At dusk, in Sunset Forest, a lightning-like streak of light tore through the darkness between the trees.
Wherever it passed, hundred-year and thousand-year Soul Beasts scattered in retreat—crimson Fire Cloud Leopards sprang into the high branches, their golden vertical pupils reflecting that bolt of light; Earth Dragon Lizards clad in rocky armor hurriedly burrowed into their holes, leaving only half their tails trembling outside.
The streak of light stopped by a lake.
Pale purple mist floated over the water. As the streak came to a halt, the mist began to churn uneasily.
The light faded, revealing Zhang Qingxuan within.
Zhang Qingxuan scratched his head and looked around, muttering, "I've been searching all day. How haven't I found it yet?"
Zhang Qingxuan took a deep breath, and the Yin-Yang Taiji Diagram and Green Leaf Sword appeared out of thin air.
"Hey, can you two sense it?" Zhang Qingxuan asked his two martial souls, anticipation in his voice.
The Yin-Yang Diagram rotated slowly, while the Green Leaf Sword hovered quietly—neither showed any reaction.
Zhang Qingxuan sighed helplessly. "Come on! Put in some effort! That place is a natural blessed land! The immortal herbs there are incredibly powerful! Eating them might even let you advance another rank!"
After all that, the Yin-Yang Diagram continued rotating at a steady pace, while the Green Leaf Sword did not even tremble.
"Nice. You two are really something." Zhang Qingxuan pressed a hand to his forehead and let out a long sigh.
Just as he was feeling dejected—
The center of the lake exploded.
Not the kind of explosion that sent water splashing everywhere, but as though an invisible giant hand had overturned the entire lake from below.
A white figure burst from the water, bringing not waves, but a waterspout that shot into the sky!
It was a White Flood Dragon.
It was more than a hundred feet long, its scales as white as snow and jade, gleaming with a cold radiance beneath the last rays of daylight.
Its head resembled a dragon's, yet was not truly one. Two dragon horns grew from its brow, blue sparks flickering at their tips.
Its eyes were dark gold, and its vertical pupils had narrowed into slits as it stared fixedly at the uninvited guest by the shore.
"Roar—!"
Its draconic roar was like thunder, sending ripples across the lake and shaking leaves from the ancient trees along the bank.
"Roar—!" (Get out of my territory!)
"Well, well. Who would've thought there was an intelligent White Flood Dragon in this lake?" Zhang Qingxuan's eyes lit up, and his dejection vanished at once.
Before his words had faded, the White Flood Dragon swung out a claw.
The claw was as large as a millstone, covered in fine white scales. Its talons gleamed sharply as it came crashing down toward Zhang Qingxuan's head!
Before the claw even arrived, the force of the wind had already pressed a hollow into the ground beneath Zhang Qingxuan's feet, blasting fallen leaves outward in every direction.
"Heh, looks like your brain hasn't fully developed. You can't even see the gap in our strength." Zhang Qingxuan merely smiled.
He did not move so much as a step.
At the instant the dragon claw was about to touch his hair, a pale golden barrier appeared out of nowhere. Thin as a cicada's wing, it nonetheless firmly blocked an attack capable of shattering boulders!
"Buzz—!"
Ripples spread across the golden barrier as though a stone had fallen into still water, but that was all.
The White Flood Dragon's pupils contracted. Clearly, it had not expected this.
Meanwhile, Zhang Qingxuan narrowed his eyes.
He had noticed something strange: the White Flood Dragon carried very little baleful aura. Wild Soul Beasts capable of claiming a vast lake deep within Sunset Forest had all fought and killed their way there.
Baleful aura and bloodlust should have followed it like shadows, yet this White Flood Dragon had neither. There was even a faint trace of... fortune lingering around it.
A pale golden, barely perceptible aura curled around the flood dragon's body like wisps of smoke.
"Interesting," Zhang Qingxuan murmured.
"It has not killed much, yet it possesses the fortune to transform into a dragon... If this White Flood Dragon received proper guidance, it would surely become a true dragon in the future."
With that thought, his heart stirred.
The flood dragon's tail swept toward him like a steel whip. Only then did Zhang Qingxuan unhurriedly step back three paces. The tail scraped past the golden barrier and smashed the trees behind him to pieces.
"Hey! Little white snake, want to follow me? I guarantee you'll have a boundless future!" Zhang Qingxuan called with a smiling face, his voice passing clearly through the barrier.
