Background / History
Continental Unification
Thousands of years before the main story, the Sun Moon Federation unified the Douluo Continent. The Star Luo and Dou Ling empires retreated overseas and re-established their nations. Shrek Academy retained an autonomous Shrek City with its own garrison, while the Tang Sect and Spirit Pagoda remained major powers within the Federation's sphere 10.
The Federation's war against the Abyss Plane lasted more than six thousand years. A central obstacle was the Abyssal creatures' ability to resurrect repeatedly, preventing ordinary battlefield victories from ending the conflict 96.
At the story's opening, Snow City has been devastated. A Federation general orders casualty assessments, survivor rescue, and the release of reserve resources for reconstruction 1.
Military Rivalries and the Body Sect
Competition between the Central and Western legions draws Jiang Xiu into federal politics. Yu Guanzhi orders a colonel to bring him in over alleged contact with an Evil Soul Master, but Wang Jie intervenes. Jiang Xiu challenges the attempted detention on the grounds of missing authorization and improper jurisdiction 94 95.
Jiang Xiu subsequently explores an alliance between Yu Guanzhi and Dong Zi'an. Their eventual agreement exchanges Central Legion resource assistance for Dong Zi'an's promise not to contest Yu Guanzhi's position as Second Legion Commander 122 123 233 455.
The Federation's institutions also become weapons in the conflict between Shrek Academy and the Body Sect. Long Yeyue accuses Mu Ye of treason over alleged cooperation with soul beasts and attempts to have the War God Temple detain him. Dong Zi'an's intervention gives the Body Sect backing from a rival federal military authority 253 255 256 257.
Shrek City Disaster and Leadership Change
Jiang Xiu plans to use the theft of the Federation's God-Slayer Class Fixed Soul Guidance Shells to remove Chen Xinjie and enter federal government himself. Saving millions of Shrek City citizens gives him substantial public support, which the Ant Emperor deliberately channels toward his council nomination 441 452 453.
At the Appointment Conference, Chen Xinjie initially wins re-election as military head with 28 votes. News then arrives that two shells stored in District 13 have been stolen and detonated in Shrek City. The Federation dispatches relief troops, removes Chen Xinjie from military leadership, and appoints Dong Zi'an after he reveals Quasi-God strength and secures support from four major legions 455 456.
Jiang Xiu receives the powers and rights of a Federation councilor while being assigned to subjugate the Star Luo Empire. Chen Xinjie and Shrek-aligned councilors oppose his entry, but Dong Zi'an supports him and accepts responsibility for the mission 456 457.
Pressure on the Star Luo Empire
The Federation adopts subjugation of Star Luo as a prerequisite to the final war with the Abyss Plane. Dou Ling is already moving toward the Federation, leaving Star Luo as the remaining resistant empire 457.
Dong Zi'an applies pressure before Jiang Xiu's arrival. Federal demands include exorbitant taxes and threats of war, provoking Dai Tianling's anger and Dai Yun'er's efforts to intervene 460 464.
In Star Luo, Jiang Xiu suppresses a Wang Clan riot intended to pressure the emperor into negotiations. He publicly presents submission to the Federation as necessary for survival and reveals the scale of the approaching Abyssal invasion 498.
Abyssal War
Early fighting reaches a stalemate, partly because Jiang Xiu secretly directs Shadow Legion members embedded in the invading army to minimize Federation casualties. Wang Jie notices the unusual battlefield outcomes and suspects outside assistance 583 585.
The Northern Legion's sector is later breached. Jiang Xiu intervenes before its collapse, destroys the attacking army, and prevents the slain creatures from returning to the Abyss Plane. The North Sea Legion also repels its attackers with help from the Yuanen Family's Limit Douluos 600 601 603 606 607.
During the first full-scale invasion, federal commanders deliberately allow the Demon Empress to advance into their preparations. The Southern Legion opens fire with Level 9 shells, and the defending forces eventually counterattack, destroy most of the retreating Abyssal army, and rebuild their lines 653 654 661.
The second invasion brings stronger Abyssal emperors and the Demon Empress's god-level assault. The Sentimental and Ruthless Douluos sacrifice themselves to seal the attackers for three days, buying time to repair defenses and treat the wounded 673 686 690.
Public Mobilization and Later Research
After initially considering concealment of the crisis, the Federation Council accepts Mo Lan's call for live battlefield reporting. It orders available supplies and internal legions to support the front immediately 691.
When Chen Xinjie is restrained and the defensive line approaches collapse, reserve camps are mobilized. Jiang Xiu's return to the front is broadcast under his title of Federation General of Heavenly Strategy 705 706.
By the later research period, the Tang Sect has submitted to the Federation. Federal leaders heavily support Ling Zichen's work, including her ambitions to develop god-compatible soul tools, space-traveling warships, and shells capable of destroying an entire plane; these remain stated research goals in the provided account 728.
