Ye Qinru raised Ye Lingling alone after Ye Lingling’s father abandoned them for another woman the day after Lingling’s birth. Believing he had betrayed both mother and daughter because Lingling was a girl and Qinru would struggle to bear another child, Ye Qinru killed him with a longsword and the jade hairpin he had once given her. She concealed the killing from Lingling, telling her only that her father had abandoned them. 28

The act left Ye Qinru burdened by resentment and guilt. Her originally healing-oriented Nine-Heart Begonia became tainted, and her soul power remained stalled at the Soul Emperor rank. This history also made her deeply distrustful of men and determined that Ye Lingling would not suffer the same betrayal. 16 28
