Background / History

Dan Kato is a Konoha jonin who dreams of becoming Hokage. Following orders from the Third Hokage, he becomes Hyuga Nichigetsu's instructor, guiding the five-year-old genin through missions before intending to bring him to the front lines for Tsunade's tutelage. He recognizes Nichigetsu's unusual ability but still tests him through a bell exercise, where Nichigetsu defeats him through layered Shadow Clone, Stealth, and Gentle Fist tactics. 15

He and Nichigetsu undertake numerous missions together, including C-rank assignments. Dan shares his combat experience, stealth methods, and chakra-control techniques with his student, while Nichigetsu's unconventional fighting style also benefits Dan. 16

During the medical-supply convoy's march to the Land of Wind, Dan commands the security detail. He assigns reconnaissance, perimeter defense, reserve, and covert-watch duties among the team, then secretly infiltrates the Hidden Sand force during their ambush. 21 22

Dan later joins Tsunade's operation against a Hidden Sand supply station. He uses his Spirit Transformation Technique to possess an enemy and place Explosive Tags, successfully destroying the depot, but the mission develops into a trap. During the ensuing battle, he forces himself to use the technique again to kill Dosa and stop Magnet Release: Gold Dust Hell, sustaining fatal-level injuries in the process. 29 31

Hyuga Nichigetsu and Tsunade perform emergency surgery with five Shadow Clones, restarting Dan's heart within an eighteen-minute window. Dan survives but remains comatose for four months due to neurological damage before finally regaining consciousness. 32 44

Personality

Dan is patient and supportive as an instructor. Rather than dismissing Nichigetsu for his age, he acknowledges his intelligence, accepts being outmaneuvered during the bell test, and passes on his own field experience. 15 16
