Background / History
Disrupted Plans
Orochimaru originally intended to establish Otogakure in the Land of Fields and recruit young people with unusual abilities. A Root raid against his secret base near Kusagakure disrupted those plans: prospective recruits, including Kin Tsuchi, were captured or killed, while other survivors were placed under Konoha’s surveillance. He blamed his former colleague Shimura Danzō but refused to abandon his ambitions 33.
Konoha Crush Plan
Orochimaru ambushed Fourth Kazekage Rasa during his return from negotiations with the daimyo. With Kabuto and Kimimaro eliminating the escort, Orochimaru poisoned and killed Rasa, then used his removed facial skin to impersonate him. He regarded acquiring the Kazekage’s identity as the first step of the Konoha Crush Plan 50.
Without Otogakure available, he seized Kusagakure by killing an elder in front of the village’s remaining leaders. Their surrender gave him access to its ninja and resources, including an abandoned underground cavern that became his experimental base. There, he prepared mutated test subjects and reincarnated Hashirama Senju, Tobirama Senju, and Rasa 53.
Posing as Rasa, Orochimaru persuaded Sunagakure’s leadership to attack Konoha during the joint Chunin Exams. He portrayed Konoha as weakened and promised relief from Sunagakure’s harsh living conditions, then ordered covert mobilization and infiltration of the Land of Fire 54.
During the Forest of Death exam, he transformed three Kusagakure Genin into monsters and released them against other examinees. He also killed the two ninja accompanying his disguise after they recognized that he was not their original teammate 59.
The invasion ended with Orochimaru losing the use of his hands to Hiruzen’s Reaper Death Seal. Jiraiya broke the battlefield barrier after entering Sage Mode, while the reincarnated Rasa exposed the impersonation to Sunagakure’s forces before freeing his soul. Kabuto evacuated Orochimaru, preventing Danzō from intercepting him 71 72.
Sasuke’s Training and Orochimaru’s Death
Orochimaru trained Sasuke while regarding his Uchiha body as an ideal vessel. Their arrangement was openly transactional: Sasuke sought the power to kill Itachi, while Orochimaru expected to take his body. Orochimaru also sent him to collect research material, including Mōryō’s cells, and later to retrieve Shinnō 118 155 197.
His subordinates’ kidnapping of civilians brought Ning Xue into conflict with him. After learning that a masked Ice Release user had defeated one of his squads, Orochimaru ordered his followers to report further encounters rather than fight the stranger. Ning Xue instead infiltrated the underground complex near Camel Mountain, discovering more than a hundred imprisoned civilians 210 214 215.
Their battle revealed Ning Xue’s Byakugan alongside his Ice Release, making him increasingly attractive to Orochimaru as a research subject and possible vessel. Orochimaru used repeated body shedding, giant snake summons, Manda, and Triple Rashomon against him before Sasuke intervened 218 221 224 225 226.
Orochimaru assumed the White Phosphorus Great Snake form, paralyzed Sasuke with its bodily fluid, and entered his body. The takeover failed when Sasuke drew Ning Xue into the mental realm. Together, they consumed Orochimaru’s mental power and destroyed his will; Sasuke retained power within an altered Cursed Seal without Orochimaru’s remaining presence 226 227 228.
Both Akatsuki and Konoha subsequently confirmed his death, crediting Sasuke and the Ice Release ninja 237.
Reincarnation and Return to Life
Kabuto’s first attempt to summon Orochimaru through conventional Impure World Reincarnation failed. He attributed this to Orochimaru dividing portions of his soul through body possession and Cursed Seals. With help from an ally possessing a soul-related ability, Kabuto collected fragments and reincarnated Orochimaru by a special method 384.
Kabuto initially displayed him as an emotionless shell, then activated and restrained him with control talismans. Orochimaru retained enough awareness to criticize Kabuto’s attempts to imitate and surpass him, but was subsequently forced into combat as his puppet 384 385 386.
During the cavern’s collapse, Orochimaru drove a shard of Ning Xue’s white ice into the back of his own head. Its placement and properties interfered with the talisman’s hold over his soul, restoring partial freedom. He reached the unconscious Anko and transferred chakra through her Cursed Seal; his reincarnated body disintegrated as a snake formed from the seal and produced a new living body 389.
Ning Xue immediately attacked the restored Orochimaru. Orochimaru tried to avoid fighting and offered to make amends for his wrongdoing, but Ning Xue rejected the offer and pursued him with an Ice Giant’s sustained barrage 390.
Appearance
- Complexion and hair: Unnaturally pale skin and long, smooth black hair worn over his shoulders 33.
- Eyes: Golden irises with vertical, snake-like pupils; purple eyeshadow is visible during his attack on Rasa 50.
