Background

Kushina is an Uzumaki survivor who arrived in Konoha as a child. Her classmates mocked her red hair and round face after she declared her ambition to become the first female Hokage. Rather than retracting it, she angrily stood by her dream; Yueshu was the first classmate to defend her. 4

She was targeted by Kumogakure for her potential as a jinchūriki vessel. Though bound and abducted, she cut off strands of her red hair and scattered them as a trail for rescuers. Yueshu found and recovered her before Konoha's pursuing forces arrived. 6 7

Mito Uzumaki, whom Kushina regards as a grandmother, later informed her that she had been selected to become the next Nine-Tails jinchūriki. The responsibility leaves Kushina frightened, isolated, and unusually withdrawn. 49 51
