Appearance
Barry operates as the Flash in a red suit and is typically surrounded by orange Speed Force lightning while running. 157 255
- Orange lightning distinguishes his Speed Force energy from Zoom’s blue lightning and Reverse-Flash’s red lightning. 157
- His movement creates sonic booms, lightning trails, and numerous afterimages at high speed. 156 255
Personality
Barry is principled, protective, and deeply committed to lawful justice. He refuses to escape prison with his powers even when framed for murder, believing that doing so would undermine the law and turn the Flash into a fugitive. 257
His compassion can become self-destructive. After losing his parents, he creates Flashpoint to save his mother, then struggles to abandon the altered timeline despite its escalating consequences. 166 172 173 He ultimately accepts responsibility for the paradox and enters the Speed Force to protect Central City and its timeline. 253
Though initially uncertain about Lu Heng, Barry recognizes that Lu is willing to negotiate rather than simply take what he wants. Over time, Lu’s actions—especially resurrecting Henry Allen—earn Barry’s complete trust. 158 253
Abilities & Skills
Speed Force Connection
Barry draws on the Speed Force for superhuman movement, accelerated perception, and lightning-based attacks.
- Can cross Central City and respond to emergencies in moments. 156 255
- Generates orange Speed Force lightning while running. 156 157
- Reaches at least 4,000 miles per minute after returning from the Speed Force. 255
- Can enter the Speed Force, though doing so exposes him to its demands and temporal consequences. 166 253
Speed Force Lightning
Barry can gather and weaponize electrical energy produced through his speed.
- Throws a lightning ball powerful enough to destroy an armored electronic warrior. 256
- Uses Speed Force-generated wind and magnetic effects to slow a falling cruise ship. 177
- Produces enough destructive force to break out of a reinforced metahuman containment cell. 255
Temporal Techniques
Barry’s connection to the Speed Force allows effects that directly affect time.
- Creates a time remnant to counteract Zoom’s Multiverse Cannon; the remnant sacrifices itself to neutralize the device’s energy. 165
- Creates Flashpoint by altering the past to save his mother, causing reality and memory instability. 166 172 173
- Is vulnerable to the consequences of altered fixed points and Speed Force paradoxes. 166 187 253
Forensic Investigation
Outside his superhero activities, Barry works as a forensic investigator for the Central City Police Department.
- Investigates dark-matter-affected bus passengers and other metahuman incidents. 256
- Analyzes evidence connected to DeVoe’s operations with Team Flash. 259
Relationships
- Lu Heng / Guardian — Initially treats Lu as an unknown but potentially dangerous outsider; later requests that Lu defend Earth if Zoom defeats him. Their methods frequently clash, but Barry comes to trust Lu completely after Henry Allen is restored. 156 159 160 174 253
- Caitlin Snow — S.T.A.R. Labs teammate who supports Barry through crises, including his return from Flashpoint and later Speed Force imprisonment. 173 255
- Cisco Ramon — Close teammate and technical support. Cisco develops the Quark Stabilizing Sphere to rescue Barry from the Speed Force. 254 255
- Wally West / Kid Flash — Fellow speedster. Wally’s death in Flashpoint becomes a major factor in forcing Barry to confront the damage caused by altering time. 172
- Henry Allen — Barry’s father. Zoom killed Henry, but Lu Heng later restores him to life before Barry enters the Speed Force. 166 253
- Zoom — Speedster enemy who attempts to use the Multiverse Cannon to destroy parallel universes. Barry defeats him after a race and the sacrifice of a time remnant. 157 165
- Reverse-Flash / Eobard Thawne — Imprisoned adversary who taunts Barry over Flashpoint’s consequences and his collapsing memories. 172 173
- Alice — Barry’s partner and “lightning rod.” Her abduction by Samuroid helps restore Barry’s clarity after his return from the Speed Force. 253 255
- Clifford DeVoe / The Thinker — Frames Barry for murder and seeks to eliminate him. Barry refuses to flee prison illegally and is eventually acquitted through Team Flash’s plan. 257
Story Role / Major Arcs
Arrival of Guardian and Zoom’s Multiverse Cannon
When Lu Heng arrives in Barry’s world, Barry immediately races to protect him from Zoom, believing the unknown “Superman” is in danger. 156 157 Barry later accepts Lu’s offer to help capture Zoom in exchange for Speed Force energy, while remaining wary of Lu’s motives. 157 158
Barry races Zoom to stop the Multiverse Cannon. He creates a time remnant that runs in the opposite direction around the cannon, sacrificing itself to neutralize its destructive energy. 165
Flashpoint
Following Zoom’s defeat and the loss of his father, Barry changes the past to save his mother and creates Flashpoint. 166 He resists returning to the original timeline until Wally is murdered by the Rival and his own memories begin disappearing. 172 173
Barry ultimately returns to the proper timeline with Lu’s help, though Flashpoint leaves behind altered lives and anomalous speedsters. 173 174
Savitar and the Speed Force Prison
Barry fights Savitar alongside Jesse Quick, Wally West, and Jay Garrick, with Kara serving as aerial support. 251 Savitar’s defeat destabilizes the Speed Force, forcing Barry to enter it as a replacement keeper to prevent Central City and the timeline from collapsing. 253
Lu resurrects Henry Allen so that Barry can leave his loved ones in his father’s care before entering the Speed Force. 253 Months later, Cisco’s Quark Stabilizing Sphere helps bring Barry back, though he initially returns unstable and overwhelmed by future knowledge. 254 255
The Thinker
After recovering to save Alice from Samuroid, Barry investigates the dark-matter metahumans connected to Clifford DeVoe’s plan. 255 256 DeVoe frames him for murder, but Barry refuses to use his powers to escape prison and is acquitted when Ralph Dibny impersonates DeVoe in court. 257
Barry accompanies Lu into DeVoe’s pocket dimension, where Lu defeats DeVoe and restores the victims whose powers he stole. 259
Antimatter Crisis
When Monitor Mar Novu demands Barry sacrifice himself to address a multiversal antimatter threat, Barry is confused and reluctant. Lu intervenes, overpowers Novu, and seals him in the Primordial Void. 260
