Background / History

Xiao Yan was once a celebrated genius, but his cultivation stagnated between ages twelve and fifteen. The cause was the ring left by his mother: Yao Lao's remnant soul had attached itself to it and unconsciously absorbed Xiao Yan's Dou Qi to sustain itself. During this period, Xiao Yan fell from a prodigy to an object of ridicule within his clan. Only his childhood sweetheart, Xiao Xun'er, remained at his side. 1 2

Nalan Yanran's demand to annul their engagement became the decisive humiliation of Xiao Yan's youth. He answered by writing a letter of divorce and setting a three-year appointment, declaring that the poor young should not be bullied. The vow became the driving force behind his return to cultivation. 2

After initially throwing the ring away in fury, Xiao Yan accepted Yao Lao as his master in exchange for instruction in alchemy and cultivation. Though their relationship began with resentment and bargaining, Yao Lao's methods, resources, techniques, and direct protection transformed Xiao Yan into a cultivator capable of challenging opponents far above his realm. 3 4

Xiao Yan later fulfilled the three-year appointment by defeating Nalan Yanran, then became embroiled in a prolonged conflict with the Misty Cloud Sect and the Soul Hall. He destroyed the sect after its involvement in attacks on his family and the abduction of Yao Lao, although he ultimately ordered its remaining members to disband rather than exterminating them. 4 6 130
