Background / History
Poison Backlash and the Predicted Future
Dugu Bo possesses a valuable medicinal garden at the Ice and Fire Yin-Yang Well, but does not recognize the herbs growing there. Both he and his granddaughter suffer from toxins within their bodies, a problem he initially conceals by insisting that a poison master could not be harmed by his own poison 28 29 30.
Song Ye identifies Dugu Bo as a recruitment priority through his knowledge of destiny. In the future Song Ye describes, Tang San would cure Dugu Bo, earn his lasting loyalty, and benefit from his protection. Dugu Bo would eventually devastate the Spirit Empire’s army with poisonous mist. These are predicted events, not actions he has already performed in the novel’s current timeline 28.
The Herb Garden Exchange
Bibi Dong secretly visits the garden before Song Ye arrives. When Dugu Bo attacks her, she suppresses him with her Killing God Domain and defeats him in less than a minute. His Medusa’s Gaze delays one of her attacks for only half a second, giving him enough time to dodge. She then orders him to cooperate with her son’s proposed exchange of detoxification for the garden 29.
Although frightened into accepting the meeting, Dugu Bo recognizes that Song Ye’s Soul Bone Toxin Transfer Method genuinely makes sense. He hands over the garden and promises assistance in gratitude for saving him and Dugu Yan. Song Ye’s Reward and Punishment ability also begins linking Dugu Bo’s fortune to his own through the reward of treatment 30.
Becoming Song Ye’s Follower
Dugu Bo accompanies Song Ye’s third-ring hunt and subdues a ten-thousand-year Ice-Fire Dual-Attribute Tiger. Seeing Song Ye’s Imperial Seal Martial Soul and two thousand-year rings convinces him that the boy is an extraordinary prospect. He promises to keep the Martial Soul secret and begins considering a future alliance—and a possible place for Dugu Yan beside Song Ye 32 34 35.
After detoxification raises him to level 92, Dugu Bo agrees to protect Song Ye despite Dugu Yan’s objections. Song Ye then offers formal recruitment, a hundred-thousand-year Blue Silver Emperor spirit bone, and the prospect of Martial Soul evolution. Dugu Bo accepts on the condition that the bone goes to his granddaughter rather than himself. He also notices that each reward increases his desire to submit, which he attributes to Song Ye’s imperial aura 39 40.
Building the Tiancheng Sect
Dugu Bo’s status helps Song Ye gain entry to the Speed Clan. He subsequently accompanies the group to Gengxin City and intercepts attackers during the confrontation over the Blacksmith Association 42 57 60.
As the faction expands, he assists with its relocation to Heaven Dou City. He advises Song Ye to purchase land west of the city near Sunset Forest, approaches Crown Prince Xue Qinghe to facilitate the transaction, and offers 500,000 Gold Soul Coins toward construction. His residence also hosts Song Ye’s meeting with the crown prince 63 65 66 68.
When Bai He reaches level 90, Song Ye assigns Dugu Bo to help him obtain a ninth ring of at least seventy thousand years. Dugu Bo later learns Soul Core condensation alongside Bai He; both succeed after two days and advance by one level 71 74.
Appearance
- Age: Elderly 29.
- Hair and beard: Green 29.
- Clothing: Grey robe when confronting Bibi Dong at his garden 29.
- Martial Soul manifestation: Merges with the Jade Phosphor Serpent Emperor when preparing to fight 29.
Personality
Dugu Bo is proud and territorial, responding aggressively to an intruder in his herb garden. He is nevertheless pragmatic: after Bibi Dong overwhelms him, he accepts that cooperation offers both survival and a possible cure. He honors Song Ye’s life-saving assistance and recognizes the advantages of supporting his future rise 29 30 34 39.
His granddaughter’s welfare outweighs his own advancement. He gives her the hundred-thousand-year spirit bone offered for his recruitment and seeks a powerful backer for her future. His methods against enemies can be ruthless—he proposes poisoning an entire academy or street to kill Tang San—but he accepts Song Ye’s rejection of the plan 39 40 54.
He dislikes political pleasantries, though he tolerates them when negotiating for the sect. Among allies, he is more relaxed, exchanging jokes with Bai He about which of them is the weakest Titled Douluo 65 71.
