Background / History
Research in Konoha and Defection
During the Third Ninja World War, Orochimaru established a laboratory near Kirigakure to study Mist ninja secrets. This was one of many facilities scattered across different locations, some left unused for years 11.
Hyuga Lan voluntarily approached him to learn scientific research. Orochimaru welcomed the opportunity to study a cooperative Byakugan user, then taught Lan nearly everything he knew after discovering their compatible interests and the boy’s talent 1.
Following the Nine-Tails attack and the deaths of Minato and his wife, the Third Hokage and Anbu approached Orochimaru’s underground laboratory to investigate his human experiments. Having anticipated discovery since he began experimenting on fellow villagers, Orochimaru calmly prepared to leave Konoha. He gave Lan his hidden laboratories and encouraged him to escape the restrictions of the Caged Bird seal 1.
Joining Akatsuki
When Pain recruited him, Orochimaru initially attacked in an attempt to seize the Rinnegan. Pain’s retaliation convinced him that taking the eyes by force was beyond his immediate capabilities, so he joined Akatsuki instead. His actual objective remained obtaining the Rinnegan to uncover the Ninja World’s ultimate secrets 35.
Ordered to investigate The Fool, Orochimaru contacted Lan through a messenger snake and arranged a meeting in the Forest of Death. Anko interrupted the meeting with an attempt to kill him and herself, but Lan exposed the apparent Orochimaru as a shadow clone, preventing her sacrifice 33 34.
Orochimaru asked Lan to infiltrate Konoha’s Anbu and use its intelligence resources to identify The Fool—unaware that Lan himself held that identity. In exchange, he supplied genetic-modification and artificial-embryo cultivation data. He identified Pakura as a lead and warned Lan against directly confronting the target 35 36 38.
Battles with the Prison Organization
Pain dispatched Orochimaru and Sasori to support Kakuzu and test the Prison organization. Their opponent was a Kaguya Clan Head clone controlled by Lan. Orochimaru coveted its Shikotsumyaku as a potential vessel, but the three Akatsuki members ultimately defeated the disease-stricken clone and withdrew 61 63 64 67.
A later confrontation with Garuda, another of Lan’s clone avatars, ended far worse. Garuda cut through Orochimaru’s Yamata no Orochi form, inflicted wounds that resisted regeneration, and dismantled the transformation with bone spikes. Orochimaru escaped through a summoned python, then used Living Corpse Reincarnation to abandon his ruined body 89 93 94 102 103.
Seeking treatment for Sasori and Kakuzu and an antidote to Garuda’s attacks, Orochimaru approached Tsunade. Her refusal led to battle. When Garuda intervened, Orochimaru mistook his missing arm and weakened condition for an opportunity, only to be immobilized by Byakugan genjutsu and attacked by his own snakes. Kakuzu freed him, but their renewed three-man assault also failed 109 113 115 116 117 118.
Garuda Cell Experiments
Learning of Garuda’s seven-attribute chakra fusion intensified Orochimaru’s interest: he believed it could reveal powers beyond those attributed to the Sage of Six Paths. He later renewed his collaboration with Danzo to study Garuda Cells obtained through Tsunade 129 159.
Cell analysis led Orochimaru to infer that Garuda possessed both Hyuga and Kaguya ancestry. This was his interpretation of the fused bloodlines, not a discovery that Garuda was Lan’s avatar. Attempts to balance Garuda Cells with Hashirama Cells failed because Garuda’s destructive power consumed the opposing cells’ vitality and killed the subjects 159 161.
Orochimaru next pursued resistance reagents and compatibility-based transplantation. He proposed using Kinoe/Tenzō or his tissue samples, then conducted unsuccessful experiments on children supplied by Danzo. After a month without progress, he requested Neji Hyuga as a more promising subject and suggested that any resulting evolved Byakugan could be taken for their own use 162 163.
Appearance
- Build: Described as tall and thin 34 109.
