Background / History

Fugaku leads the Uchiha during a period of mounting conflict with Konoha. When the clan is relocated, he is squeezed between Konoha’s leadership and radicals within his own clan, who are beginning to push him toward rebellion. The strain leaves him physically and mentally exhausted. 2

Initially, Fugaku devotes far more attention to Itachi than Sasuke and is displeased by Sasuke’s poor table manners and indifference to clan affairs. Sasuke’s exceptional Fire Style: Great Fireball Technique—nearly matching Fugaku’s own output at only five years old—changes his view. Fugaku arranges regular meals for Sasuke’s extreme appetite and later personally trains him in genjutsu. 2 3 16

When Sasuke declares that he will stand with the Uchiha if a rift forms between the clan and village, Fugaku is deeply moved. Sasuke’s answer strengthens Fugaku’s belief that every Uchiha must be prepared to uphold the clan. 6

Personality

Fugaku is stern, restrained, and heavily burdened by leadership. He speaks bluntly, maintains high standards for his sons, and spends his early mornings handling clan affairs, Military Police Force work, inter-clan relations, and pressure from Konoha’s higher-ups. 2 117

Despite his severe demeanor, Fugaku is protective of his family. He assigns Itachi to protect Sasuke after learning Orochimaru has targeted him, intervenes personally when Obito attacks his sons, and mobilizes the clan to search for Sasuke after his capture. 25 61 69

He develops into a pragmatic political operator. Fugaku can turn crises into leverage, cooperate with rivals when it benefits the clan, and employ public sympathy, military service, and alliances with other clans to improve the Uchiha’s position. 56 71 244

Fugaku increasingly treats Sasuke as an adviser rather than merely a child. He accepts Sasuke’s strategic input on clan policy, refugee integration, and the Eye of the Moon Plan after seeing the consistency of his judgment. 136 178

Abilities & Skills

Mangekyō Sharingan

Fugaku possesses the Mangekyō Sharingan and is one of the Uchiha Clan’s foremost combatants.

  • Intervenes against Obito’s Kamui-based assault on Itachi and Sasuke, forcing the attacker to withdraw temporarily. 61
  • Releases red lightning that Obito identifies as likely one of Fugaku’s Mangekyō abilities. 61
  • Projects enough pressure through his activated eyes to make Sasori feel threatened before the arrival of dozens of Three-Tomoe Sharingan users. 66
  • Uses his Mangekyō’s chakra and intimidating presence to halt a confrontation with Hyuga elders. 273
  • His specific ocular techniques are not identified in the available chapters.

Genjutsu Expertise

Fugaku is a capable genjutsu user and Sasuke’s primary instructor in the field.

  • Breaks Sasuke’s Forest of Thorns illusion with overwhelming ocular power. 16
  • Teaches Sasuke that genjutsu depends on mental energy and that controlling it is more difficult than controlling chakra. 16
  • Recognizes Sasuke’s unusually precise chakra control and rapid ability to learn ninjutsu. 16

Shinobi Techniques

  • Leads Uchiha forces in coordinated Fire Style attacks against Sasori. 67
  • Quickly grasps the basics of Shave, a Six Powers taijutsu technique given to him by Sasuke, and recognizes its value for ordinary children and Uchiha clan members alike. 177 178
  • Has extensive battlefield experience and understands the dangers of locations such as the Land of Warmth from prior missions. 258

Leadership and Political Strategy

  • Commands enough authority that even dissatisfied radical and conservative Uchiha factions obey his orders. 78 90
  • Uses the Root incident to secure increased Military Police Force benefits, control of an investigation team, and the prospect of returning the clan to its former grounds. 56
  • Successfully presents Uchiha casualties to the Third Hokage to obtain compensation and pensions for the clan. 71
  • Builds support among major Konoha clans for Tsunade as a prospective Hokage candidate. 244