"Roar—!" (Get lost! I am a flood dragon!)
The White Flood Dragon had clearly understood him. The fury in its dark golden vertical pupils intensified.
It suddenly threw its head back toward the heavens and opened its bloody maw wide. Lightning began gathering in its throat—not lightning formed from Soul Power, but genuine lightning that stirred the might of heaven and earth!
At some point, dark clouds had gathered over the lake.
The ink-black clouds pressed low overhead, electric serpents writhing within them as muffled thunder rumbled like the heartbeat of some colossal beast.
Bolts of lightning struck down from the clouds, yet strangely, every one of them converged upon the White Flood Dragon. They wrapped around its body before being absorbed into the ever-brightening sphere of lightning in its throat.
The lightning sphere swelled from the size of a fist to the size of a millstone. Its dazzling blue-white radiance turned the dim lakeshore bright as day, while the crackling currents made one's scalp tingle.
"Damn, it can summon wind and rain!" Zhang Qingxuan was delighted rather than alarmed.
"It really looks like the dragons from where I came from!"
He paid no attention at all to the lightning sphere gathering terrifying power. Instead, he clasped his hands behind his back and watched with great interest as the White Flood Dragon drew in lightning.
Boom—!
A bolt of lightning as thick as a water barrel struck down from the dark clouds, hitting the White Flood Dragon squarely on the back.
The White Flood Dragon shuddered all over. Not only was it unharmed, its aura rose even further. The lightning sphere in its mouth expanded again, and the blue sparks dancing across its surface turned blazing white!
"Excellent! This flood dragon is fated to be with me!" Zhang Qingxuan clapped his hands and laughed, his eyes shining brilliantly.
He examined the White Flood Dragon from head to tail once more, studying every part of it carefully. The more he looked, the more satisfied he became: its scales were whole and lustrous, its horn straight and free of cracks, its claws and fangs sharp, its eyes lively and furious without revealing savage bloodlust—and even rarer was the faint fortune around its body...
"Roar—!"
The White Flood Dragon was utterly enraged, the last trace of reason in its dark golden vertical pupils swallowed by lightning.
It abruptly lowered its head and opened its enormous maw. The blazing white lightning sphere, which had gathered the power of the thunderclouds filling the sky, turned into a torrent of lightning dozens of feet wide and came roaring forth!
Wherever it passed, the air was ionized with a scorched smell. The lake turned deathly white, and the grass and trees along the shore carbonized and crumbled before the lightning even reached them!
Boom—!!!
The pillar of lightning struck the golden barrier head-on.
For that instant, time seemed to freeze.
Then—
A visible shockwave exploded outward in a sphere! Ancient trees within a hundred feet of the shore snapped in unison and flew backward. The earth was thrown several feet into the air, while a massive depression was pressed into the lake. Great waves shot skyward before falling back down as a torrential rain.
Smoke and dust filled the air, obscuring everything.
The White Flood Dragon panted heavily, staring fixedly at the center of the dust cloud—there, a speck of golden light still shone steadily, neither wavering nor dimming.
"Keep going!" Zhang Qingxuan's clear voice came from within the dust, carrying even a hint of laughter.
"Your lightning isn't good enough! Keep at it! Since coming to this world, nobody's ever struck me with lightning! Let me see where your limit is! Keep striking! Don't chicken out!"
Soul Power blew away the dust, revealing the scene within—
Zhang Qingxuan's green robe was immaculate, and not even a strand of his hair was out of place.
That pale golden barrier remained as thin as a cicada's wing, easily deflecting the previous attack.
"Roar—!" (I refuse to believe your Soul Power is endless!)
The White Flood Dragon threw its head back and roared, its voice shaking the surrounding wilderness.
It crazily drew upon the remaining lightning in the storm clouds. Bolt after bolt crashed down, no longer gathered into a sphere, but pouring down like a torrential rain!
Boom! Boom! Boom—!!!
Each bolt shone brighter than the last, tearing the night sky into fragments.
The lakeshore had become scorched earth, and the lake boiled. Water vapor rose into a thick fog, only to be torn apart again by lightning. The nearby Soul Beasts had long since fled without a trace; even the chirping of insects had vanished.
Even the White Flood Dragon itself no longer knew how many bolts of lightning it had unleashed.
