Background / History
Nuoding Junior Soul Master Academy
Tang San became acquainted with Cheng Xiao through Xiao Wu. Though outwardly polite, he quickly regarded Cheng as dangerous: Tang recognized that Cheng did not think or speak like a child and privately resolved to watch him carefully. He nonetheless agreed to help Cheng hunt a plant-type soul beast after Xiao Wu supported the request. 4
His bond with Xiao Wu became the source of his conflict with Cheng Xiao. After returning from a trip with Yu Xiaogang, Tang found Xiao Wu exhausted in Cheng's arms following a spar; the incident forced him to recognize his jealousy and feelings for her. He suppressed the killing intent that briefly surfaced, knowing Xiao Wu would hate him if he attacked Cheng in front of her. 8
Tang reached level 20 before Cheng and acquired his second soul ring from a Ghost Vine, gaining Parasite. He later lost a controlled spar to Cheng's Touch of Soul Binding, whose shadow-based restraint outpaced Blue Silver Grass's rooted Entanglement. The defeat made Tang question whether Blue Silver Grass was suited to the control path until Yu Xiaogang reassured him that Cheng's skill had exploitable weaknesses. 9 11 12
Third Soul Ring
At age twelve, Tang broke through to level 30. Yu Xiaogang and Flender accompanied him to the Star Dou Great Forest, where he absorbed a two-thousand-year Nine-Colored Dappled Spider soul ring beyond the accepted limit. His third soul skill creates a corrosive Blue Silver spiderweb that rapidly withers what it binds; the ring's success enabled Yu Xiaogang to publish his theory on surpassing soul-ring absorption limits. 87
Shrek Academy
After graduating from Nuoding, Tang and Xiao Wu encountered Cheng Xiao again in Suotuo City. Tang hoped Cheng was merely passing through, only to learn that Cheng planned to enter Shrek Academy and had already reached level 30; Tang himself was level 32. Cheng's return renewed Tang's anxiety over Xiao Wu's closeness to him. 127 128
Tang entered Shrek with Xiao Wu, Zhu Zhuqing, and Cheng. During the entrance battle against Zhao Wuji, he used his third soul skill and later demonstrated his second martial soul, the Clear Sky Hammer, to protect his incapacitated teammates. 136 137
Defeat by Cheng Xiao
When Shrek's students prepared to challenge Cheng Xiao, Tang developed their strategy from his accumulated knowledge of Cheng's skills. He used Oscar's Flying Mushroom Sausage to evade Touch of Soul Binding and employed the Purple Demon Eye to expose Cheng's simulated hundred-thousand-year-soul-beast pressure. 191 192
Cheng ultimately trapped Tang and Dai Mubai in Time-Space Reversal, reducing them to childhood forms and weakening their Soul Power. Tang fought the Shadow Soldiers with hidden weapons and Batwing Reincarnation, but Cheng deceived him through Hypnosis and Simulation before using Soul Stripping. The ensuing illusion of being condemned as a Tang Sect traitor caused Tang's mental collapse. 196 197
Tang remained unconscious for several days. When he awoke, his physical injuries were minor, but he had lost his memory of the battle and could no longer recall the creation of Buddha's Fury Tang Lotus. 199 200
Immortal Herb Album Deal
Tang restored Cheng Xiao's incomplete Immortal Herb Album in exchange for a Nine-Rank Purple Ganoderma. Although he initially claimed he wanted to give the herb to Yu Xiaogang, Cheng's overwhelming growth and Tang's desire to protect Xiao Wu pushed him toward consuming it himself. 201 202
Yu Xiaogang caught Tang preparing to take the ganoderma. Tang claimed Cheng's fourth soul skill had damaged the origin of his martial soul, and Yu ultimately allowed him to consume the herb rather than take it for himself. 203
Personality
Tang San is observant, guarded, and highly strategic. He recognized Cheng Xiao's concealed intentions early in their acquaintance, later catalogued Cheng's abilities in detail, and built Shrek's battle plan around countering them. His Purple Demon Eye also allowed him to identify flaws in Cheng's Simulation when the other students could not. 4 191 192