Relationships

  • Mikoto Uchiha — His wife and the mother of Itachi and Sasuke. Mikoto is more openly attentive toward Sasuke while Fugaku’s focus is initially directed toward Itachi. 3
  • Uchiha Itachi — His eldest son. Fugaku relies on Itachi’s intelligence and skill, entrusts him with Sasuke’s protection, and later shares the secret plan against Danzō and Root with him. 25 232
  • Uchiha Sasuke — His younger son. Fugaku’s view of Sasuke changes from disappointment to pride, mentorship, trust, and open consultation on clan strategy. 3 16 136 178
  • Uchiha Shisui — A trusted Uchiha operative and Military Police Force deputy. Fugaku supports placing Shisui in a position of authority and later involves him in plans concerning Root. 34 232
  • Hiruzen Sarutobi — A political counterpart whose relationship with Fugaku shifts between mistrust and cooperation. Fugaku gains concessions through cooperation, while Hiruzen increasingly sees the Uchiha as useful to Konoha. 56 82
  • Shimura Danzō — A major threat to Fugaku and the Uchiha. Fugaku becomes alarmed after learning Danzō may possess implanted Sharingan and eventually plans to eliminate Danzō and Root. 137 232
  • Uchiha Obito — Deceives Fugaku by posing as Madara Uchiha and presenting the Eye of the Moon Plan. Fugaku rejects the plan after Sasuke exposes it as an illusory escape from reality. 135 136
  • Tsunade — Fugaku supports her as a Hokage candidate and later discusses possible Uchiha cooperation with her after Danzō’s defection. 244 261
  • Inuzuka Tsume — A former battlefield comrade who supports Fugaku’s political effort because of their life-and-death bond during the Third Shinobi World War. 244

Story Role / Major Arcs

Uchiha–Konoha Tensions

Fugaku initially manages the clan’s relocation and internal unrest while trying to prevent an open break with Konoha. After Sasuke’s declaration of loyalty to the Uchiha, he becomes more willing to assert the clan’s interests rather than simply endure pressure from the village. 2 6

When Root members attack within the Uchiha Compound, Fugaku presses Danzō for answers about their presence and the attack on Sasuke. 43

Cooperation with the Third Hokage

At a clan-head meeting following the Root incident, Fugaku proposes that the Uchiha join the pursuit of Orochimaru. His proposal helps redirect the crisis, earns support from other clan heads, and wins the Uchiha greater Military Police Force benefits and investigative authority. 56

Following subsequent Uchiha losses, Fugaku and his sons present the clan as victims before Hiruzen in order to secure compensation and pensions. 71

Defense of the Uchiha Clan

Fugaku reveals his Mangekyō Sharingan when Obito attacks Itachi and Sasuke. He rejects the idea that the masked attacker is truly Madara Uchiha, reasoning that the real Madara would not have fled from them. 61

During the conflict with Akatsuki, Fugaku rescues Sasuke from Sasori alongside Uchiha Nagasawa and a force of clan members. He later orders the clan to prioritize survival and return to Konoha rather than continue an unnecessary battle against Root and Akatsuki. 66 67

Daimyō Escort and Karin’s Adoption

Fugaku leads the Uchiha in protecting the Daimyō during an attack by disguised Anbu, helping improve the villagers’ perception of the clan as protectors. 121

After the mission, he supports Sasuke’s request to adopt Karin Uzumaki. Fugaku argues that Karin will be safer with the Uchiha than under Danzō’s influence, and Hiruzen ultimately approves the request. 123 124

Eye of the Moon Plan

Obito, posing as Madara, approaches Fugaku and persuades him to consider the Eye of the Moon Plan. Fugaku is initially tempted by its promise of a peaceful world and agrees to participate. 135

Sasuke exposes the plan’s reliance on the Infinite Tsukuyomi as a false dream that would abandon reality, family, and the Uchiha legacy. Fugaku immediately repudiates the plan, suspects that “Madara” is an impostor, and begins consulting Sasuke as an equal on how to confront the threat. 136

Refugee Integration and Anti-Root Plans

Fugaku personally returns to Konoha with ninety-seven children who join the Uchiha Clan, then rebukes radical faction members who oppose taking them in. He supports Sasuke’s proposal to train and integrate the children rather than treat them as burdens. 177 178

Later, Fugaku prepares a covert plan to eliminate Danzō and the Root Organization, regarding them as an existential obstacle to the Uchiha’s future. He shares the plan with Itachi and Shisui, though Itachi asks that action wait until his return in two years. 232

Clan Alliances and Konoha Security

Fugaku seeks support from Konoha’s clan leaders for Tsunade’s candidacy, gaining backing from the Nara, Yamanaka, Akimichi, Inuzuka, and Haruno families. 244

After Danzō’s activities bring infiltrators into Konoha, Fugaku leads the Uchiha in a five-day security purge with the Hyuga Clan, locating spies, rogue ninja, and hired assassins throughout the village. 289
