demonstrated Effect
Jade Phosphor Violet Poison Third Releases corrosive poisonous mist; used against Salas 79.
Jade Phosphor Serpent Fang Strike Fourth Condenses jade-green Soul Power into a serpent head with venomous fangs 238.
Blade of Poison Fang Fifth Forms a phantom poison fang over his hand for a slashing attack; leaves a deeply corrosive wound on Yue Guan 240.
Martial Soul Avatar — Jade Phosphorous Serpent Emperor Seventh Transforms him into his giant serpent form, which can release lethal poisonous mist 93 240.
Time Freeze Eighth Emits a gray beam that immobilizes Yue Guan after overcoming his ninth-skill attack 240.
Unnamed corrosive poison skill Ninth Produces highly corrosive poison, but is of little use against Yue Guan’s poison-resistant Martial Soul 240.

Core Pearl

  • Condensed through his evolved Martial Soul, following an idea inspired by Yu Yuanzhen’s proposed human Dragon Core 106.
  • Appears as a green pearl and contains half of Dugu Bo’s strength 106.
  • Can greatly accelerate cultivation when consumed. Dugu Bo offers to lend it to Cheng Xiao if he acknowledges him as his master 106.
  • Is distinct from the later Soul Core project, whose early attempts fail 112 113.

Limits and Counters

  • Poison-resistant experts: Much of his combat strength depends on venom. Opponents able to resist it sharply reduce his advantage 59 239.
  • Yue Guan: The Singular Velvet Sky Chrysanthemum restrains his toxins, accounting for Dugu Bo’s repeated defeats before reaching level 96 91 239.
  • Cheng Xiao: After consuming Aromatic Silk Beauty, Cheng Xiao withstands Dugu Bo’s poisonous mist without harm 86.
  • Bi Ji: Her healing light neutralizes his mist and restores poisoned soul beasts 287.
  • Myriad Demon King: Resists poison and can sever affected branches to prevent further corrosion 291.
  • Incompatible herbs: The supreme ice-and-fire herbs and Aromatic Silk Beauty would ruin or disperse his poison cultivation rather than strengthen it 71 86.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Medusa skull bone — The acquisition that enabled his Martial Soul evolution and historical level-90 breakthrough 73.
  • Toxin-storage soul bones — Hold the accumulated venom removed from his body during treatment 112.
  • Thunder Valley map — Obtained from Yu Yuanzhen after a wager. Leads to a dragon-bone-filled relic site dangerous even to Titled Douluo 105 106.
  • Eight Spider Lances — redirected gift — Cheng Xiao originally brings this External Soul Bone for Dugu Bo, but Dugu Bo recommends giving it to Dugu Yan instead 222 223.
  • Snow-Colored Swan Kiss — passed to Dugu Yan — Originally prepared for him; he agrees that his granddaughter should receive it after obtaining the Eight Spider Lances 225.

Relationships

  • Cheng Xiao — Junior, patient’s benefactor, and increasingly family-like companion. Dugu Bo repeatedly seeks him as a disciple, while Cheng Xiao calls him “Grandpa Dugu” without formally accepting 81 106 107.
  • Dugu Yan — Granddaughter. He wants to resolve her hereditary poisoning and prioritizes her future by passing valuable resources to her 112 223 225.
  • Ye Renxin — Old friend, healer, and closest combat partner. Dugu Bo tries to secure help to prolong his life; Ye Renxin supports his treatments and repeatedly saves him in battle 59 112 291.
  • Ye Lingling — His old friend’s granddaughter, who addresses him as “Grandpa Dugu.” He praises her manners and helps obtain her third soul ring 49 78.
  • Yue Guan / Chrysanthemum Douluo — Longstanding enemy and rival. Their formerly one-sided contests culminate in Dugu Bo’s victory after his level-96 breakthrough 91 239 240.
  • Yu Yuanzhen — Former friend and youthful rival. Their exchanges range from nostalgic familiarity to hostile bargaining and direct confrontation 106 280.
  • Prince Xue Xing — A benefactor whose past kindness influences Dugu Bo’s loyalties and his aversion toward Xue Qinghe 79 103.
  • Ning Fengzhi and Chen Xin / Sword Douluo — Negotiating counterparts. Dugu Bo secures a sect promise and eight years of protection for Cheng Xiao; his later advancement alarms Ning Fengzhi 105 275.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Meeting and Protecting Cheng Xiao

  • Ye Renxin introduces Cheng Xiao as someone who may treat Dugu Bo. Cheng Xiao identifies his self-poisoning and directs an acupuncture treatment, gradually overcoming his skepticism 49 50.
  • Seeing Cheng Xiao defeat Dugu Yan with a self-created soul skill changes his assessment of the boy. He offers either a favor or discipleship, with the latter requiring Cheng Xiao to help prolong Ye Renxin’s life 58 59.
  • Cheng Xiao later spends the favor on permanent cultivation access to the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well, leaving Dugu Bo regretting the missed chance to make him a disciple 81.
  • During Yue Guan’s attempt to capture Cheng Xiao, Dugu Bo fights the stronger Douluo and poisons the accompanying capture squad, relying on Cheng Xiao’s established immunity to survive the mist 86 93.

Political Protection and Treatment

  • Dugu Bo stages Cheng Xiao’s confrontation with the Yu cousins and the revelation of his Twin Martial Souls to deter hostile action by major factions 103 105.
  • The resulting negotiations secure the Thunder Valley map, a thousand-year Soul Bone from Xue Qinghe, a Seven Treasure Glazed Tile Sect promise, and eight years of protection from Sword Douluo 105.
  • His willingness to seek a Dragon Core for Cheng Xiao prompts the boy to disclose a treatment plan. Toxin storage succeeds, but subsequent Soul Core attempts make no initial progress; one failure leaves Dugu Bo bleeding severely under Ye Renxin’s care 107 112 113.
  • He later works with Ye Renxin to find a solution to the healer’s approaching death 222.

Breakthrough and Victory over Yue Guan

  • When Spirit Hall arrives to retrieve Cheng Xiao, Dugu Bo and Ye Renxin oppose Yue Guan. Cheng Xiao gives them the Primordial Immortal Herb and Star Luo Spirit Pearl respectively 234.
  • Dugu Bo refines his herb while attempting the Soul Core method again, then emerges at level 96 236 239.

  • Arrives during preparations for Cheng Xiao’s engagement ceremony and confronts Yue Guan over the limits of his safety promise 274.
  • Attempts to leave with Ye Renxin and the juniors, kills an obstructing Soul Emperor, and clashes with Yu Yuanzhen. Ye Renxin negotiates passage, but Spirit Hall’s gate closure prevents their departure 280.
  • During the Beast Tide, his mist inflicts enormous losses and blocks ordinary soul beasts. Bi Ji and Myriad Demon King counter him, forcing him onto the defensive despite Ye Renxin’s healing 287 289.
  • Myriad Demon King repeatedly wounds him severely; Ye Renxin’s support keeps him alive and restores his injuries 291.
