Background / History

Nagato is a war orphan from the Land of Rivers who travels with Yahiko and Konan. His parents were killed by Konoha ninja, leaving him deeply fearful of Konoha forehead protectors and the memories associated with them. 7

He meets Yuehua Ai when Konan brings Ai to their shelter. Initially shy and insecure, Nagato assumes Ai is frightened by his unusual eyes and tries to hide them behind his bangs. Ai instead calls them beautiful, giving Nagato his first reassurance about the Rinnegan. 2 3

Nagato raises a dog named Little One, whom he considers family. Little One is killed during the nearby battle between Hanzo and the Konoha Sannin; Nagato is devastated but is forced to flee the battlefield with his companions. 6

Though he fears Konoha ninja because of his parents' deaths, Nagato supports Yahiko's decision to seek out the Sannin and learn ninjutsu. After the group survives their confrontation with the rogue ninja Xiangyuan, Ai explains the Rinnegan's legendary status to him.