- Clothing: Appears in a white kimono tied with a purple waist rope, and later in a black-and-yellow robe 33 50.
- Serpentine traits: A long tongue, an unnaturally extensible neck and jaw, and the ability to replace his lower body with a snake’s tail 50 218 220 224.
- White Phosphorus Great Snake: A huge white-scaled body formed from intertwined small snakes, with a partly human-shaped head and snakes growing across its surface 226.
Personality
Orochimaru treats people as experimental material, prospective vessels, or expendable tools. He calls his transformed Genin “creations” and takes pleasure in sending them to spread terror. His interest in unusual abilities can outweigh practical concerns: discovering Ning Xue’s Ice Release and Byakugan intensifies his desire to capture him even during a dangerous battle 59 214 224 225.
He combines intimidation with persuasive manipulation. In Kusagakure, he presents submission as protection while murdering an elder to enforce it; in Sunagakure, he uses Rasa’s authority and promises of a better future to secure support for invasion. His followers remain devoted enough to seek revenge after his death 53 54 231.
His pursuit of immortality produces considerable confidence in his own survival. That confidence breaks when Sasuke and Ning Xue begin consuming his will. Nevertheless, he later exploits Kabuto’s control mechanism and Anko’s Cursed Seal to return to life 227 228 389.
He is also perceptive about others’ motives and weaknesses. He identifies Kabuto’s dependence on imitation and borrowed identity despite being physically restrained. Kabuto separately remembers his practice of treating failure as information rather than a reason to stop improving 312 385.
Abilities & Skills
Snake Techniques
- Hidden Shadow Snake Hands: Releases snakes from his sleeves to poison, restrain, or pull opponents into attack range. He also uses them to destroy Ning Xue’s flying ice platform and deflect incoming projectiles 50 222 224 390.
- Myriad Serpent Array: Produces a vast horde of snakes from his mouth, each capable of extending a blade. Ning Xue counters the swarm with Water Release and freezing 219.
- Serpentine movement: Extends his neck around a weapon’s guard, bends at inhuman angles, and moves rapidly using a snake-shaped lower body 220 222 224.
- Intruder detection: Detects a faint unfamiliar presence in his laboratory through what the narration describes as a snake’s instinct 215.
Body Shedding and Regeneration
- Orochimaru-style substitution: Emerges from his own mouth or from a snake, leaving an injured or restrained shell behind. It allows him to escape impalement, freezing, bisection, and binding techniques 218 221 224 225.
- Reincarnated-body enhancement: While under Impure World Reincarnation, he can produce a complete replacement body from a surviving mouth-bearing fragment, bypassing the technique’s slower reconstruction 386.
- Demonstrated limits: Physical regeneration does not prevent Sasuke and Ning Xue from destroying his will during the attempted takeover 228.
Possession and Cursed Seals
- Body takeover: Enters a target as a small white snake and attempts to overwhelm their soul within a mental realm containing earlier victims 227.
- Anesthetic bodily fluid: The White Phosphorus Great Snake’s fluid becomes a powerful nerve anesthetic on contact with air. It immobilizes Sasuke and prevents him from sustaining his Cursed Seal transformation 227.
- Cursed Seal research: Uses Jugo’s cells and a simplified Cursed Seal to create mutated subjects intended for deployment in Konoha 53.
- Soul fragmentation: According to Kabuto, possession and Cursed Seal implantation expend portions of Orochimaru’s soul, complicating conventional reincarnation 384.
- Restoration through a seal: Transfers chakra into Anko’s Cursed Seal to replace his reincarnated body with a living one 389.
Summoning and Impure World Reincarnation
- Giant snakes: Summons pythons exceeding twenty meters, later escalating to five forty-meter pythons and the nearly hundred-meter-long Manda 221.
- Coordinated attacks: Uses summons alongside close-range strikes to overwhelm Ning Xue’s defenses and break his Ice Armor 222.
- Triple Rashomon: Raises three enormous defensive gates against Arrow of the Extreme North, positioning giant snakes as additional shields 225.
- Impure World Reincarnation: Reanimates Hashirama, Tobirama, and Rasa using three living sacrifices. These summons possess only part of their original power, and Rasa eventually breaks free 53 72.
Infiltration and Swordsmanship
- Vanishing Facial Copy Technique: Applies Rasa’s removed facial skin to his own face, enabling him to impersonate the Kazekage and direct Sunagakure’s preparations 50 54.
- Underground Submarine Voyage: Moves beneath Ning Xue while the snake horde distracts him, then attacks from below; the Byakugan exposes the ambush 219.
- Close-range combat: Combines elusive sword thrusts, body flexibility, kicks, and sleeve snakes during extended exchanges with Ning Xue 220 222.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