- Akatsuki clothing: Wears the organization’s blood-red cloud-patterned robe 109 112.
- Snake-like mannerism: Flicks his tongue when excited by Lan’s scientific interests 36.
- Changing body: After Living Corpse Reincarnation, his appearance and physique differ enough that Sasori and Kakuzu identify him through his familiar chakra rather than his looks. He initially wears bandages while adapting 102.
Personality
Orochimaru remains composed when his experiments are discovered, setting aside his emotions before preparing for defection. He takes particular pride in recognizing talent and cultivating devoted subordinates. His praise of Lan is genuine, but retaining Lan as a useful asset inside Konoha also serves his interests 1 36.
His pursuit of knowledge overrides loyalty to institutions and concern for experimental subjects. Akatsuki membership is a means to obtain the Rinnegan, while his alliance with Danzo supplies resources for dangerous transplantation research. He remains unmoved by Danzo’s threats and privately regards Danzo as the one being exploited 35 162.
His arrogance has limits: Garuda’s attacks make him fear death and retreat immediately. Nevertheless, those defeats deepen rather than extinguish his fascination with Garuda’s body and eyes. He also retains some attachment to former comrades, warning Jiraiya about Garuda because he does not want his old friend killed through carelessness 94 113 117.
Abilities & Skills
Genetic Engineering and Scientific Analysis
- Possesses extensive expertise in genetic modification and artificial-embryo cultivation. His technical documents become essential to Lan’s efforts to save and clone the Kaguya Clan Head 38.
- Previously conducted Hashirama Cell experiments on children; the surviving subject later known as Kinoe/Tenzō was taken into Root by Danzo 162.
- Identifies Garuda’s attacks as a destructive power that continuously consumes vitality until the victim’s body disintegrates. He suspects the altered Shikotsumyaku has exceeded an ordinary Kekkei Genkai 104.
- Uses Kimimaro’s blood to partially alleviate Kakuzu’s wounds, while recognizing that the treatment is insufficient because of the disparity between Kimimaro’s and Garuda’s powers 103 104.
- Studied Artificial Tailed Beast records and caused the death of Kumogakure’s previous Eight-Tails jinchūriki to obtain a severed horn. His progress in Tailed Beast research remained limited 56.
Snake Techniques
- Hidden Shadow Snake Hands: Releases venomous snakes from his arm to strike opponents. In his later attack on Garuda, he uses specially cultivated snakes whose fangs can make even a scratch fatal 63 117.
- Underground ambushes: Sends snakes beneath the ground to bind an opponent’s ankles and bite their legs 63.
- Formation of Ten Thousand Snakes: Expels a mass of venomous snakes carrying swords in their mouths. Their blades destroy a substantial portion of the first Kaguya clone’s bone forest 64 65.
- Python restraint: Uses a giant python to hold Lan’s Kaguya clone, though the clone breaks free 67.
Eight Branches Technique
- Transforms into Yamata no Orochi, a white serpent monster with eight heads and a height of dozens of meters 93.
- Gains enormous strength, Tailed Beast-comparable chakra, and rapid regeneration; can attack with several heads or swallow an opponent whole 93 94.
- Can emerge from a serpent mouth while the transformation remains active 94.
- Limit: Regenerating Garuda’s wounds consumes unexpectedly large amounts of chakra. Garuda’s bone attacks ultimately dismantle the form 94.
Body Modification and Recovery
- Soft-body modification: Restores arms bent by Tsunade’s blows by snapping them back into shape, greatly reducing the effectiveness of blunt-force injury 114.
- Orochimaru-Style Substitution: Emerges uninjured from the mouth of his damaged body, resembling a snake shedding its skin. Its enormous chakra cost prevents repeated use during a single battle 117.
- Living Corpse Reincarnation: Transfers into another vessel. He uses it when Garuda’s lingering wounds defeat his other life-preservation techniques, but requires time to adapt to the replacement body 102 103.
