Background / History
Dugu Yan inherits the Jade Phosphor Snake martial soul and its dangerous venom backlash. Unlike the poison that develops after martial-soul awakening in other members of the family, hers had already infected her body in her mother’s womb. Dugu Bo spends years searching for a remedy without success 70.
As a child, she asks why her eyes differ from other people’s, but Dugu Bo initially reassures her with an excuse. He later explains their connection to the family’s martial soul, while withholding the full severity of the condition. After reaching level 30 and experiencing discomfort during cultivation, she presses him for the truth and learns that the backlash has killed members of their family, including her mother 41 70.
At Heaven Dou Royal Academy, her strength and her grandfather’s reputation give her considerable standing among her peers. Many students of her year regard her as a “big sister,” although she does not use her background to bully others 37.
Appearance
Dugu Yan has a tall figure, short purple hair, and a striking face described as both heroic and alluring 35 52.
- Green eyes: Her unusual dark-green pupils result from the Jade Phosphor Snake’s toxin erosion 19 41.
- Original martial-soul possession: A diamond-shaped scale appears on her forehead, and her legs transform into a thick, muscular snake tail 36.
- After evolution: Her possessed form’s ink-green scales become pale gold, her forehead marking changes shape, and her formerly cold, sinister aura becomes pure and profound 75.
Personality
Proud, impulsive, and intensely competitive, Dugu Yan initially attacks Mo Li without allowing him to explain why he is holding her pouch. Losing to him wounds her pride and motivates repeated rematches and increasingly strenuous training 17 19 35 40.
Her temper conceals a sensitive, easily embarrassed side. Mo Li’s teasing often makes her blush or lose her composure, while Ye Lingling regularly intervenes to calm their arguments. Mo Li calls her a “tsundere,” a term she does not understand 37 41 87.
She is protective of her friends and deeply attached to her grandfather. Even when seeking treatment for her own potentially fatal condition, she insists that Dugu Bo promise not to harm Mo Li or take his anger out on others. Mo Li’s example also makes her more disciplined and less willful in cultivation 12 70.
Abilities & Skills
Jade Phosphor Snake
Her original beast martial soul specializes in poison, including venom carried within her soul power 18.
- Releases poisonous mist capable of weakening an opponent; she initially intends to incapacitate Mo Li rather than kill him 18.
- Martial-soul possession enhances her attributes, particularly poison potency, and provides a snake tail for physical attacks 36.
- Her physical constitution is stronger than that of an average soul master 28.
- Counter: Mo Li’s Nine Nether Fire burns away her toxins, neutralizing her principal combat advantage 18 36.
- Drawback: Its toxins progressively erode her body, with further cultivation and additional rings threatening to worsen the backlash 37 41 70.
First Soul Skill: Jade Scale Red Poison
An augmentation skill with an effect similar to a berserk state 36.
- Increases strength and attack power 36.
- Adds a crimson tint to her green pupils while active 36.
- Used alongside martial-soul possession when she switches to physical combat against Mo Li 36.
Second Soul Skill: Jade Scale Blue Poison
Produces a dense cloud of blue toxic mist with a powerful paralytic effect 17 36.
- Can be released from her mouth and spread rapidly through the air 36.
- She holds back during the street encounter but releases its full power in their academy rematch 36.
- Even at full strength, the mist is completely incinerated by Mo Li’s Nine Nether Fire 36.
Golden Scale Flood Dragon
The Earth Dragon Golden Melon evolves her martial soul beyond its original serpentine form and completely clears her venom backlash 75.
- Exerts bloodline suppression on Dugu Bo’s Jade Phosphor Snake Emperor 75.
- Dugu Bo considers it no weaker than his own martial soul, with substantially greater future potential 89.
- Its evolution opens a cultivation path beyond poison. Following Mo Li’s suggestion, Dugu Bo chooses a non-poison third ring for her 89.
Third Soul Skill: Golden Scale Protection
Obtained from an approximately 3,000-year Golden Spirit Python, chosen by Dugu Bo after considering the scarcity of flood-dragon-type soul beasts 89.
