Background / History

As a child, Sasuke sought to grow strong enough to earn his father’s recognition and catch up to his brother, Itachi. During a practical combat class, he defeated Hyuga Ningxue, though he sensed Ningxue had deliberately held back. Sasuke ultimately set the concern aside to focus on becoming stronger. 20

The destruction of the Uchiha clan left Sasuke as its sole survivor. The loss intensified his coldness, isolation, and hatred; he harshly rejected Naruto’s attempt at friendship and sympathy. 33

During the Chunin Exams, Orochimaru identified Sasuke as a target. Sasuke confronted his fear of snakes, used his Sharingan to read a giant python’s movements, and destroyed it with the Great Fireball Jutsu before learning it was Orochimaru’s puppet. Orochimaru then bit him and transferred power into him through the Cursed Seal. 62

The Cursed Seal later activated in battle, granting Sasuke enough power and speed to defeat a monster, but leaving him unconscious afterward. 65

Ning Xue later challenged Sasuke’s long-held belief that Itachi alone destroyed the Uchiha clan. The possibility of outside assistance, Konoha’s involvement, and Itachi’s intention to spare him caused Sasuke to question the hatred that had driven him for years. 245