- Limit: His recovery techniques do not make him universally immortal; Garuda’s vitality-eroding power forces him to abandon his former body 94 103.
Summoning and Defensive Ninjutsu
- Triple Rashomon: Summons a defensive barrier in response to a massive tornado aimed at him 114.
- Summoning-based escape: Calls a yellow python that swallows him and disappears, escaping Garuda through a method resembling Reverse Summoning 94.
- Shadow Clone: Uses a clone during the Forest of Death encounter, nearly causing Anko to sacrifice herself against a substitute rather than his actual body 34.
Intelligence and Subordinate Management
- Maintains hidden sentries in Konoha and learns quickly of Lan’s return; a venomous snake delivers his summons 33.
- Recognizes Lan’s increased confidence and improved Byakugan perception after a brief meeting 36.
- Uses promises of technical knowledge, freedom from the Caged Bird seal, and possible eternal life to encourage Lan’s cooperation 34 36.
- Blind spot: Fails to identify Lan as The Fool when asking him to investigate that very identity 35.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Kusanagi Sword / Sword of Sky — A prized sword retrieved from his throat. It cuts through the first Kaguya clone’s bone forest, although Orochimaru later acknowledges that Garuda’s advanced bones surpass it in hardness and sharpness 63 65 113.
- Hidden laboratories — Numerous research facilities across different locations. He transfers several to Lan before defecting, including an abandoned wartime laboratory near Kirigakure 1 11.
- Genetic-research documents — Records of genetic modification and artificial-embryo technology supplied to Lan through their intelligence bargain 36 38.
- Preserved former body — Keeps his discarded, Garuda-damaged body in a glass container for examination. Despite preservation measures, it continues deteriorating toward dust 103.
- Garuda Cells and Hashirama Cells — Experimental materials used in his unsuccessful effort to give a subject both Shikotsumyaku and Wood Release 159 161.
Relationships
- Hyuga Lan — Scientific pupil and former subordinate whom Orochimaru considers exceptionally talented. Their association becomes an exchange between apparent equals, while Lan secretly remains the target Orochimaru seeks as The Fool and later fights through Garuda 1 30 35 36 116.
- Anko Mitarashi — Former direct disciple. She seeks revenge for his abandonment and attempts a suicidal attack; Orochimaru subdues her and leaves her for Lan to handle 30 34 36.
- Hiruzen / Third Hokage — His teacher and the authority who moves against his human experimentation. Orochimaru later states that Hiruzen was the only person in Konoha he feared 1 162.
- Pain — Akatsuki leader and intended source of the coveted Rinnegan. Orochimaru joins after failing to seize the eyes and carries out Pain’s investigation and combat assignments 35 61.
- Sasori — Akatsuki comrade and frequent combat partner against the Prison organization. They cooperate in seeking countermeasures to Garuda 61 103 117.
- Kakuzu — Akatsuki comrade whom he treats with Kimimaro’s blood. Kakuzu reciprocates by breaking Garuda’s genjutsu and helping him retreat 103 104 116.
- Kimimaro — Trusted subordinate who guides Sasori and Kakuzu to his hideout. Orochimaru uses his blood for treatment but warns Kakuzu away from exploiting him further 102 104.
- Tsunade — Fellow Sannin and medical expert whose assistance he seeks against Garuda. Later, he recognizes that her control of Garuda’s blood gives her leverage over other researchers 109 113 162.
- Jiraiya — Former companion who repeatedly pursues him to bring him back to Konoha. Orochimaru finds the pursuit troublesome but still warns him against underestimating Garuda 109 113.
- Danzo — Recurring research collaborator who supplies cells and child test subjects. Their alliance is transactional: Danzo demands results, while Orochimaru uses his resources and pushes him toward targeting the Hyuga 159 162 163.
- Neji Hyuga — Proposed transplantation subject. Orochimaru argues that his youth and Hyuga bloodline improve compatibility while making him easier to control 162 163.
