History
Fars rose after the fall of the Sherlock Dynasty, inheriting much of its culture, institutions, currency system, and linguistic heritage. Farsian and Ancient Sherlockian belong to the same language family and share more than ninety percent of their vocabulary. 479
The empire was originally founded under the Axel Dynasty. Saroses Robin, one of Fars' founding dukes, aided the commoner King Axel's ascent and became remembered for his loyalty and military glory. 89
During the war with Byron, Fars faced a broad coalition including Byron, the Black Phoenix Dynasty, the southern Orc tribes, and the Nansera Territory. 132 146 Its position deteriorated further after the Orc assault on Strasbourg, the defection of South Seraph, and losses across several fronts. 239 311
The old Axel order fractured when Prince Redmir and Duke Mosred declared independent successor states, while Counts Brittany and Galanod recognized Count Brittany's legitimacy. 398 McLean Brittany was subsequently crowned Emperor, ending the Axel Dynasty and establishing the Brittany Dynasty while preserving the Empire of Fars. 429
Following the defeat of the Black Phoenix Dynasty, Fars received nine of its twelve core directly controlled counties through the Four-Nation Alliance settlement. 451 The empire later emerged from the wider war severely weakened: it had lost major forces in Ferlanden, suffered repeated rebellions, and lost the Mesu Family's Northern Fleet to Byron. 587
Government and Administration
| Institution / Office | Role |
|---|---|
| Emperor of Fars | Supreme ruler of the empire; the throne passed from the Axel Dynasty to McLean Brittany's Brittany Dynasty. 429 |
| Central Government Office | Imperial civil-service institution employing graduates of Fars' universities and administering ranked officials. 2 3 |
| Minister of Foreign Affairs | Traditionally held by the Count D'Artagnan line. 193 |
| Minister of War | A major office held by Count Galanod during the imperial succession crisis. 398 |
| City Patrol | Urban law-enforcement force whose units can be reorganized into military formations, such as the Free Knight Regiment. 83 100 |
| Noble private forces | Legally recognized military forces owned by noble families; the Mesu Family's Northern Fleet was one such private force. 371 |
Imperial officials are organized by numerical rank. Charlotte Mecklenburg began as a First-Class Clerk ranked forty-first, while later administrators could hold ranks such as Twenty-fifth Rank, Level 5 Administrator Chief. 2 320
Society and Culture
Language
Farsian is the empire's principal language and is closely related to Ancient Sherlockian. Charlotte's ability to understand Sherlockian largely stems from this linguistic similarity. 479
After acquiring former Black Phoenix territory, Charlotte planned to promote Farsian as the primary language through university education and free literacy classes. 451
Currency
Fars uses the Ecu, Foer, and Centime. These units were inherited from the Sherlock Dynasty, though Fars mints its own coinage rather than using Sherlockian currency. 119 479
- An Ecu is a high-value unit; one Ecu was described as equivalent to roughly 1,800–1,900 RMB. 2
- Currency circulation is concentrated in cities and among wealthier people, while many rural communities rely heavily on barter. 119
- Monday is known informally as “Empire Payday” because government departments distribute salaries then. 146
Education
Fars has four universities, whose graduates hold exceptional social status because the universities are regarded as serving the gods. 3
| Institution | Known role / affiliation |
|---|---|
| National Academy | Trains civil servants and knights; students can learn breathing methods and pursue Battle Qi. 3 35 |
| Sheffield University | Associated with Lady Black Moon; teaches paths including Bloody Glory, Dark Breathing Technique, and Dark Moon Meditation Art. 3 66 |
| Gorgia University | Favored by the God of Elves; associated with Astrology, Card Magic, Dream Walkers, and Cat Elf Magic. 66 117 |
The National Academy and universities provide access to orthodox cultivation methods that are difficult for ordinary people to obtain outside formal institutions. 35 96
Social Inequality
Orcs face entrenched discrimination in Fars. Charlotte notes that he has never seen or heard of an Orc civil servant in the Central Government Office. 117
Slavery also exists within the empire. Charlotte uses his authority as a City Patrol Commander to free Madam Umeboshi Sauce from a slave merchant and later plans a joint operation against the slave market. 95
Armed Forces
Fars' military structure includes the Royal Knight Regiment, noble private knight regiments, and local forces. 371
- Knight Orders — Major military units led by nobles or officers; the West Wind Knight Regiment and Free Knight Regiment are among those operating under Fars. 100 264
- Fars Royal Navy — Operates conventional and Magic Alchemical Warships, though it was heavily affected by wartime losses and the Mesu Family's defection. 299 371
- Magic Alchemical Warships — Warships controlled through a Magic Ban Code and identity verification system. Their operation is taught as practical knowledge in Fars' universities. 299
- Saint Ranks — The empire's most important high-level Transcendent assets; their deployment can determine the outcome of campaigns. 358
Fars lost all of its legendary warships when Duchess Mesu defected to Byron and seized the Fontainebleau, the former flagship of Emperor Julius Axel. 371
Foreign Relations
| Power | Relationship with Fars |
|---|---|
| Byron Empire | Principal wartime enemy; Fars declared war on Byron, and Byron later supported hostile coalitions and Mesu's defection. 100 371 |
| Empire of Inglima | Allied with Fars during the war; Inglima supplied naval forces and later participated in the Four-Nation Alliance settlement. 323 451 |
| Black Phoenix Dynasty | Long-standing enemy that joined Byron against Fars; its defeat allowed Fars to gain nine core counties. 132 451 |
| Lionheart Dynasty | Participated in the postwar Four-Nation Alliance and formally recognized Anne Brittany's Modovan regime alongside Byron. 388 451 |
| Southern Orc tribes | Hostile coalition members who invaded Fars and besieged Strasbourg; later conflicts centered on expelling Orc forces from the Red Dragon Strait. 132 239 346 |
| Duchy of Behemoth | Initially part of Fars' sphere, then incorporated into the empire after the war. 264 |
| Nansera Territory | Opposed Fars through the New Order Treaty International Alliance before being incorporated into the empire. 146 264 |
Major Conflicts
War with Byron and the New Order Treaty International Alliance
Fars declared war on Byron, prompting the reorganization of local City Patrol forces into the Free Knight Regiment. 100 Byron, the Black Phoenix Dynasty, southern Orc tribes, and the Nansera Territory later formed the New Order Treaty International Alliance against Fars. 146
The conflict spread across Ferlanden, South Seraph, the sea, and the Red Dragon Strait. Fars also sought outside support, receiving Inglima's naval assistance for a planned decisive naval campaign against Byron. 323
Orc Assault on Strasbourg
Orc forces surrounded Strasbourg with plans to bury the city beneath dust and sand using Saint Rank Shaman Mages. 239 The invasion was ultimately repelled at enormous cost to the Orcs, but surviving forces established a bridgehead near the Red Dragon Strait and occupied Farsian cities. 311 346
Internal Rebellions and Dynastic Change
Fars suffered multiple internal crises as Redmir Axel and Mosred declared rival states and noble territories broke away from imperial authority. 398 The Brittany Family's accession stabilized the central government, though remnants of the Axel Dynasty continued to resist afterward. 429 658
Black Phoenix Settlement
After the Black Phoenix Dynasty's defeat, Fars secured the largest share of its core territory through negotiations with Inglima, the Lionheart Dynasty, and other participating powers. 451
