Background and History
Dr. Gero created Cell from the cells of Earthlings, Saiyans, Namekians, and the Frost Demon race. Gero stored power and information that Cell's embryo could not withstand in Androids 17 and 18, making their absorption the route to his perfect form 48.
In a devastated future timeline, Cell hunted the two androids while absorbing humans to grow stronger. His plan faltered when 17 and 18 trained until each exceeded his base-form strength; their infinite energy also made a prolonged fight dangerous for him 40 43. After King Vegeta defeated them, Cell seized the opportunity to absorb both. His triumph lasted only moments before King Vegeta overwhelmed him 44.
Vegeta brought the nearly defeated Cell to Gamos as a research subject. Cell later acknowledged Gamos as his boss and captured Turles, Raditz, and Nappa for him 45 48. Gamos then forced 17 and 18 out of Cell, arguing that keeping them inside restricted Cell's growth. Cell rebuilt his perfect form through training rather than reabsorbing them 48 49 54.
Cell went on to defend Gamos's allies when Gamos lost control, overpowering an energy sphere that six other fighters could not stop 91. He later fought Dark Ones, confronted Cell Max, and worked with Tien Shinhan to seal enemies using the Evil Containment Wave 109.
Appearance
Cell's form changes substantially as he evolves:
- Base and larval forms: A green, insect-like body with a long tail 43 49.
- Perfect form: A smoother body, human-like feet, a handsome human face, and two green carapaces above his head 44.
- Golden Cell: Golden skin and flames during transformation 58.
- Purple-Gold Cell: A green body with black wings and a purple-gold aura 91 109.
Personality
Cell is proud of his status as the Ultimate Android and eager to prove himself against powerful opponents. He struck poses upon reaching his perfect and purple-gold forms, though his first boast ended in a swift defeat by King Vegeta 44 91. He could also be calculating: when he first accepted Gamos as his boss, he intended to betray him after becoming stronger 49.
Despite that early intention, Cell later acted as Gamos's subordinate and rescued him and his allies. Surpassing his former boss brought Cell particular satisfaction after their earlier confrontations 48 91.
