Background / History

Family Poison Backlash

The Jade Phosphor Snake martial soul grants the Dugu family powerful venom but also poisons its wielders. Dugu Bo describes generations of relatives dying in agony despite repeated attempts to resolve the defect. His own toxins have fused with his body over time, causing periodic attacks that became more violent after he reached Title Douluo rank 70.

Dugu Yan’s condition is especially troubling to him because she was infected before birth. He spends years traveling in search of a solution for her, initially concealing the full severity of the family’s condition 41 70.

Discovery of the Ice and Fire Yin-Yang Well

More than a decade before meeting Mo Li, Dugu Bo discovers the Ice and Fire Yin-Yang Well in Sunset Forest. He claims it as his cultivation site and surrounds it with poison arrays. Its unusual environment suppresses his toxin backlash and accelerates the growth of medicinal herbs, although he cannot identify many of the plants or safely consume them 72 73.

Eventually, even the well’s suppression cannot spare him extreme pain. He spends year after year cultivating there to manage the poison 74.

Meeting Mo Li

Dugu Bo returns after six months away and finds that Dugu Yan has reached level thirty earlier than expected. When she questions their martial soul’s defect, he reveals its lethal consequences. Her account of Mo Li’s knowledge persuades him to meet the boy, and he promises her that he will not harm Mo Li or others during the encounter 69 70.

Their first meeting is confrontational: Dugu Bo demands information and repeatedly threatens Mo Li, who refuses to be intimidated. His attitude changes when Mo Li accurately describes the Ice and Fire Yin-Yang Well and claims to recognize herbs capable of detoxification. Dugu Bo takes him to the valley and grants him two days to identify a remedy 71 72 73.

Treatment and Rewards

Mo Li identifies a single Earth Dragon Golden Melon that can eliminate either Dugu Bo’s or Dugu Yan’s backlash. Dugu Bo refuses to take it despite his granddaughter’s pleas, leaving it for her. He instead accepts a second treatment involving the relocation of his toxins into a spirit bone 73 74.

After confirming that Dugu Yan’s poison has vanished and her martial soul has evolved into a Golden Scale Flood Dragon, Dugu Bo becomes markedly friendlier toward Mo Li. He permits a harvest of fifteen herbs, allows Mo Li to cultivate at the well, and promises three requests upon the successful resolution of his own condition, provided they do not violate his principles 74 75.

Mo Li’s first treatment lasts half a day and substantially relieves Dugu Bo’s symptoms. Dugu Bo helps the exhausted boy recover, then offers to accept him as a disciple. He hopes this connection will also help ensure that Dugu Yan has someone beside her if he dies. Mo Li declines, and Dugu Bo does not force the matter 77.

Conflict with Liu Erlong and Mo Li

When Liu Erlong comes looking for Mo Li, Dugu Bo refuses her access and fights her. Dugu Yan intervenes, persuading him to remove the poison affecting the visitors and let Liu Erlong search the valley 80 81.

Finding Mo Li’s bracelet near the pool leads Liu Erlong to believe he has died. Dugu Bo also fears that Mo Li ignored his warnings and entered the lethal water. Feeling guilty, he holds back against Liu Erlong’s desperate attacks, but still injures her before Mo Li emerges 81 82.

Mo Li demands that Dugu Bo withstand one strike to settle the matter. Drawing on the well’s energy, Mo Li evolves his martial soul and overwhelms Dugu Bo’s Jade Phosphor Snake Emperor, breaking his eighth soul skill. Dugu Bo suffers severe injuries but conceals their extent to reassure Dugu Yan. He acknowledges Mo Li’s restraint and offers additional herbs as compensation; Mo Li declines and promises to finish treating him 82 83 84.

Appearance

Dugu Bo is an elderly, thin man with an aged face, beard, withered hands, and a raspy voice 70 72 83.

  • Eyes: Usually described as cloudy or murky; glow emerald green when his power or emotions rise 70 72 80.
  • Clothing: Wears gray robes 80.
  • Martial Soul Avatar: A giant emerald snake over ten zhang long, covered in diamond-shaped scales and surrounded by nine soul rings 83.

Personality

Dugu Bo is reputed to be reclusive, eccentric, and morally ambiguous. He is intimidating in person, quick to threaten those who challenge him, and fiercely protective of his territory and dignity. His reputation near Heaven Dou City is so fearsome that his name is said to stop children from crying 54 70 71 80.

His treatment of Dugu Yan contrasts sharply with that reputation. He openly dotes on her, teases her about possible romantic interests, and places her survival above his own relief from pain. Concern for her future also motivates his attempt to recruit Mo Li as a disciple 70 74 77.

Although suspicious and reluctant to part with his herbs, he recognizes genuine help and takes his promises seriously. He does not inspect Mo Li’s harvest after granting permission, accepts the boy’s refusal of apprenticeship, and acknowledges restraint even after suffering a humiliating defeat 74 75 77 84.

  • Mo Li — Healer, negotiating partner, and rejected prospective disciple. Their relationship moves from threats to gratitude, then through a violent confrontation to renewed understanding. Mo Li remains committed to completing his treatment 71 75 77 84.
  • Liu Erlong — Initially a trespasser and opponent in his eyes. His refusal to let her see Mo Li triggers their fight; injuring her leads to Mo Li’s retaliation 80 81 82.
  • Ye Lingling — Dugu Yan’s close friend. He supplies her with refined Whale Rubber and later a pill for safe passage through his poison arrays 77 84.
