Background / History

Xiao Yan was once scorned within the Xiao Clan as his cultivation regressed for more than two years, leaving him at the third stage of Dou Qi. The cause was eventually revealed to be Yao Lao, an awakened soul residing in his ring who had been absorbing his Dou Qi. Though resentful, Xiao Yan accepted Yao Lao as his teacher after Yao Lao agreed to compensate for the harm done. Xiao Fan also supplied recovery resources to aid Yao Lao's restoration. 1 7

Guided by Yao Lao, Xiao Yan restored his cultivation through rigorous training. He advanced from the fourth and fifth stages of Dou Zhi Qi to Dou Zhe in time for the clan assessment, proving that he was no longer the powerless youth many had dismissed. 11 17 18

When Nalan Yanran and the Misty Cloud Sect came to annul their engagement, Xiao Yan challenged her to a duel. He defeated her with the Eight Extremities Collapse technique and publicly divorced her, ending the engagement on his own terms. 20 21

After receiving the Green Lotus Core Flame from Xiao Fan, Xiao Yan fused with the Heavenly Flame and departed Wutan City to seek strength in the wider world. He later travelled with Hai Bodong, sought instruction in Dou Techniques, and pursued further cultivation opportunities in the Snake-People Tribe. 31 43 64 66

Xiao Yan is determined and unwilling to accept defeat. Even while suffering the clan's disdain, he resolved to cultivate diligently rather than yield to despair. 2