His attachment to Xiao Wu is his most visible emotional weakness. Tang conceals his jealousy when Cheng is near her, but Cheng's threats against Xiao Wu repeatedly drive him into rage and reckless action. After Xiao Wu's abduction by the Titan Giant Ape, Tang's protectiveness hardened into possessiveness; he resolved that neither soul beasts nor people could take her away. 8 194 187
Tang is deeply devoted to Yu Xiaogang and treats him as a father figure. However, his ambition and fear of falling behind Cheng lead him to conceal the ganoderma deal and lie about the condition of his martial soul when Yu catches him. 12 202 203
Abilities & Skills
Blue Silver Grass
Tang's primary martial soul is used for binding, battlefield control, and toxin delivery. Cheng Xiao later identifies it as an unawakened Blue Silver Emperor, though Tang was trained along a mutation-oriented Blue Silver Grass path. 11 218
- Entanglement — Causes Blue Silver Grass to grow and restrain targets; its need to root underground leaves it slower to pursue mobile opponents. 11
- Blue Silver Binding — Projects vines to catch, pull, and bind targets, including rescuing Xiao Wu after Cheng threw her aside. 127 194
- Parasite — Activates Blue Silver Grass seeds previously placed on targets, allowing Tang to produce vines from multiple opponents at once. 9 192
- Third soul skill — Forms a spiderweb that binds targets and carries the Nine-Colored Dappled Spider's corrosive toxins. 87
Clear Sky Hammer
Tang possesses the Clear Sky Hammer as a second martial soul. He revealed it during the battle against Cheng Xiao when he needed to halt Cheng's attack on the incapacitated Shrek students. 192
- Switching to the hammer dismisses the active Blue Silver Grass soul rings. 192
- Its appearance forced Cheng to abandon his attack on the other students and focus on Tang. 192
Mysterious Heaven Skill
Tang cultivates the Mysterious Heaven Skill. Cheng Xiao believes its circulation through the Eight Extraordinary Meridians compensated for Tang's earlier physical deficiencies and improved his Soul Power affinity, though Cheng also judged its direct advantage in cultivation speed to be limited. 3 6
Tang Sect Techniques
Tang retains several techniques and weapons associated with the Tang Sect.
- Purple Demon Eye — Enhances perception and Spiritual Power; it exposed Cheng's Simulation and warned Tang of an incoming Mental Storm. 192 196
- Ghost Shadow Perplexing Track — Movement technique that produces afterimages and supports evasive repositioning. 11 194
- Mysterious Jade Hand — Hardens Tang's hands for weapon use. 197
- Controlling Crane Capturing Dragon — Redirected Dragon Beard Needles away from Xiao Wu's crystal statue. 194
- Batwing Reincarnation — A hidden-weapon attack launched with sixteen projectiles at once. 197
- Hidden weapons — Uses items including Sleeve Arrows and Dragon Beard Needles. 194
Relationships
- Xiao Wu — Sworn sibling and Tang's most important companion. His affection for her becomes jealousy toward Cheng Xiao and an intense drive to protect her. 8 9 187 194
- Cheng Xiao — Classmate, rival, and recurring threat. Tang distrusts him from their first months together, loses to him in their early spar, and later suffers a mental collapse during their Shrek confrontation. 4 11 197
- Yu Xiaogang — Teacher and father figure. Tang pledges lifelong loyalty to him, but later deceives him over the Nine-Rank Purple Ganoderma. 12 203
- Tang Hao — Father. Tang Hao secretly monitors and protects Tang, investigates his unconsciousness after the battle with Cheng, and seeks revenge against Cheng for harming him. 200 210
- Shrek Seven Devils — Teammates whom Tang directs against Cheng Xiao, devising a strategy around their flight, support, and ranged attacks. 191 192