Government and Politics
| Institution or Factor | Function and Significance |
|---|---|
| Federation Council | Deliberates on appointments, foreign policy, wartime information, and nationwide mobilization 455 457 691. |
| Speaker | Pan Wen presides over the leadership transition and seeks to maintain order during the Appointment Conference 455 456. |
| Appointment Conference | Determines major offices and can reshape the balance between military and political factions 455 456. |
| Legion Voting Rights | Military formations retain political influence even when their combat strength is comparatively weak; the Southern Legion is one such example 124. |
| Hawk and Dove Factions | The Federation is divided between these factions amid overlapping institutional and family interests 10. |
| Shrek Alumni Bloc | Academy graduates in the Council form a sizable faction capable of influencing federal policy; new graduates continually replenish its membership 456 588. |
| Public Opinion | Rumors can affect elections, while Jiang Xiu's rescue of Shrek City citizens provides leverage for his appointment 95 453. |
| Local Jurisdiction and Warrants | Jiang Xiu invokes local-government jurisdiction and federal warrant requirements against a Central Legion colonel's attempted detention 94. |
- Councilor authority abroad: Jiang Xiu's granted councilor powers allow his words and will outside the Federation to represent the Federation itself 457.
- Rules versus influence: Jiang Xiu regards the Federation's formal systems as more developed than those of the old empires, but still dependent on strength. The colonel's attempted seizure illustrates how military authority can be abused 94.
- Civilian information rights: Mo Lan argues that citizens should know the real battlefield situation rather than receive false reassurance; the Council ultimately adopts her proposal 691.
Military Organization
The Federation is repeatedly described as having eight great legions. Its military combines regional defense forces, specialist formations, mecha units, and the War God Temple 95 124 347.
Documented Legions
| Formation | Commander or Associated Figure | Responsibilities and Distinguishing Features |
|---|---|---|
| Central Legion | Yu Guanzhi | Holds jurisdiction across the federal heartland; assists local authorities, suppresses Evil Soul Masters, and maintains internal peace. Its emblem combines a sun, moon, and sword 375. |
| Western Legion | Dong Zi'an | Principal military backer of the Body Sect; ranks alongside the Central Legion among the strongest formations outside the Sea God Legion 95 257 347. |
| Sea God Legion | Chen Xinjie | Described as the strongest overall, apart from the Blood God Legion guarding the Abyssal Passage; forms a major part of Chen Xinjie's power base 343 347. |
| Blood God Legion | — | Guards the Abyssal Passage and participates in the counterattack against the full-scale invasion 347 655. |
| Southern Legion | Angel family; Le Zhengen | Family-subsidized formation whose supplies make it especially responsive to the Angel family's orders. Although initially regarded as relatively weak, it retains voting rights and later deploys substantial firepower 124 654 655. |
| Northern Legion | Guo Zhenfeng | Targeted as the weakest point during an Abyssal offensive; its breached sector is saved by Jiang Xiu 600 601 603 606. |
| North Sea Legion | Shen Yue | Stationed near Devil Island to monitor its dangers; later reinforced by the Yuanen Family during the Abyssal war 402 607. |
| Eastsea Legion | — | Uses Eastsea City as its training base and maintains naval readiness against Sea Soul Beasts 112. |
War God Temple
- Mandate: Maintains continental stability and monitors, restrains, or sanctions major factions 233 247 510.
- Combat strength: Its Eighteen War Gods are veterans selected through repeated life-and-death battles; many come from the Federation army and retain military ranks 233 253.
- Leadership: Chen Xinjie controls the Temple alongside his other offices. After losing military leadership, he attempts to preserve his authority there 343 456.
- Political partiality: War Gods openly support Shrek Academy against the Body Sect and later ease Tang Wulin's group through their trials under secret orders 253 508.
- Internal dissent: Shi Mengshan objects both to targeting the Body Sect and to handing the Federation's ultimate weapon to an academy 255 510.
Other Forces
- Federal Imperial Guard: Ordered to accompany the Western Legion under Wang Jie in the operation to seize Eternal Heaven from the War God Temple 508.
- Enforcement Squad: Arrives at the Spirit Pagoda under Lieutenant General Wang Jie, whose God-Rank Mecha and substantial force alarm Qiangu Dongfeng 522.
- Reserve camps: Activated during the most critical stage of the war, with orders to reinforce the front before civilians are exposed to the invasion 705.
Weapons and Defensive Technology
God-Slayer Class Fixed Soul Guidance Shells
- Strategic stockpile: The Federation possesses three Level 12 shells. Two are stored in District 13 and one in the War God Temple 372.
- Eternal Heaven: The final remaining shell becomes the focus of competing federal, Shrek, and Qiangu interests 508 510.
- Development restrictions: Research is halted because of the enormous resource cost; extraction of the required Source Material is strictly prohibited 258.
- Political consequences: The theft and detonation of the two District 13 shells directly cause Chen Xinjie's removal from military leadership 455 456.
- Emergency use: Ba Emperor prepares Eternal Heaven as a means of breaking the Blood River God-Slaying Array so federal powerhouses can contend with the Demon Empress 688.
Conventional Battlefield Systems
- Level 9 shells: The Southern Legion launches twenty during the first full-scale invasion. Seventeen explosions tear through enemy ranks and nearly halve the initial wave 654.
- Soul Guidance Ray Guns: Used to attack surviving invaders after the opening artillery barrage 654.
- Linked Soul Guidance Array: Provides a defensive barrier, but Bee Emperor Clan self-detonations breach it 655.
- Mecha formations: The late-war defensive line contains no white- or yellow-grade mechas; its lowest grade is purple, with black-grade machines forming the majority 693.
- Targeting limitation: Abyss Spirit Dragon mental concealment prevents federal shells and rays from locking onto protected creatures 679.
- God-level limitation: Existing soul guidance technology cannot penetrate the God-Level Blood River God-Slaying Array under the Abyssal Sage King's control 705.
