Background

Following the Second Shinobi World War, Jiraiya remained in Amegakure for three years rather than returning immediately to Konoha. There, he lived with and taught three war orphans—Nagato, Konan, and Yahiko—who would later become central figures in Akatsuki. 2

After the war, Jiraiya encountered the displaced child Yueshu amid the ruins of the battlefield. Recognizing Yueshu's Konoha forehead protector, he offered to bring him back to Konoha and persuaded Tsunade to take the child with the withdrawing Konoha forces. 2

By the time Yueshu sought early graduation, Jiraiya was already Minato Namikaze's instructor. He personally requested permission to lead Minato, Yueshu, Kushina, and Mikoto together, establishing Konoha's first four-person squad. 14 23

Jiraiya balances genuine warmth and concern with a deliberately unserious, meddlesome demeanor. He helps Yueshu without demanding anything in return, takes responsibility for his students, and treats them as though they were his own children. 2 38 74

Jiraiya conducts the early-graduation bell test for Yueshu, Kushina, and Mikoto, testing their teamwork and ability to think under pressure. Though initially impressed by Yueshu's unusual talent, he is ultimately defeated by the students' coordinated strategy and accepts them into his squad with Minato. 23 24 25 26

Takigakure Mission

As squad leader, Jiraiya oversees the mission to protect Kuchiki Kei and the Chakra Fruit after it is upgraded from C-rank to A-rank. He battles Kurohane and two rogue Jonin alone after realizing they are stalling him to endanger his students. 31 32 34

Jiraiya later uses Sage Mode to confront Kurohane directly, protecting his wounded students and coordinating with Minato to injure their enemy. He is eventually defeated, but Yueshu's Wood Release allows the team to survive. 41 42 43

Otsutsuki Encounters

Jiraiya confronts an Otsutsuki while rescuing Minato and Mikoto, choosing to send his injured students away with Gamachu before remaining behind alone. With Fukasaku and Shima, he pushes Sage Mode to its limit and nearly dies after suffering petrification from excessive natural energy. 56 57
