Before his selection, Yue Guan was one of Spirit Hall's foremost Elders and a longtime comrade of Ghost Douluo. Though wary of the Sky Curtain's unknown origin, he helped Bibi Dong assess the unfamiliar power system displayed by the Renegade Immortal World, recognizing that flying swords and fire techniques relied on energy distinct from soul power. 1 4 9

The Sky Curtain selected him as part of its third group of explorers. Teleported into what appeared to be an ordinary mortal city, Yue Guan concluded that he was safe from cultivators and quickly abandoned his earlier caution. He entered Wang Lin's woodcarving shop, disparaged its owner as a weak mortal, and ridiculed a wooden chrysanthemum for lacking a flower's “soul.” 13 15

Wang Lin punished Yue Guan by aging him to the brink of death with a flick of his finger, then restoring his youth and soul power just as effortlessly. Yue Guan was ordered to sweep the shop and accepted the task in terror. 16

While cleaning, he closely studied the chrysanthemum carving he had mocked. Its depiction of germination, blooming, withering, and return to soil gave him a profound realization about his own Martial Soul, allowing him to advance to Rank 96. 17 A later carving by Wang Lin further changed his understanding: Yue Guan realized that he had wrongly forced his flower-type Martial Soul toward hardness and killing power rather than embracing its natural delicacy and vitality. 30 32

Despite his cowardice in the woodcarving shop's hierarchy, he remains emotionally attached to Ghost. Ghost's refinement into a puppet and eventual loss to the Soul Refining Sect leave Yue Guan devastated. 28 29 32