- Significantly increases defense and explosive power 89.
- Despite its defensive-sounding name, it is an augmentation skill rather than simply a protective barrier 89.
Relationships
- Dugu Bo — Grandfather and guardian. He selects her soul rings, searches for a cure for her inherited poison, and openly dotes on her. She worries about his suffering and urges him to accept treatment 41 69 70 74.
- Ye Lingling — Close friend and frequent companion. Ye Lingling treats her after her first defeat, witnesses her rematches, and mediates her arguments with Mo Li. Dugu Yan is protective of her and initially resents Mo Li’s easy closeness with her 12 18 19 35 37.
- Mo Li — Rival, friend, and the person who arranges her cure. Their relationship develops from a mistaken accusation into playful rivalry, trust, and growing affection. Although she publicly claims to like him to repel Yu Tianheng, Mo Li later describes them to Dugu Bo as friends 19 41 55 72 75 84.
- Yu Tianheng — Unwanted suitor. She rejects him after discovering that he falsely claims to be her boyfriend and intimidates other students into avoiding her. His refusal to respect that rejection leads to a public confrontation 54 55 59.
- Liu Erlong — Dean of Blue Tyrant Academy. Dugu Yan admires her strength and later helps her locate Mo Li at the Ice and Fire Yin-Yang Well 38 79 92.
- Jiang Zhu — Acquaintance through Mo Li. Dugu Yan apologizes to both of them after the pouch misunderstanding and later guides Jiang Zhu around Heaven Dou Royal Academy 19 54.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Misunderstanding and Rematches
Dugu Yan meets Mo Li in a street confrontation after mistaking him for the thief who took her pouch. His flames neutralize her poison, and he stops his attack just before striking her face. Ye Lingling’s arrival reveals that he previously helped her, allowing the misunderstanding to be cleared and Dugu Yan to apologize 17 18 19.
Determined to recover her pride, she visits Blue Tyrant Academy for a rematch after more than half a month of training. She again loses, despite using stronger poison and switching to physical combat. Their fall leaves them in an embarrassing position, though Mo Li protects the back of her head. Nearly two months later, she returns at level 29 seeking another chance 35 36 40.
Heaven Dou Royal Academy Conflict
Dugu Yan invites Mo Li and Jiang Zhu to her academy, hoping its facilities will settle their argument over which school is better. During the visit, Yu Tianheng’s pursuit becomes a public dispute. She rebukes him, links arms with Mo Li, and declares affection for Mo Li as a means of rejecting the unwanted advances 52 53 54 55 56.
She later explains how Yu Tianheng has interfered with her sparring partners and falsely presented himself as her boyfriend. Mo Li offers to help her and Ye Lingling deal with him 59.
Cure and Martial-Soul Evolution
After Mo Li identifies the danger behind her green eyes, Dugu Yan agrees to relay his proposed treatment to Dugu Bo. Upon reaching level 30, she secures her grandfather’s promise not to harm Mo Li before arranging their meeting 41 70.
At the Ice and Fire Yin-Yang Well, Mo Li identifies the Earth Dragon Golden Melon as a cure. Dugu Yan consumes it, eliminating her toxins and evolving her martial soul into the Golden Scale Flood Dragon. Before she leaves, Mo Li entrusts her with two jade boxes containing immortal herbs and instructions for Ye Lingling 73 74 75.
Blue Tyrant Academy Transfer
Dugu Yan accompanies Ye Lingling and Liu Erlong to the Ice and Fire Yin-Yang Well to find Mo Li. When she sees Mo Li and Dugu Bo fighting, she activates martial-soul possession and rushes toward them; afterward, she is relieved that both survive 79 82 84.
Initially resistant to transferring schools, she becomes receptive when Mo Li offers freedom from Yu Tianheng’s harassment and daily opportunities to spar. She subsequently confirms her willingness to join Blue Tyrant Academy 87 89.
She then accompanies the search for Mo Li’s third soul ring. During the Mystic Yang Bird encounter, his Undying Domain covers her in purple stardust that feels warm and comfortable and increases her soul power; no new numerical level is stated 92 93.
